Nah. It will never be the same. Starwars is a fantasy sci fi adventure. Duna is a dense and dark sci fi.

@@enthomorf I think what he means is that Dune is (or could be) taking SW place as the leading major sci/fi franchise and studio-favored cash cow.
Personally, I think the Dune property still has a LONG way to go to achieve that, but people have definitely been warming up to it.

In the sense that Herbert wrote a fantastic book in 1965 and eventually passed the franchise rights on to people who started churning out mass-market mediocre books, yes.

There has been no spin-offs, if you are referring to the tv mini series from the Sci Fi channel I would deem them sequels as they cover the first 3 books

"10,000 years before the birth of paul atreides..." just the first sentence killed all my hope and expectations for the show. If they used "Kwisatz Haderach", or that line came from Irulan 10000 years later, narrating about the origin of Bene Gesserit it would have been fine. But if Valya said it, they already sealed the deal that this is gonna be bad writings without any respect for the original lore.

It's based on the stuff Frank's son wrote. So I can guarantee that it has no respect for the actual lore.

@bjhudson7673 I actually haven't read the book but even the movies depicted Paul as unplanned, 1 generation away from the chosen one. Even if he was the one who was prophecised, I doubt their vision would be so accurate to include his name to it. To anyone that lived 10,000 years ago he would simply be Kwisatz Haderach.
