Wow!!! This is a recipe that I had loved as a young person growing up in a small Newfoundland fishing community, but had forgotten about for so many years. So glad I found you, thank you for the memories (food sometimes bring back the best), you are an amazing culinary instructor and I am now an avid follower. Bonita, you rock hun.

Well never saw that recipe in my travels. So I’m a Certified Executive Chef and culinary instructor this is my two cents. Making me real hungry! I just know a casserole in your hands is off the chain. Healthy hot meal what more can you ask for. Thanks!
Well I learned this is called Shipwreck Great name! Do I think this is slop? No. It’s regional cuisine the folk art of cooking. Is it haute cuisine ? No and doesn’t pretend to be.
@Just think : Don't be pretentious. He was being gracious and acknowledged it was a healthy dish, which it was. If you think that was "comfort food" you didn't grow up anywhere close to the south. It was good, healthy eats...
@Just think : Yeah, I traveled all over the world with the Marine Corps eating some of the finest foods available and I am not a "certified exec chef" either but I am a certified exec eater - this is simple, good, healthy eats. Calling it slop is an unnecessary and inaccurate insult.
@Just think : Look, I get that it's not "fine cuisine" but billions of people across the globe have been sustained by this type of food for many years and many of these simple recipes have been handed down over the centuries. Just, please, don't throw their experiences to the curb. Calling it slop is an insult to them, it was to me until you proved reasonable. Now, how about you and I sample some cuisine I've never tried... French perhaps...?
@Just think ..... what's your point?chillax.....and thank that man for his service.....is that a badge of honor that you have been all over France? really.....did I mention?...take a chill pill
One thing that's appealing about this recipe is that it doesn't have cheese in it! While I like cheese, it seems almost every casserole or "hot dish" recipe has cheese. Sometimes its nice to have something without it.
This is true, sometimes its nice to have a casserole that don't have cheese and it still taste amazing. Thank you for your message and for stopping by. :) Bonita
Yum , I've done this but without the rice and used mushroom soup instesd. But now I must try it your way with my own twist of canned tomatoes with the tomato soup or salsa and a handful of feta cheese atop the onions.
This dish is AMAZING, I never knew where my Mom got it from but now I know - god bless! Sometimes she'd use hotdogs or Vienna sausage which I love to this day and use myself, sometimes real sausage like in this vid. For an extra treat she'd sometimes mix parsnips in with the carrots and turnips in with the potatoes. I seemed to be the only one who LIKED turnips so I loved it. Awesome dish, THANK YOU for this vid, I'm going to make it for the first time on my own. xx
That is so wonderful and I'm glad you enjoyed our seven layer dinner recipe, sometimes leftovers if its good don't last long. :) Enjoy to the fullest and stay safe. :) Bonita
In MN USA we love our casseroles and hot dishes! This was surprisingly light and enjoyable. The tomato soup changed with the vegetable juice, rendered sausage, and starches into a fantastic, rich gravy. But, with all the vegetables made this an incredible, satisfying light, yet savory comfort food. Thank you for sharing I will enjoy this many more times. I added one green bell pepper sliced into thin rings, I also added 1/3 cup rice next time will go for 1/2 cup and I used frozen peas with an extra 1/2 soup can of water.
That is so wonderful and I'm so glad you enjoyed our recipe and your feed back is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing that with us. I love your spin on adding peppers and less rice and more green frozen peas. Nice :) Thank you so stopping by. Bonita

