Sitting here and stumbled on to this. Now that Neil has passed, I'm so moved by this video. I've been a professional drummer in a rock band (in the 80s) in the studio and know the process well. Its so emotional to see Neil being himself joking around and then watching the intensity and emotional response from him as he's playing this song. At this point in time, Neil is not a young man and yet, playing at this level even for a 25 year old would be a work out. It's good for a drummer's soul to see this dear man do what he was born to do.... To me, watching him behind the drums.... it's at that place he is home....
Amen brother. He inspired me to become a drummer when i first heard 'Anthem'. They didn't call him "The Professor" for nothin. Wish he was still with us
What moves me about this video is how Neil puts in 1000 percent whether its his own band or someone else's, and you see who he is through his playing. He was humble and professional always, and will never be replaced - EVER

Neil Peart is a "one off" That is what sets a drummer apart from ALL the others. I've followed his career from a young age,and i would like to thank him for sharing his talent and music for all these years.
+panda44r well said. In the late 60's when I began to play a kit at the ripe age of 9, I was playing Beatles, Cream, the Who, CCR and the like on my way to discovering Ian Paice when 'In Rock' came out. Paicey served me very well throughout the early to mid 70's. Then I bought 'Fly by Night' and the rest, as they say, was history. My progress from 1975 through 'Moving Pictures' was astonishing. Being self taught, I had no idea of my potential, but those 6 years emulating "the Professor" turned me into the drummer I became and I thank Neil Peart for that inspiration. I was lucky to see Rush on 4 tours in a row starting in 1978 with 'Hemispheres' through 'Signals' in 1982 and now 2018 marks my 50th year as a drummer.
It’s so interesting to hear a private artist open up and talk instead of merely obliging his fans’ questions. Such a warm person, and such a loss! RIP Neil.
I swear, without even knowing Neil was tracking this song, I could close my eyes and still know it was him behind the kit! His playing is so indelible that I've been beautifully scared by his drumming for the last 42 years of my life.
Neil Peart can do anything. Was there ever any doubt that he could play with other bands outside of Rush? Neil could do it all. Some things and some people can never be duplicated. It must have been mind blowing to have Neil Peart play drums on one of your tracks. The experience of a lifetime. This is making me want to get my acoustic drums out again and start banging. Amazing, one of the best drummers on the planet, best lyricist, and the most under rated author out there---his books are truly more well written than the vast majority of "well known" authors/writers. Though I truly hate to see the touring come to an end, you almost have to tip your hat and just say thank you for the decades of giving the world such incredibly awesome music. There will never be another 3 piece rock band that will touch what these guys have done. Peart just seems like the most down to earth guy, always smiling with a great sense of humor, and such quick wit. Really going to miss seeing them every year:( Thought it was so cool to see so many young people, 20 and under, at the last Rush show I saw, their music is truly timeless, wish them all the best in their "retirement"---hope they live long and prosper:)
Yes...indeed...it is MIND BOGGLING to think of what Neil has done within his career(s) and also how he has conquered tragedies that would have been insurmountable to/for many. The 'drums drive' he shares with us on the outside is a reflection of the thunder he must have had inside, just to carry on and with so much poetry and grace. Neil is a lesson in living multi-dimensionally and has had such a great part as Rush, in my life since 1979. Glad i was born and in the right time for Rush. I used to wish that i was his neighbor ...maybe i might have scored some 'hand-me-down' DRUMS ! :D:D:D
Truly amazing! He gave that track everything that makes up Neil Peart. A real "edge of your seat" performance. Perfect phrasing throughout the track with subtle nuances in all the right places to incredibly bombastic and perfectly executed fills.
You are obviously not a musician. Hendrix is an obvious great, but a completely different type of music. He was also a very sloppy guitarist, kind of like Jimmy Page----both were once in a lifetime players, but I seriously doubt you would have ever seen a threesome like Hendrix having the chops to pull off YYZ or Xanadu.
