    Q: What is Savoury?
A: Savoury is an herb similar to thyme or sage. It can be found fresh or dried: kit.co/bonitas...
See our Pickled Onions recipe here: • Pickled Onions - Tradi...
    Serves: 6
    Recipe for Corned Beef Cakes
    Ingredients:
    1 - 340g can Corned Beef
    4 Medium potatoes
    2 Medium onions
    ½ Cup flour
    1 Large egg
    Pinch of pepper
    1 Tsp savoury
    ¼ Cup milk
Pinch sea salt for boiling potatoes
1 Tbsp butter and oil for frying onions
    Prep Time: 10 Min
    Cook Time: 30 Min
    Method:
Peel and boil potatoes with a pinch of salt until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and let cool.
In a frying pan, add butter and oil, then sauté onions until golden brown.
Open the can of corned beef, chop it into small pieces, and place it in a bowl. Add potatoes, savoury, and pepper. Mash everything together.
Add sautéed onions to the mixture and combine.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. In a separate plate, mix flour with a pinch of pepper.
Form the corned beef mixture into patties, then dip each patty in the egg wash and coat with flour. If the mixture is warm, chill it for 15 minutes before forming patties.
Heat butter and olive oil in a frying pan, then fry patties for a few minutes on each side until golden brown.
Serve corned beef cakes with pickled onions, a sunny-side-up egg, fried touton, or bread.
    Bonita’s Tips:
Sautéed onions add a great flavor to the cakes. If using raw onions, grate them first.
Salt is optional, as canned corned beef is already salty.

My Mom made the same kind of patties when I was young. She was always trying to find ways to stretch a dollar with 10 to feed in our family. This is a wonderful meal to do if you have some surprise visitors. It’s all ingredients you’d have on hand normally, and it looks fancy being a patty. Another 😋 YUM vote from me!

My mother used to call canned corned beef "Bully Beef" too. We live in Australia. We used to have it in sandwiches with homemade mustard pickles for lunches. Later on, I shared a house with an Asian mate who'd make a fantastic stir fry with a can of corned beef and loads of veggies.

I tried making these last night, and while they tasted fantastic, I made a couple of mistakes:
    a) I should have worked with room temperature or chilled potato as the patties were too warm, loose and dipping them into the egg wash and flour made me think of playing with mud pies when I was a kid. They did make it into the frying pan... :D
    b) I did saute the onions, and added in some garlic as well, but I could have taken them a bit further as the onion was a bit crunchier than I was expecting, and once mixed into the corned beef and potato, they don't really cook any further...
I had a bit of fun making it, and have plenty of leftovers for lunch. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

I have loved this recipe since I first made it. However, I struggled with the cakes holding together and browning enough. The challenges were in using rice flour and Yukon Gold potatoes due to food allergies. The solutions were actually simple once I stumbled on them. The rice flour just needed a bit longer than three minutes to brown. The issue with the yellow potatoes was that they are a lower starch variety, so they didn't have the binding power of a russet. I found that mashing them longer causes them to become stickier at a certain point. You can feel the change when it happens. With these small tweeks I have Bonita's perfect Corned Beef Cakes! Thanks so much for your videos! They have enriched my life as well as my diet!

My sister married a Puerto Rican husband who grew up eating Corn Beef in a tomato soup sauce with little hunks of potatoes. It stretched for a large family of 9 when he was growing up. She would serve it over fluffy white rice. I grew to love it so much that I added this recipe to my own when I got married. Your version uses the same ingredients but in a totally different way ... fried as in patties. I'm going to try this with my next can of Corn Beef. It looks absolutely delicious and easy. Thank you ..... I love this idea, but since I live alone, it will probably last me a week. I'll see how well they freeze. when I make my sisters versions, I've learned to cut the contents in HALF so I can wrap it in saran wrap then in aluminum for the next time I''m in the mood for this delicious treat. I get 2 meals out of each can. Each one will last me for at least 3 meals each batch. Here's my hint I learned a few years ago. NEVER wrap any kind of meat with just Aluminum foil. The aluminum LEECHES the metal in to your food and has been found to contribute to alzheimer. So wrap it first with saran wrap and then the aluminum. My mother-in-law taught me to do it this way. She wanted to keep freezer burn away from the meat but now we know it also helps prevent Alzheimer.

Rob, Newfoundland remains the Second Ireland. I'm not sure you will hear a stronger Irish accent, outside of Ireland itself, in any other part of North America outside of here. I'm from rural Newfoundland myself, living in St. John's for over, 30 odd, years now, and people still, can't quite, place my accent. Of course, I don't think I have a accent myself, but it seems to be strong with some people I speak to. As my last name should suggest, I'm descended from either Welsh or Irish Ancestry, haven't yet, pinpointed exactly, where, but edging with Ireland actually, and have been in Newfoundland some 200 years now. Our family goes back, roughly, seven generations here, which works out to be around, 200 years. But I think that's true for most Newfoundlanders of Irish descent.
I hope some day, somebody will make a documentary about this, as I think people on both sides of the pond will find it highly, interesting.
      My Best. Out.

Thank you Bonita so much for sharing. My son who is 33 asked about Corned Beef the other day. My friend told him 'you don't want that it's gross!' I would have tended to agree, just going by the looks of it. But now after seeing you make this recipe and how delicious they look, I am seriously going to need to try making these! Who would have known without your video!

What on earth is in the spice "savoury". Never heard of it before, I'll need to do a Google search.

In Nova Scotia, they call it Summer Savoury. It works very well in a turkey stuffing. Every spice cupboard should have a jar of savoury.

I looked it up too. You can substitute thyme or sage for it.

Hi Bonita. Those bully beef cakes takes me back to my childhood when my Mother used to make them for our Saturday tea. We used to have them with toast and baked beans. They were really tasty and now that you have awoken my tastebuds I think I will make up a batch this weekend. If my memory is correct, my mother used to put the raw onions, thyme, a little hot pepper(Scotch Bonnet Peppers) and sometimes even some green peas in her mix.......My goodness, I am drooling.... Take good care, keep safe and healthy Bonita. God Bless...