HI Heather, thank you for your message and I'm so glad you enjoyed our seven layer dinner recipe. I think meat balls would go lovely with this recipe and cabbage is always lovely. Stay safe and take care....:) Bonita
when my children were small I used to make what I called "shipwreck stew" I used an 80/20 hamburger (raw) on the bottom and then potatoes, onions(diced small) sliced carrots, diced celery and what ever canned veggies I had, then used the tomato soup (rinsed out can ) or any variety of canned soup I had each soup brings a different flavor. . .each layer had a small amount of salt and pepper . . baked in 350 oven until the veggies were done about 1 hour inexpensive and very filling.
We make something similar, ground beef, a layer of onions, carrots and sliced potatoes and tomato juice to cover. One of my favourites as we were growing up and you could feed a crowd served with homemade bread.
Do you soften the potatoes first for this? I didn't and they were a bit firm, so I tried again, cooked for longer on 180c or 350f for translation, same as what you said, idk lol what am I doing wrong? I even tried adding extra water, laying them differently etc. Pls help😆 ive made 3 now and I'm going nuts.
@@Faxy95 so sorry that you have had so much trouble ! I used a 9X13 pan . . .1 lb of 80/20 hamburger spread out on the bottom . .. . ...about 4 medium raw peeled russet potatoes sliced about 1/4 " thick" . . 1 used 1 large onion because we like onions, but diced small so the kids didn't notice them !) . 3-4 carrots sliced about 1/4 " thick . a cup of frozen veggies . . .each layer gets salt and pepper to taste . . .then I mixed a can of soup with a can of water and poured over the top . . and covered with aluminum foil and sealed the edges. . . . . and baked for about an hour at 350 . . . I so hope that your family will enjoy this Shipwreck ! PS I used a mandolin to slice the potatoes . . .
I do fennel, leeks and onions as a layer we like the flavors. I make my own tomato soup. Surprisingly my mom liked to use V-8 juice she said it was more flavorful.
So lovely and I must try that the next time I make ours. V8 got a lovely taste and it makes prefect sense to use it in cooking. Thank you for stopping by and enjoy to the fullest!! Bonita
I grew up on this dish and then made it for my family. It has been about 10 years since I have made it, I am 60. I just can not believe I have not made this dish for so long.. It is now on the menu and I will be calling the kids to come for dinner.
Being vegan now I used vegan sausages and I made my own sort of tomato soup. I use a can of tomato sauce and I added some garlic because that is in regular tomato soup and a little bit of water and a little bit of soy milk because a can of tomato soup contains Dairy. I think it worked out really well I enjoyed it very much and I was able to freeze about six portions. :-) my mother and father always had tea with dinner which I call supper. My dad was Scottish and my mother was French Canadian so there was bound to be T in there somewhere! Lol
Elizabeth Shaw Haha I always love your messages, thank you for your story. We have a Irish background and growing up in Newfoundland we always had tea with every meal. I didn't have my first coffee until I was 21 years old and me and my husband more to northern Canada and lived there for 30 years. This is a lovely meal and what's so good about this you don't have to have any meat in their at all but it's a matter of ones choice. Have a lovely day. 🤗 Bonita
This recipe caught my eye. My family was one of the earliest Newfoundland settlers between 1515-1530. I'm looking at recipes and anything to reconnect to the culture of my ancestors. I think even I can make this one. Thanks.
That looks delicious! If I try to make it, I'll probably use cream of mushroom soup instead of tomato soup. Probably with some sliced mushrooms added to it.
ohh i'm going to use this, with a few substitutions lol. I need to get rid of that butternut squash and canned green beans. This is such a good idea, thank you!
Had lots of left over ground beef and Italian sausage from making home made pizza 2 nights ago! Had no idea what i was going to do with it. Then i seen this video ! Already had evrything already in the pantry! Now its in the oven cooking for supper ! Thanks Bonita ! :)
@@bonniebrown1305 I would part cook it so the oil won't go through the vegetables but if you are using a lean ground beef maybe put the meat layer at the bottom if you are not going to cooking it first. Bonita

But Raymond has a beautiful flower garden in the summer, so that will make up for that. Thank you so much for leaving a message and enjoy. :) Bonita
Wow. I have everything I need for this dish. I am going to use smoked ham for my meat. May use Cream of Chicken or Cream of Celery or Cream of Mushroom soup for the ham. Thanks Bonita.
@@cathyrowe594 I don't like tomato soup either, but sometimes the other ingredients make it much better. Remember that lasagna and pizza have some ingredients in common with tomato soup, and they tend to taste good to everybody.
That looks similar to a stovetop "casserole" my mother used to make with meatballs, potatoes, carrots, onions and tomato sauce. Us kids loved it. I love peas in that kind of dish. I don't use commercial soup anymore but the ingredients for that tomato soup is basically tomato puree, wheat flour, sugar and citric acid. I wouldn't want to sugar anyway. I would probably mix a bit of flour into tomato puree and use stock. I am likely to try this. Thanks.