As 2020 draws to a close, this video brings a tear to my eye. Mr. Peart was not a friend but we did meet a few times. He was very generous with his time and talent. I was having an issue with adapting to a new technique and he gave me a few ideas on how to erase my old habits. He loved what he did. He loved being a musician. He loved being a writer, he loved being a motorcyclist. And for all those things, we have much admiration for him. Rest in peace Chef Elwood. You forever will live in our hearts. I know this video is from 2013, but that's ok. It is a historical document now.
If I was to have never seen the video, I’m sure I would’ve guessed it being Neil. His trademark ride cymbal pattern, bass drum pattern and chorus accents and fills are his alone.
God blessed this guy with such a wonderful life. The joy of his playing he gave to so many people. The influence he passed to countless drummers, myself included. He was one of the greats who lived and shared such a great life. Neil reached the pearly gates and once Saint Peter saw him Saint Peter did an insane air drum roll from the 6” concert all the way down to the 18” floor and asked Neil…”tell me how you did that one fill”. He was a good man that lived a great and blessed life.
..yep. VERY well said..sadly, MY understanding was Neil was EITHER ‘agnostic’ or something OTHER THAN a Believer in Christ. WHEN I heard that, it BROKE my heart.
Watching in this saddest of weeks when we learn of the all too early death of Bubba, Prat, The Professor... Mr Neil Peart - listening to the lyrics - i can't help notice "Memory, it's mostly Instamatic What's left of me is left to you" Cherish your time with Neil, I cherish the 99 times i was fortunate enough to see him perform - gifting me the sound track to my life.... RIP Neil... we must all donate to Cancer Charities to help defeat the hell that is Cancer .. that took Neil, His wife, and many people who were close to us....
A lovely message. It's a sad time indeed, losing dearest Neil. We are here, remembering and paying tribute not only to Neil but, like you say, also to our loved ones and friends who have not survived their encounter with cancer. There are so, so many of us and if we pull together and contribute in some way (not just financially), we can discover more about the various forms of cancer and how it can be treated successfully.
If you haven't seen "A little more noise" here on youtube its a must session. Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Stewart Copeland, and many others just making some noise!
Everyone is sharing Neil’s Rush stuff now for very good reason, but this video sticks with me because we get to see him loose and relaxed and talking about his process for writing and recording drum parts.
I watched the video after commenting (hadn’t seen it in years) and now I’m a blubbering mess over a dude I never met. Posthumously this is a fantastic tribute video.
What an honor to have a brilliant, but shy and introverted human guesting on two of your songs. As a fan of his for 40 years, the now common and predictable words like "influence" and "poet" become almost not enough for what he meant to his fans. But the dignity, strength, respect, ingenuity he gave the instrument will be felt by millions in coming generations. I've always loved this song as it means a lot to me in a personal way. As this was nearly the final sessions of his life, it's nice to see him spread his wings with other musicians. thanks to him for a life well lived and a vapor trail that will continue to light skies across people's imaginations.
When this was released nearly 8 years ago, I had only discovered Vertical Horizon within the past year. I was addicted to their sound from the moment I heard their sound. Neil became an inspiration, my only inspiration for many, many years, after the release of 2112 in the late 70's. As a drummer myself, I could not believe that one man could pull off those drum techniques. "Some were born to move the world, and move the world you did! Exit the Professor..." Thank you Neil Ellwood Peart
This footage is gold! I never knew Neil collaborated with Vertical Horizon. I came here after I saw a post and photo you did of Neil on Twitter. The song is phenomenal. Thanks for recording this historic session. Bless you🙏 #RIPNeilPeart
+HomesliceDrummer I'm a huge Neil peart fan, rush is my favorite band, but if I'm wrong someone correct me, but "the professor" doesn't apply to his drumming at all, he is called that because of how much he reads, he is worldly, well read, and an intellect, that is the true meaning as the professor, however most would think it is because of his drumming
This is really cool. Like the fact that he is playing with another band and adding his style, yet still able to sound like he is part of this band. Great job Neil! I like the song as well.
