Breakfast can be a feast when it comes to the Taiwanese style of getting tanked up for the day. But why is the menu so schizophrenic?
With dishes of diverse origins and styles all being plonked together on the same table, Eric Sze (史官) explores the morning scene from New York to Taiwan, savoring a complex weave of recipes and uncovering memories from a lost generation.

on my list of todo is visiting your restaurants. Before I moved to the US, my dad's favorite was shaobin youtiao. Now that I'm older, i love shaobin with pork sung for breakfast.

I need to find a place in San Diego that serves a good scallion pancake. Also, my grandparents had a little breakfast shop in Penghu where they sold you tiao and soy milk. I used to watch my grandma fry up the you tiao in a giant wok when I was a kid.

High calorie breakfast. Same as Malaysian breakfast. Eating it every day is enough to give you a heart attack one day. As much as I love congee, I can't eat it every day. Variety is king.

    台灣本地早餐? 哈哈哈哈! 五十歲以下知道什麼是台灣本地早餐嗎?
    大概只知道從美而美出現的早餐吧! #越古早的台灣早餐越像福建閩南地區吃稀飯與白飯。

None of it is healthy for mind-body. A lot of my relatives have digestive issues or worst. I do a whole separate Mediterranean gut-heart-mind homeostasis diet and never looked back! Every once in a while I try a fun feast here and there but 80/20 is best for total fitness.

You are aware that Taiwan is Han Chinese majority and most of its dishes, safe for normal regional variations and food from the natives of the island, are Chinese and similar to those in the PRC/Mainland, right? Even the famous "Baos" are from Fujian, and Tapioca Pearls were introduced to the Chinese in the Mainland, not directly in the island.

16:20 I just want to argue the semantics of the word hamburger, calling it a pork-based hamburger and not a beef-based hamburger is sort of silly because traditionally, ham is pork. It's silly backwards english people who called a beef-based burger hamburger to begin with.

I’m a fan of Eric Sze and I love Taiwanese food, but this video does neither any favors. The video production is mediocre. The editing is poor. There’s also illogic, or more like plot holes, throughout. For instance: Why was Eric in Singapore in the beginning? Things get mentioned and then there’s either no elaboration or follow-up. Lastly and not the least in the various issues: that jarring gong-as-segue. It comes across Orientalist and corny like an old Travel Channel video.
