This was the very first Tom Cruise movie I saw on VHS when I was 5-6 years old. It's also my dad's favorite movie.
The film was a box office success, making $360 million dollars ($900 million dollars today)against a $15 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Original Song, Take My Breath Away.
TOP GUN MAVERICK made $1.4 billion dollars at the box office and it was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Tony Scott was the younger brother of Ridley Scott, and tended to make simpler action films compared to Ridley's more highbrow work, which led to him spending his whole career in Ridley's shadow. Still, for what they are, his movies are quite a good time, with the best in my opinion being the Tarantino-scripted True Romance. Unfortunately, it came to an end with one of the most shocking Hollywood deaths of at least the last 20 years, as in 2012 the 68 year old Tony committed suicide in front of numerous witnesses by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles. He left two messages, but they haven't been released to the public, and apparently they still didn't give much indication of why he did it as Ridley said he had no idea.

While Ridley chased a lot of high concepts and prestige work, I find that Tony was able to take simple stories and paint them with a beautiful palette. I do think his later sepia toned work with Denzel lost a lot of artistic flair though. RIP

I saw this movie when it first came out. I went to see it on an Army base in Munich, Germany. Nothing like seeing this movie in a theater packed with soldiers and airmen. I went with a group of Army wives. And on military bases, the National Anthem is played before the movie. Our husbands had all gone to see it at the earlier show. When we gathered in our apartment at the end of the night, we all discussed our favorite parts. All the guys were talking about the flying, weapons, machinery, and whether or not the military jargon and protocol was correct. One of the husbands turned to us ladies and asked what our favorite scenes were. In unison we shouted "Shirtless Volleyball". End of discussion.

Goose's death is based on a real training incident which took place a few years before Top Gun came out. Also, jet wash isn't only a problem with military aircraft. In November 2001, American flight 587 crashed after takeoff from JFK because it was flying too close behind a 747 which had taken off earlier and got caught in the vortex which that plane created, causing the pilots to lose control. Fortunately, the FAA learns valuable lessons from every air disaster, which led to minimum spacing requirements between aircraft taking off

It's never specified in the movie, but the "red star" MiGs were Libyan. Throughout the 1980s the US Navy & Libyan Air Force mixed it up several times over a body of water known as the Gulf of Sidra, which Libya claimed as territorial waters but the US (and world) recognized as international waters.

    1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this.
    2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash.
    3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎
    4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
    5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
    6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
    7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
    8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
    9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano" She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
    10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
    11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
    12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.
    13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot/mission. (besides Navy recruitment).
PS: Real Navy pilots were used to do the real flying
Mav threw Gooses dog tags because he "let him go".

A few things to keep in mind. This is before the USSR dissolved, it is not the same thing as Russia, and was bigger and better than the USA in several ways. Unlike any other form of combat I am aware of fighter jets of this time let you know when you've been "missile locked onto" which to put it nicely "is not good". In other forms of combat, small arms, artillery, armor, cruise missiles etc. The person either discharges the round/missile, and you either survive or don't. This enables a unique situation where you are able to "send a message" without firing. So you can see where this leads, "incidents" of the sort have been happening to this day.

Great reaction! Your prediction of "machismo" a-plenty was spot on. But being a guy myself, it was also expected and funny as he11. lol. I liked the way you saw Goose's death and the impact on Maverick as being complicated. As servicemen, you have to push through and sort out things later..however, he had enough down-time to let it sink in which made it harder to get through. "Grunts" in the battlefield do not get that time, so, in a way, not having that timeout, they have little choice but to keep going in that moment. People say letting things stay inside is always bad. This is not true for all. Ive known people who internalized a bad event and channel good things out of it. Humans have the ability to be "Vulcanish" and take events in stride if they are mentally strong enough. It is in degrees for people are all different. Ive also seen people mentally break in various ways. Everybody's handling of situations should not be judged by others, but rather accepted as an appropriate response FOR THEM.
Goose dying got a huge reaction at the theater. Anger, sadness...people yelling at the screen. We 70s-80s kids were very loud reactors in theaters. Even at the drive-ins, you could hear people yelling stuff at the screen, beer bottles being thrown in anger/disgust. lol. I thought that was dumb, seeing that you now have broken glass where people had to drive through in the dark. lol. In my years going to the theater/drive-ins, 1 movie got the loudest reactions: "Saving Private Ryan". "The Shining" was 2nd with screams. But Saving Private Ryan even got physical responses, like the 4 or so who vomited either in their popcorn bucket or running to the bathrooms. I nearly joined then in that first 15 minutes.

Story wise the first film was better, the entire conflict of the film was Maverick trying to be number one, but he just wasn’t as Stinger told him at the beginning his name isn’t the biggest in the Navy so Maverick being the underdog made for a better story.
In the second Maverick is written to be this almost superhuman character who can succeed when no one else can withstand and survive the worst disasters and come out on top.

Ah yes, the universal heartbreak of people who signed up for a fun plane movie then have to witness THAT scene ..... so glad you enjoyed the film though!! I went into this film expecting stupid fun, and that was in there for sure, but it was also way more emotional than I expected and even had some interesting commentary on the competition-driven military culture.
Like, (and to be clear this has nothing to do with objecting to anything you said, it’s just my embarrassing locked-and-loaded-at-all-times Top Gun rant) I hear people say all the time that the film is a simplistic arc of Mav learning to follow orders and be a team player, and I *completely* disagree. He's reckless, and a bit of a dick, and he does have maturing to do in those senses. But the opening scene shows him *very much* being a team player-that is, defying military authority with good reason, to help a fellow pilot who needs it! The one time he lets a fellow-flyer down (leaving his wingman) it's not 'just who he is'; quite the opposite, it's him caving to the competition-over teamwork ethic constantly being pushed on the pilots by the military authorities. And as much as I hate Goose’s death, it really effectively exposes the emptiness of the competition-driven ethic-the award that has become Mav’s obsession, which in most films would be the culmination of his arc (whether he won or lost it), goes to Iceman. And neither Mav nor the audience gives a shit. Instead the culmination is he and Ice overcoming the need to win in order to respect and support one another-no thanks to how they were taught.
So in the end, I read the film as being, not about following orders, but about choosing connection and care over the need to win *in defiance of authorities*. And I'm not gonna lie-Top: Gun Maverick made me feel very validated in my reading x)
Anyway, sorry for the essay, I just have Thoughts and Feelings about this film, and I enjoyed your reaction and your thoughts very much!

The homoerotic undertones and overtones are completely intentional. Tony Scott was out for much of his career. RIP
Toss The Hunger (1983) on a watchlist for spooky season. Tony's first movie. It's also beautifully shot and very queer.

I don't think Sam knows who Val Kilmer is. I've never met a person who doesn't know Val Kilmer.

I only distorted the audio as much as I did because so much of this movie has music playing. I’ve been getting clocked more often for just audio-related things as well, so to be able to post this reaction, I unfortunately had to distort a lot of the audio. Sorry!

Hey, just so you know, their voices don't really sound like this. I think you got a bad copy. You're welcome.