A lot of tears are still being shed. A huge loss not only to the world of music but also to humanity. What a beautiful, remarkable and generous man. 😢🙏❤️
Neil's complex, yet in the pocket, drumming is committed to memory. And usually in any song he plays drums on, there are a dozens parts. And with Rush.......dozens of songs. He plays these parts flawlessly and accurately with every show. Truly one the world's greatest drummers, creatively and technically. (IMO) RIP Neil.
If I had heard this song without knowing it was Neil Peart, I would known that it couldn't possibly be anyone else by the second verse. I had tears in my eyes when he did the double-bass rolls in the last chorus! WOW! What a treasure this video is. THANK YOU!
This is such an epic drum track on par with anything else he has ever recorded with rush. I like to save this song for around this time of year in the autumn it just feels special. Also this is one of the greatest choruses to any song I’ve ever heard
Only recently heard about Mr Neil Peart, I recently got back into listening to RUSH again. Loads of great memories linked to many tracks, never did get to see them live. Anyways farewell to the worlds best drummer.
Neil has always been someone I looked up to since the age of 15 when I first heard Exit Stage Left. I'm glad they finally get the praise I always thought was lacking for 3 of the most awesome musicians ever. Especially Neil. I named the 2nd of my twins Neil. I once read a post where some idiot said Neil sucked and he could only play in RUSH because his style would never fly with any other band. The dude who said that should watch this vid. And eat that crow!
Elsewhere some guy posted that he never liked Peart's drumming because - "He couldn't play groove to save his life. As a bass player I like drummers who can groove." WTF does that mean? As a bass player....?
Followed and seen Rush many times since 77 and Neils legacy will continue for eternity and deservedly so, he is a Rock God and his final gift to me and others was to lead us to Vertical Horizon and the great album that is Echoes From The Underground 👍😎
Had to stop by and watch this again. Gone but never forgotten. Thank you Neil for your music and even more so for the inspiration! Rest easy Professor.

Reminds me of his earlier playing! He will be missed ! :(
There will be music schools named after this visionary artist.
Stouffville, Ontario has a public school named for Oscar Peterson, which I think is really cool. He was another ambassador of excellence and humility.
Unfortunately probably not. Adam Levine or Katie Perry though I bet.
The professor… Neal being Neal. RIP sir. You were the best! EVER!!!
Wow!
Neil will always be my favorite drummer. I really like this song too.
Watching in this saddest of weeks when we learn of the all too early death of Bubba, Prat, The Professor... Mr Neil Peart -
listening to the lyrics - i can't help notice
"Memory, it's mostly Instamatic
What's left of me is left to you"
Cherish your time with Neil, I cherish the 99 times i was fortunate enough to see him perform - gifting me the sound track to my life....
RIP Neil... we must all donate to Cancer Charities to help defeat the hell that is Cancer .. that took Neil, His wife, and many people who were close to us....
A lovely message. It's a sad time indeed, losing dearest Neil. We are here, remembering and paying tribute not only to Neil but, like you say, also to our loved ones and friends who have not survived their encounter with cancer. There are so, so many of us and if we pull together and contribute in some way (not just financially), we can discover more about the various forms of cancer and how it can be treated successfully.
this is such an incredible drum part, must have been the thrill of a lifetime to stand there while Neil played this
He just loves every moment of drums. A true master and honest human on a higher level.❤
This has me imagining his post touring life as a session musician. I haz sad.
Great footage seeing him work. Fun song too.
If you haven't seen "A little more noise" here on youtube its a must session. Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Stewart Copeland, and many others just making some noise!
Neil's skills give me thrills and chills!
head for the mills that fill the hills.
and fills that pay the bills
chatty cathy
Everyone is sharing Neil’s Rush stuff now for very good reason, but this video sticks with me because we get to see him loose and relaxed and talking about his process for writing and recording drum parts.