Good frugal meal, a little goes a long way. Like another poster, I detect that slight Irish accent that Newfoundlanders can have at times. Not a 'brogue' as such, more the old Dublin accent. Love it! I think I might be able to get my poor hapless husband to cook this all on his own!! Tfs. :-)
My dad use to make this too - we lived at the north end of Gaspe - only difference was we used a can of diced tomatoes with the water that's in the can, instead of the can of tomato soup! You made me homesick, so this is supper tonight! Thanks!
A Maritime Dish regardless from Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Zucchini is great, eggplant and instead of canned goods, use always fresh. For Vegans like myself, use Gardein Meat-free Beefless Ground- the ultimate. Made from water, soya protein etc......great for all dishes that regular ground beef would be used. Do not forget to have homemade pickles with it.
I thought about adding Jalapeno Cheese a couple layers thru. I'm glad she says use whatever we like out of the garden. I'm also trying to buy some land to build my own place to call Home.
Thank you for this recipe we just tried this out tonight during these quarantine times, not one complaint from my kids and I actually had seconds was surprised how much it goes around and good flavor you wouldn't expect! my dad was from Halifax and would make this but he used ground beef. You put uncooked beef on the top then the tomato soup and when done the fat off the beef made it's way to the potatoes and added delicious flavor. He used a big yellow mixing bowl that was oven safe . This dish is even better the next day. Thanks for the memory.

I'm from south Louisiana (Lafayette), and I was very curious about the accent which is so similar to what I hear in the southeastern part of our state. We are such a melting pot here, many dispersed French Canadians (cajuns), Irish, German, British (England, Scotland and Wales), Spanish, and French that pronounce "th" as "d" sound. I closed my eyes during the video and imagined being in my great grandparent's home...such a cherished memory!
Love this recipe. Here in the NE of England we have a similar dish called Panacalty (Pan-ack-al-tee). The concept of layered Veg, meat of choice, and a sauce all baked together is the common thread. It can be kept in the oven until the family are all round the table! We use Canned corned beef, or left over Gammon or Ham. Also a meat gravy instead of tomato soup. I've also made a variation with Chicken for the meat and Mushroom soup for the sauce. I love that this idea is used across the globe each area making it their own way. I'll be bringing a taste of Newfoundland home very soon. Thank you.
Oh my your recipe sounds lovely, almost sounds like our baked beef stew with pasty. I love one pot dishes, they are prefect for easy family meals and leftovers. Thank you so much for leaving a message and sharing your lovely recipe. Have a wonderful day :) Bonita

