Its a difficult watch in places but very gripping and heart warming though i warn you it can be very naughty in some places and some editing will be required LOL

This movie was ground breaking when it came out and very surprising, especially since the three main characters were all considered a real man's man type of actor. Patrick Swayze usually played the ladies man, Wesley Snipes played heroes, villains, or Blade, and John Leguizamo usually played a wise guy or a thug. So it was very surprising when these three actors took these rolls.

I love this movie. the first time I watched it was with my best friend, he picked the movie and after we watched it he asked what I thought, I told him I thought it was an amazing movie, he asked if men in dressed creeped me out, I told him, I don't care what a person dresses like, all I care about is the person inside.....he burst into tears and that's when he told me he was gay, and all I said was damn dude, you think I didn't already know that and gave him a hug. I later has a similar experience with my other best friend...yes you can have more then one lol and she just blurted it out while we were having lunch and almost caused me to choke.... and I said girl, wait till my mouth is empty next time. I have a wide range of friends, all unique, and as long as they are happy, I doesn't matter to me if they are gay, straight or anything in between, I connect with people's personalities, I've also stood up for my friends too, because they do get a lot of hate, I'm hoping as time goes on, there will be less hate and more love.

carol Ann was Stockard Channing. If you have seen "Grease", she played Rizzo, a completely different part. Channing was extremely popular, and has a magnificent talent. I first saw her in a comedy written by Joan Rivers, "The Girl Most Likely To", where she displayed her versatility in several phases. Beatrice, the soft-voiced blonde woman, was Blythe Danner, the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow. If you ever treat yourself to "1776", you will see her sing and dance.

Note: The old lady with the film history mind that Noxema befriends...she played the librarian that the spirits attack at the beginning of the original "Ghostbusters" movie.
The 'pervert cop' claiming drag queens are 'dangerous... It was pretty clear the hetero men were the dangerous ones. The cop sexually assaulted Vida, the boys gang were readying to rape ChiChi, and Virgil was beating up his wife for the pettiest things. The only danger in the film were those straight men.
So, I'm putting in the recommendation for 1994's "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert".
"To Wong Foo..." was created as the American response to "Priscilla", which was an Australian film (which I think did the 'Buddy Queens Road Trip' mini-genre much better).
Also recommending 1999's "Flawless", starring Robert DeNiro and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

John Leguizamo's role here very much comes out of the talents he'd built in his early stand-up career. While he'd never done drag before, a major part of his routine was doing imitations of his female relatives, who were apparently all various types of "spicy Latina," and after doing it for while he gradually became able to put on a very convincing female presentation.

This is a very "rule of funny" movie, especially regarding how all three of these guys are apparently in drag 24/7 and we never once see them out of it, and it's gotten some criticism for that, but I don't mind at all because shouldn't we want movies with this kind of subject matter to be in any kind of genre? • @pacio49

This film was noteworthy because RuPaul was nowhere close to being a household name and drag was NOT accepted as a mainstream form of entertainment. Patrick Swayze lost fans over this because his tough guy heartthrob Roadhouse/Dirty Dancing fans were stunned that he would do something as gay as Too Wong Foo. His role, in the context of the time, along with Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo, were headline news of the scandalous kind. The humor-as-deflection helped audiences to open up their hearts to the real messages that the film had to offer up.

i remember when this movie came out, me and mom saw it at the local movie theater and laughed sooooo much. The one lady btw in the chinese restaurant before Robin Williams comes out the lady that talked to Wesley Snipes was Nomi Campbell one of the famous runway stars from back in the day. Its amazing their outfits and such. Im glad you like it.

I grew up with The Birdcage and To Wong Foo being VHS' that I watched all the time, with my mom and then on my own. They truly are the two OG films for the forward movement and normalization of queer culture in media. The fact that two of the three main leads in this one usually played macho "man's men" and were utter straight heartthrobs and they played their roles so honestly and seriously (as in not a parody, they are fucking hilarious) was SUCH a brave and effective move. When Patrick Swazey died I was definitely mourning Miss Vida. I also love seeing other queer people who didn't get the chance to watch them finally experience them. Also, I was born in '93 so I'm barely older than you.