I watched the video after commenting (hadn’t seen it in years) and now I’m a blubbering mess over a dude I never met. Posthumously this is a fantastic tribute video.
The Professor. Eternal RESPECT Neil. Thank you for years of inspiring MILLIONS on & in this earthly realm.
I'm sure I forgot about this, but it's more beautiful, than I thought.
Thank all of you, for this, in a thousand different ways.
Who sang on this masterpiece?
@@robertashton8069 Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon.
Neil really brings a ton of excitement to the song. Wonderful job.
Watched it again and this is a great Peart tribute.
RIP Neil. Thank you for gracing us with your talents all this time.
Saw Rush in 75 in 92 then their last 40 tour and they were excellent..great to see Neil play outside of Rush..RIP Neil Peart
Peart almost puts the legends to shame. He is absolutely incredible!
I can listen to Neil talk forever, let alone, watch/listen to him play. All I can say is, Thanks Neil.......
This is one terrific song! And Neil's drumming is perfect as always. Wow. More please!
This footage is gold! I never knew Neil collaborated with Vertical Horizon. I came here after I saw a post and photo you did of Neil on Twitter. The song is phenomenal. Thanks for recording this historic session. Bless you🙏 #RIPNeilPeart
I enjoyed watching The Professor apply his craft to a different band's music. Very cool video
+Casey Bitts in your rush to correct someone you blew it; "The Professor" has been one of Neil's many nicknames for four decades.
Also known as “Pratt”. When used in conjunction with “Dirk & Lerxst”!! 🤪
Such a giving person I miss neil peart so much. Thank you for all the great music you blessed us with !!! RIP Neil Peart
Incredible song and drumming. I did not know that Neil played with other artists so thanks for sharing this.
Suddenly this band became awesome! They played with so much more aggression and attack! God bless you Neil!
Now I want to see every time Neil's done work with any other band!
RIP Mr. Neil Peart.
You never stop inspiring people.
Where ever you are up there you must be pleased. Instamaticcally.
This is really cool. Like the fact that he is playing with another band and adding his style, yet still able to sound like he is part of this band. Great job Neil! I like the song as well.
I never get tired of coming to see and hear this song, and the only reason is to see Master Neil Peart... And the song is beautiful!
Great song with Neil nice job, I love Neil more than I knew, what a great soul, Im still crying a month after his passing
Robert Stahl I’ve had the EXACT same experience. Damn
A lot of tears are still being shed. A huge loss, not just to music, but to humanity. What a beautiful, remarkable, generous man Neil was.
A lot of tears are still being shed. A huge loss not only to the world of music but also to humanity. What a beautiful, remarkable and generous man. 😢🙏❤️
Neil Peart can make any song sound great . I tear up every time I see him now . What a wonderful soul he was . 😢
Todd Lavigne so much pocket!
Wow, that was so cool to see Neil playing that. It's amazing to see his style and drum voice shine through like that. It's pretty magical. 😍
I love watching Neil just jamming that smile on his face makes me happy I hope he's happy sure looks like he is.
Only recently heard about Mr Neil Peart, I recently got back into listening to RUSH again. Loads of great memories linked to many tracks, never did get to see them live. Anyways farewell to the worlds best drummer.
Nobody played drums like Neil. When you heard him play you knew it was Neil. He had his own unique sound. RIP Neil.
My heart is still breaking. So beautiful on so many levels. He was in pure ecstasy omg
A tear comes to my eye every time I watch a NP performance since he passed! The GOAT!
I feel so blessed that I got to enjoy 45 years of his recordings. RIP pratt. We still miss you
Neil .. you are and been one of a kind .. miss you bro . RIP 💐
His death hit me very hard.... as I'm sure it did you. RIP Neil Ellwood Peart.
He is such an amazing drummer/percussionist. Great song.
Had to stop by and watch this again. Gone but never forgotten. Thank you Neil for your music and even more so for the inspiration! Rest easy Professor.