Hi Margaret, welcome and thank you for letting us know where you are from, I'm so glad you enjoyed our recipe and video for seven layer dinner, one of my dads favourite recipes for family night. :) Happy New Year...stay safe. :) Bonita
This looks amazing! I could almost smell it as it cooked. This is real comfort food.
Bonita, YES, what a great easy dinner. Love it. Will get some sausage then make this Dish.
Quick and Easy. Thanks again for sharing.
That sounds wonderful, I'm sure you will love this one. Thank you for letting us know, and enjoy to the fullest. :) Bonita
Andy Evans Thank you for your lovely message, I agree these old Newfoundland recipes have done the same for me, so many wonderful recipes I haven't even touched on but I'm glad you are enjoying them. Please don't forget to subscribe to my program and visit www.bonitaskitchen.com for many more of our delicious childhood recipes. Thanks Bonita
Fabulous thank you Bonita I will definitely be making this dish
You are very welcome and thank you for stopping by and enjoying our recipe. Take care.... :) Bonita
I love seeing how other countries cook their meals and what they eat! Thanks for sharing...it looks delicious!
Yeah Newfoundland is another country, that's for sure... I'm only kidding, calm down. TBH I want to try this myself. But for some reason my brain's telling me it needs sourkraut. Yep I'm doin it.
That looks so good I may try it with potatoes, corn instead of peas, carrots n turnip n sausage
That sounds lovely and I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe, its always nice to have a one pan dish with the favours of everything together. Enjoy and have a lovely day...Bonita
Holy moly! My mom made this for us, I made it for my kids and I’m still eating it today. Never ever knew it’s origins. So happy to see this😀
What is wrong with cheese?
Good Job. In 1980 I traveled around Newfoundland one summer. The people were so nice and very generous. Thank you.
Hi David: Thank you for your message and for visiting our channel, I'm so glad you had a visit to NL we have a very unique province, culture and accent. I'm sure you got to taste some of our traditional food on your trip, thank you once again for stopping by. :) Bonita
Can’t wait to try this,, looks soooo good
One thing that's appealing about this recipe is that it doesn't have cheese in it! While I like cheese, it seems almost every casserole or "hot dish" recipe has cheese. Sometimes its nice to have something without it.
This is true, sometimes its nice to have a casserole that don't have cheese and it still taste amazing. Thank you for your message and for stopping by. :) Bonita
Omg I agree!!
i'm still putting cheese on it, sorry Jeff!
@@PixelSlayer247 NOOO!!!! lol
I love that there isn't cheese also! I want to make this vegan, so I'll just use beyond sausage and AWAY I GO! 😀
Yum , I've done this but without the rice and used mushroom soup instesd. But now I must try it your way with my own twist of canned tomatoes with the tomato soup or salsa and a handful of feta cheese atop the onions.
Sounds lovely, thank you for your message and for stopping by enjoy. :) Bonita
Ham with feta sounds delicious, with a layer of spinach and/or black olives, but what kind of soup?
I haven't seen this dish made in 40 years. I am going to make this one night soon.
That is so cool and I'm glad to help and enjoy. :) Bonita
Awesome dish, THANK YOU for this vid, I'm going to make it for the first time on my own. xx
Made a huge casserole dish worth of this with the intention for it to last me the better part of a week. Lasted 2 days. Thanks, mom.
Bonita
Looks like a nice, simple, but hearty hot dinner for a cold winter’s night!
Wholesome home meal so yummy. I will use your idea using meatballs with the addition of some shredded cabbage for tonight's dinner 👍👌 thank you Bonita for sharing your time and recipes 🤗🇿🇦
Phyllis Kinder that sounds delicious!
Phyllis Kinder My family would love that! My granddaughter is not quite two and loves meals like that with lots of vegetables.
PS I used a mandolin to slice the potatoes . . .
Now that's a comforting meal!!! I'm betting Raymond loves this one!!! Thanks Bonita...Peace!!!
Bill
Yes Bill this one is Raymond's favourite for sure, thank you for your message I'm glad you enjoyed this one. :) Merry Christmas Bonita and Raymond
That is just awesome. I will try this with my Dutch Oven, and my Instant Pot.
Bonita
You delight the cockles of my heart. Thank you!
🤗 Bonita
:-) I'm vegan too and was thinking "I could totally veganize this dish" :-) Looking forward to making this soon !!!
Trader Joe's has a delicious roasted red pepper tomato soup that would also be great!
Great idea, I didn't much care for the tomato soup either, thanks for the suggestion.
Cream of chicken perhaps?
Or cream of celery/potato for an extra veggie element
Lovely! Thank you, Bonita! I'll make this on my stove top in my cast iron pan as my oven is currently broken. God bless your dad and God bless you!
I’m a Can rinser as well as a bottle rinser 😊
Amen! My Mom was a rinser and I simply followed what she did! Love ya Mom!! RIP
Me too!
me too! :)
Another can rinser here! Merry Christmas, all, and many thanks to Bonita!
ohh i'm going to use this, with a few substitutions lol. I need to get rid of that butternut squash and canned green beans. This is such a good idea, thank you!
platedlizard I have some frozen butternut squash and was thinking it would be great in this!
Had lots of left over ground beef and Italian sausage from making home made pizza 2 nights ago! Had no idea what i was going to do with it. Then i seen this video ! Already had evrything already in the pantry! Now its in the oven cooking for supper ! Thanks Bonita ! :)
My Mom used to make this, she called it 7-deep. She used ground beef for her meat. We loved it!
Yes it made that way as well I guess whatever meat you have I was told would work for the meat layer. :) Bonita
Bebe Butterfield I will try that - thanks for sharing!
Would you cook the ground beef first?
@@bonniebrown1305 I would part cook it so the oil won't go through the vegetables but if you are using a lean ground beef maybe put the meat layer at the bottom if you are not going to cooking it first. Bonita

I wish RUclips was around when my boys were growing up. They would have loved this.

