Remembering Neil Peart with a Multi-Cam Soundcheck

  • What's you favorite part clip in this video? Check out this gem: A multi-camera shoot of Neil Peart sound checking! It's been a year today since Neil's passing. Here's some of Hudson Music Founder Rob Wallis' tribute:
Hudson Music shared a long history with Neil, collaborating on two educational DVD/Video projects, Anatomy of a Drum Solo, and Taking Center Stage, as well as the career retrospective book, also titled Taking Center Stage. Prior to these project, Rob Wallis and Paul Siegel collaborated with Neil on the Warner Bros release, A Work in Progress.
Integrity. That is what I would say if asked to describe Neil in a word. Luckily, during our 30-year professional and personal relationship, I was able to see how that quality ran like a steel rod through every aspect of his too-short life.
Our relationship started, like many others, with writing a letter - yes, putting a communication in the mail. In the mid-80’s, my then-business partner Paul Siegel and I began taking turns writing to Neil several times a year, asking if he’d like to do an educational video. We would always get back a polite response telling us it was not the right time, but to “not give up hope.” During that time, we began a relationship with a senior Rush management person, Pegi Cecconi, whose initial role, we came to see, was probably to “feel us out.” We would occasionally meet Pegi for lunch or dinner when she was in NYC for Rush label business. And so it went for several years (probably many more than I remember).
While we were reaching out to Neil, Cathy Rich was also writing to him, asking if he’d perform at one of her Scholarship Concert/Tributes to her father, Buddy Rich. And after one of her many letters, he eventually said yes. He had decided that he wanted to try performing with a big band, playing the music of Buddy Rich. This took place on April 8th, 1991, at the Ritz in NYC (the old Studio 54, which became a concert hall). As word got out that Neil would be performing outside of Rush in a small venue, the excitement from the drumming community around the world was near fever pitch.

I am 57. My Dad did not appreciate the music of my youth. He was a drummer from the 50's. I learned drums from him. When I played Rush in my bedroom as a teen. He knocked on my door and asked who was that? I pointed to the poster on three long haired guys and said Rush. He said no, who is drumming?? My Dad came in and listened and smiled. Thank you for that Neil!!!!

I man I have never met in person. His speaking in interviews, his music/drumming abilities, his song lyrics, and book writing, has touched me more then I can begin to explain. At the same time, I am able to find joy and happiness. My heart breaks with sadness to such a loss. A man with so much impact. I find myself thinking......"What would Neil think? How would Neil feel? What might Neil do? How might Neil react? Would he play in this timing?"
Neil Peart: A man with a kind and gentle soul. A man whose drumming moved mountains.

Among the Band mates “Peart “was a humble individual and Private was just a average dude - each concert and countless Tours he did his part in the Performances . And just listening to him on candid interviews . He did speak very well for one to Understand .

You know... I have thought this MANY, MANY TIMES! And NOT JUST because of his Drumming Skills... but his WRITING Skills! His Philosophy of Life and the Universe! He Aspired to try to be "THE BEST HE COULD BE" at EVERYTHING... INCLUDING as a HUMAN BEING/PERSON!
I Met him/cliniced with him at PIT In Hollywood back in 1987, and he Was SO AWESOME! He hadn't been as tainted by the world and life at that point, but
I KNOW he had issues with "FAME"... but I HOPE things I got to say to him, got through and helped him deal with it all a bit better?
I told him, "I KNOW you have issues with Adulation and the whole "FAME/ROCK STAR" thing... but We here at PIT aren't JUST "FANS"... We are here
as STUDENTS to Learn from you! And Whether you think so or NOT You have ALOT to Teach us! And It isn't JUST your drumming/musician ship that
we come to learn from... it's YOU! A World Traveler, A Writer, Musician, Humanitarian... You INSPIRE US to be BETTER then we are! To PUSH Our Limits of WHO and WHAT we are! To make what we do, not JUST with music, but with LIFE "BETTER" then we are doing it! And NO You are NOT a "GOD"... Well not in the "Biblical/Mythological" sense anyway, {He really Laughed at that one!} even though I know SOME fans might think that of you and Ged and Alex, and You all aren't "SUPER-HUMANS" although Touring and putting out album after album of AWESOME MUSIC that you three do MIGHT slightly constitute that?! {Again he really Laughed at that!} You ARE "SUPER" to US! And Yes you are VERY "FAMOUS"... But You are ALSO Very Inspirational!
THAT is I think MORE attractive then just the "FAME/ROCK STAR" part! For ME it is anyway! Sure there are LOTS of "FAMOUS" People in MANY walks of life...
But I THINK that the Music of RUSH is MORE on the Inspirational Side of Like Carl Sagan, or A Great Teacher/Mentor we had in School! Again... that is what you three are to ME anyway!"
I know he really liked what I said! I also told him to not worry so much ABOUT the whole "FAME" thing... Just... go with it! Just ROLL with it!
And I still can help wonder if my words didn't come back to him when he was writing "Roll the Bones" because that IS a Major theme in ALL of the songs on that album! "CHANCE" "Why are We Here... Because we are HERE! DEAL WITH IT!"
      ROW the BOATS!!! LOL :D
      Joe

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!

It's crazy, I know, but Neil inspired me to not only become a drummer, but to experiment with rhythms and to really push myself, and it felt kind of personal when he died. When a friend told me he had died, I couldn't believe it.

He was such a talent! Rush as a whole was amazing and I grew up with their great work....but I have a question? No disrespect is intended, but why did Mr. Peart have a drum kit that encircled him if he never used it? In all the drumming solos and videos that I have watched he could done what he did with a kit half that size.

No the kit would revolve around and he would play electronic drums yes I've seen him use the whole circle of drums many of time.

His DW kit’s get a bad reputation those floor toms sound incredible and rich. And maybe the snare doesn’t sound as good as his old faithful slingerland it’s still pretty decent.

I know I’m a conspiracy minded guy, but I don’t think a lot of musicians pass away, I think they are ready to enjoy “retirement”... Not dead, just not in the spotlight anymore. Either way, a musician never dies. They live on for generation after generation, through the language of music.

The first 2 minutes are like pulling teeth. When you remove the Rush songs from around this drummer, the first 2 minutes are what's left. Awkward.
