  • Finally, I bought a few of the Terry Ludwig soft pastels. I bought mine open stock straight from their website. I know you can get them from places like Dick Blick also.

I mention an artist, Karen Margulis. I follow her on Patreon. The Lavender Field test painting was done following one of her January paint alongs. Perfect for all these purples.

Thank you for using the Ludwigs on video, I love being able to see them used.
The pastels I have are the 30half stick/15 full stick rembrant set, and the 60 Nightscape terry ludwig set. I still have a lack of light reds, light purples , and light greens. I will likely buy one more set to fill out my collection.
I love the Nightscape set a lot, it gave me all the dark colors I need which the rembrant set was kinda lacking on. The colors of the set just sitting in the box looks like a work of art itself, I mean they are just so beautiful to look at sitting in the box lol.

Thank you! I have a couple more pastel reviews coming soon you might like also. I just got a green set of Jack Richeson's to play with.

Ha, the Nightscape set is still marked as "New" on Dakota Pastels; I didn't realize it was that old already. For some reason that set really appeals to me! I guess it appealed to you too!

I was so surprised at some of my Schmincke sticks as I thought they would all be butter smooth, I found out that depending on the pigment used in the stick, this will change the hardness of each pastel stick no matter what the brand! Some of the cheaper brands use more fillers or "chalk" and this can create a softer feel like some of the mungyo sticks! Oh Karen's name sounds more like "Mar goal iss" Just an FYI. I hope to one day also afford a few TL sticks too! Have a great day!

Absolutely beautiful! And great comparison and thoughts! Thanks for sharing. I’m just getting in to soft pastels and appreciate so much the comparison of different shades and brands. I have a 48 set of Koh I Nor extra soft, a few Jackson’s, nupastels and Schmincke. I feel like I have a well rounded set for learning, and I’m Definitely not ready to splurge on Terry Ludwig yet lol but it’s nice to see where they fall in the stiffness range. And it’s never to early for me to plan my Christmas list for 2024 hahaha thanks for the great video

The Sennelier have one issue. They are extruded, not formed and sanded like Ludwig's. That means that they are cylindrical. Unless you prepare them, they aren't flat, so you get uneven application. I recommend a rectangular cross-section.

Ok so you know I have to ask -- I know you were surprised these weren't softer when you bought them. Now that you've understood that about them, how do you like the Ludwigs now? There is such a mystique around them! I'm impressed you bought open stock - I find the website very hard to browse.

I think the Ludwig pastels are meant for a rough textured underground ( a more sandpaper texture ) so that the rough textured paper has effect on the very soft pastels.....
Did you use a textured underground for this demonstration...??

You know I forget now what I used but I do have sanded paper. I just got some of that Lux Archival sanded paper, good stuff, but pricey.

I have not, but I don't use them often. That is a bummer since they are so expensive. I wonder if wearing safety goggles would be worth a try?

Have you used Fabre Castell Poly Chromos? I have their water color products. I like to keep the different mediums in the “same family”. I’m trying to “fix” my messed up water color paintings, by layering some pastels in top. Any advise? Absolutely gorgeous work! Love that Greeny Yellow color you bought in that painting. What number was that? And did you use any other greens on those trees. Sorry so long. I’m just getting started. It’s messy. And my nick name is “ Messy Mendy”. Lol. I like the sticks that aren’t as powdery I think. Thanks so much! 🖌🤗

You can absolutely layer pastels over water colors. I use Derwent Inktense as an underpainting a lot. The Greenish shade is G380. I used a couple other darker greens under it fir the trees. Probably Sennelier. If you are just starting, Rembrandt and Mungyo are not as soft and dusty, and cheaper!!

Her Huntress just ordered Jack Richerson chunky half round 50 set, 60 set of Polychromos for firm, and purple micro set of sennelier ,as well as the micro set of greens. I should be covered. My 55th Birthday is today, So my sweet husband told me to get what I wanted. I’m getting old....So I did! LOL! You have already taught me a lot. I want to try doing some alcohol washes for a back painting. Thanks for your advice. And after I get the green senellier set, I’ll see if I need the Ludwig G380! Thx, and God Bless! Messy Mendy 🥁🤗🖌

Depending on your paper you might need to use a workable fixative to give your paper a tooth or you can use a pastel ground to work over your watercolor "mess-ups" Good Luck!