Happy Pride Month to all in the chat and the people they love!
This movie feels different since I first time I watched it. Things have changed in ways I couldnt have guessed. It was one of the first films I saw that didn't do drag for laughs per se, bugs bunny cartoons and the like, but showed me that drag is a lifestyle choice that people can and do lose family members and friends. The pain of being shunned for something like that. It didn't seem fair.
All three actors made me believe in these characters so much that I did get a little misty eyed when she said, I love you in the end. Not all soulmates are lovers. I think you just meet magical people sometimes. People who breathe color into your life. They spark imagination and courage in us. Beautifully portrayed here. Especially Patrick Swayze, I don't know, maybe because we got more of a back story but I felt his portrayal was very deep. Her poise throughout every ordeal was inspiring to me.

Nice reactions to this fun and serious film, Sam!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽So many familiar faces I forgot were in this. There was of course RuPaul and Robin Williams. Blythe Danner (Gwyneth Paltrow's mom), Chris Penn (Sean Penn's younger brother) and the jerk cop that gets beat up. The old lady that plays the librarian at the beginning of "Ghostbusters".

This was filmed in Nebraska. I worked a summer in theatre with a guy who was on the costume crew. He said they were told not to talk to the actors. But he said Stockard Channing was really nice and talked to everyone. He said Chris Penn (The cop) was not well liked. That is what he said don't know if it is true.

The hotel scene was filmed in Omaha where I live its literally just blocks from my house we all skipped school to go to the New Tower Inn to see them film! The Train and town are also in Nebraska 😁 Unfortunately they tore down the hotel years ago now its a coffee stop and a Deluth Traiding store such a shame cause the hotel was iconic especially the pool!

😌Knew u were gonna love it. How could u not? What a fantabulous story, no? Like an after school special we should’ve had about LGBTQ+ acceptance. While silly & lighthearted…it really did have an all inclusive moral of the story that Americans (sadly) really need in 2022. I can’t believe how far we came from the ‘90’s - to have the GOP ruin everything w/their constant bigotry…in 2022! Like, when TF did Jesus say to hate everyone not white & straight?! Ugh. Anyway, don’t wanna end on a negative note - happy Pride, Sam & know u have freaking *oodles* of allies in the (boring AF😉) straight crew who love & support u 100%.😘🖖

First off, Happy Pride. Be proud of who you are no matter what anyone says. Now, I kniw I suggested it before, but I will try again. I think you should check out Team StarKid here on RUclips. Their works are musicals and there is LGBTQIA+ representation in some of their shows (some more obvious than others). That said, one that I think is really good for this month is Firebringer. I don't want to give too much away, but it does suggest anyone can be with anyone. It is a little course language wise, but the acting, comedy, messages, and songs/music is worth it. Just a fun suggestion.

I was in high school when I saw this, and this was the 90s, so not a lot of exposure to drag queen, aside from RuPaul. I thought Drag was a theatrical costume choice, for usually for comedy. I watched it mainly for the name stars, I had no idea it was a whole lifestyle. I was not expecting this, and I really enjoyed it. It was incredible, and I will always love it. Excellent choice for Pride month. Not sure if you have seen Priscilla, but I'll join the comments and say you must watch it.

Patrick used his dancer skills to bring such grace in his movements. But I think John stole the movie for me. His comedic timing was on point.
I understand why Wesley was chosen to play Noxema, because they wanted the "it" action heroes of that time to play the opposite of their usual macho characters.
I honestly wished, though, that Rupaul played Wesley's part.

I saw this in the movie theaters when it came out and I remember the contraversy around the leads. I too did not expect them to touch on those difficult topics sexual assault (the cop & group of guys) & women being battered. I was always upset that the interviews were mainly about the men dressed in drag and it the important topics in this movie.

One thing this movie illustrates well, is how a lot of homophobia really stems from plain old misogyny. Dullard (and Virgil as well to a degree) hates the drag queens because he's actually afraid that a man who is attracted to men, will treat him the way he treats women. And we saw how Dullard treats women.