Hi Kim: Thank you so much for your lovely message and for visiting my channel, I'm glad you are enjoying my videos and recipes. I love cooking and baking so it make it very easy for me to show others and I'm glad it shows. :) Thanks Bonita
Just found this! Thank you for making this. Veggies I have from my garden and venison from my husbands hunt! And no dairy!
That sounds lovely Becky, my dad was a organic vegetable farmer and his veggies was the best, I just don't have enough time in my day to start a garden.
I've never liked tomato soup & was thinking mushroom soup might be good instead.
I literally salivated reading this post. the Cream of Celery would be so good
@@cathyrowe594
I don't like tomato soup either, but sometimes the other ingredients make it much better. Remember that lasagna and pizza have some ingredients in common with tomato soup, and they tend to taste good to everybody.
My SIL makes a very similar dish with a homemade white sauce and ham. No rice though, so you don't have to have enough liquid to hydrate the rice.
Ham sounds awesome!
Made this tonight! Came out great! I’m enjoying your broadcasts! Thanks, Bonita from Long Island, NY!
You are very welcome and thank you for your message letting us know, I'm glad you made and enjoyed our recipe. :) Bonita
Thanks.
Thanks for a nice recipe. I just visited Newfoundland, and it's interesting to hear what NF home cooking is like. Newfoundland is so beautiful!
Ive never seen it done this way, but it looks delicious.
On My God what a wonderful sounding recipe! My children are grown and I'm a recent widow but I need to try this for myself. I'm sure it's possible to have this. Thank you SO much for sharing this perfect family recipe and memory with all of us. God Bless and stay safe

Hello Bonita,
I made this dinner for my wife and I (and I am not much of a cook to say the least...) on our last snowy Sunday afternoon. It turned out well and as an added bonus there was enough left overs for an additional 3 suppers. Thanks so much for sharing your work in the kitchen, your channel is great.
Out o' the house with Paul that is wonderful I'm so glad it worked out for you and that you had leftovers. Thank you so much for your message and visiting Bonita's kitchen. We love when our viewers share their cooking stories with us. 😊 Bonita
This is Awesome and brings back so many memories to my childhood too ! I I put a mix of red white and green onions as that layer and carrots and celery mix and ground beef mix s&p and thyme tomato soup peas with juice and I’m going to add the rice cos that’s a wonderful addition !
My girlfriends mum used to make this and I always loved it! I’ve taken it to many potlucks at work and none was left !
Thanks so much for sharing ! Your such a sweet and fabulous Chef !

Thank you its pretty tasty and makes a lovely leftover meal too. Enjoy to the fullest and thank you.... :) Bonita
Tfs. :-)
Actually the Newfoundland accent owes mostly to Western England- but it sure is nice to listen to either way lol 🙂
@@carolsimpson4422 Thanks for clarifying, and apologies to you. It still sounds Irish to my Irish ears though! :-D
All northerners seem to speak dis way, same ting in northern Minnesota, uff da.
Agreed!
My dad use to make this too - we lived at the north end of Gaspe - only difference was we used a can of diced tomatoes with the water that's in the can, instead of the can of tomato soup! You made me homesick, so this is supper tonight! Thanks!
This is very close to a dish called Shipwreck, my mom made in Ohio.
My best friend's mom made Shipwreck in Wisconsin. Still similar...just ground beef
Columbus here!
Sounds lovely and I love the name we are surrounded by water here in Newfoundland, seem like a nice name for it. :) Thanks Bonita
I live in BC and my family loves Shipwreck!
MySjenna yup. My shipwreck is hamburger rice potato tomato soup celery
That looks good and I like that it doesn't dirty a lot of dishes. One pot meals are awesome!!!
Nothing worse than canned peas. Yuck!
I love to try and incorporate as many vegetables as I can in my cooking. This looks delicious. I'm definitely going to try it.
That is wonderful and thank you for leaving a message and stopping by. Enjoy to the fullest. :) Bonita
We call it “End of the Garden” casserole. Cheese was also layered. Good eating.
I thought about adding Jalapeno Cheese a couple layers thru. I'm glad she says use whatever we like out of the garden. I'm also trying to buy some land to build my own place to call Home.

Clara Fierro you are very welcome and thank you for your message, this is a delicious and quick and easy meal to make. I'm glad you are going to make it. Enjoy Bonita
my dad was from Halifax and would make this but he used ground beef. You put uncooked beef on the top then the tomato soup and when done the fat off the beef made it's way to the potatoes and added delicious flavor. He used a big yellow mixing bowl that was oven safe . This dish is even better the next day. Thanks for the memory.

Love the hints of Irish accent.
The Irish don't drop there aitches. That's West Country English you can hear.
@@roywalker1598 She could read the word on a speeding ticket, and I would consider it poetry.
Or Newfoundland. It’s a NFLD accent.
lord jesus by.....it's a Newfoundland accent!
