These sets didn’t just use some Orion parts. They were completely manufactured by Orion for Toshiba. That’s why when discussing Toshiba in the CRT community it’s important to know which sets were made by Toshiba and which ones weren’t. The ones manufactured in house were generally much higher quality. This also wasn’t just a Toshiba thing. By the end of the CRT era, most companies were outsourcing their CRTs to save money, including top brands like JVC.
That said, there doesn’t seem to be much wrong here - certainly nothing for a repair man to get too upset about. Universal remotes are hit or miss so I wouldn’t say that’s a knock against the TV. Second, although it’s annoying, it wasn’t unusual for consumer CRTs to not have every control available on the set itself, especially small sets. That includes Sony. My 1996 Sony KV-13M20 doesn’t even have a button on it to change inputs. I have to use the remote. And expecting more than composite on a 13” consumer set is a little unfair since this was the case for 99% consumer CRTs that size.
It looks like you just need to get the OEM remote and the Tv will be perfectly fine.

This video slandering "Toshiba" even though the TV was actually designed and manufactured by Orion is absurd. Now lots of people will just assume Toshiba sucks because this "expert" RUclips personality said so, even though their in-house large size 32"+ TVs are absolutely top notch. It's a shame, really.

@@CMskittles it was a bizarre video, and I usually like Steve’s content. But I am seeing a pattern with the other consumer CRT videos where it’s almost as if Steve talks about these consumer sets’ faults or lack of features as if they are supposed to be up to the same standard as pro monitors. The set in this video isn’t even bad. He spent most of the video just being frustrated with the aftermarket universal remote. Come on…
And yeah, I’ve had over 2 dozen CRTs of all makes and models and one of the best I ever had was a 32” curved screen Toshiba with component, made by Toshiba, not Orion. Absolutely perfect geometry, linearity and convergence with super sharp image and thick scan lines almost like an aperture grill. It was by far better than the two JVC D-Series I had and far better than the three consumer Sony sets I had.

For some reason the picture look better on Toshiba than on Orion made Durabrand or Orion branded TV. I don’t feel like it using Orion tube at all
But in the end I still want a Sony WEGA

On Toshiba TV/DVD combo players all you have to do to get the TV in to DVD mode is to just hit the play button. Also you can take an generic universal remote that has capability to hold two or more remote codes. You program one entry for the TV portion and the other for the DVD portion. Also my grandad has the 19" version of that set and he uses a generic universal remote sold under Philips name. An I was able to get into the menu and adjust the settings. To do that hit TV button on your universal remote first then hit the menu button on your remote. After that the menu will appear and once it does. Hit the DVD button or whatever you program the DVD portion under. After that you can use the arrow keys on the remote to navigate the menu and make adjustments. To exit menu just hit the TV button on the remote and that will let exit the menu. It's been awhile since I have adjusted my grandad's set but this is how I remember doing it.

I bought a 13A21 13” Toshiba CRT tv from local listing on the cheap and it seems to be working well for kids playing “retro” NES. It only has AV (mono audio) inputs on front but little thing works well for being 20+ years old. It ain’t no Sony but yeah works well enough

Do Toshiba’s crt tv tend to have broken IR receiver? I bought 2 of them and I could not find any remotes (including original ones from EBay and universal ones) that work. The remotes I’ve tried worked since their infrared light was on.
Does anyone know how to get into the service menu without using a remote ? My models are MW14F52 and MV13L3

yess yessss... toshiba is awful. definitely not worth picking up *any* of them. in fact, if you see an ad for someone giving one away.. especially the older non-flat screen ones, definitely don't pick it up. completely worthless. absolutely not worth reselling, trust me guys.

Yes, all Toshibas are so bad! I use one daily and I swear I've never once liked using it! I promise you the only reason I keep using it is so I can make sure I hate it! Don't make the same mistake I did by getting a Toshiba, it's pure pain and not worth it, believe me!

I'm working on a open source universal remote that can dump/import codes into/from a portable file via a webinterface.
I'm waiting for IR recievers to get started tho. The avarage price for a working bang & olufsen remote is 70€ and the other 80% are dead.
Something is wrong with the B&O remotes. I will not pay 70€ for a remote that might be dead in a few weeks.

I just found this exact tv in the trash and thought I would use it to play my old nes games, but like you I couldn't figure out how to get in the menu. Maybe I will get rid of it and find a better one.

I got that CRT at a swap meat for $20. I opened it up and no dust. All you do is press the channel buttons in the front to get to Game, Line, DVD, channel 3 ect.. Ive been playing my PS2 on it and watched Night of the Living Dead the other night. Works for me, I have no remote either but a CRT that small I'm sure it was ment for kids or just a budget buy at the stores.

Will definitely watch but fyi, looking to my left I see the exact model Toshiba as in the thumbnail, found in our condo recycling which was great as I had only a big bulky 21 inch in my closet (don't really have the room to display or hook up) a perfect solution for all my retro consoles but sadly didn't come with a remote and indeed any universal or programable remotes I had (about a dozen) none gave me access to the tuning menu for image but luckily the following month in the same electronics recycling bin I found not one but TWO excellent condition and fully working Harmony remotes and how pleased I was to find once the right code was entered it was a fully compatible remote including all the image tuning menu functions and I tweaked it to a much superior display and am now enjoying it fully, it was all free so I reall y cannot complain.

Sometimes those cheap Chinese remotes come pre programmed for multiple devices to cut costs, might be worth pulling the batteries and unplugging everything to start fresh, maybe then it’ll let you back in the menu
Also I had this tv as a teenager but it had a vhs player instead of dvd, and it was a great set for my bedroom. I would love to find one again. Always had the remote though so no headaches like this

A couple of rules of thumb with remotes--put in fresh batteries, not randos you find that you've used for something before, and don't press any extra or repeated buttons since there's no telling how that will be interpreted. And clean off the IR sensors on the remote and TV.

STEVE...Or anyone that needs the remote for this CRT "MD13Q42" . The Remote that works has a BLACK face and Grey body. It says DC-sB2 On the remote. All of the buttons for the DVD work and the menu functions of the TV. This Toshiba is sitting right in front of me behind my monitors watching Spaceballs :) haha. Some of the remotes are universal as you already know but this one is proper :) Just walked into the garage and realized I now have two and remembered seeing this video. I just ordered one off Ebay thinking I didn't have one (>_o) I would love to attempt RBG/S-video on this as there's allot of space in the back as well.

You darn Toshiba hater!!!! 😂😅… no worries! I have this same TV but the VHS version and absolutely love it. Also have a 14” and 20” Toshiba flat screens both with built in DVD players and they have always been so great! I’ve always been really impressed with them minus not having enough input options

Seems like a lot of people own this tv, which is no surprise I have see thing thing more than any other CRT in my life and its what you call painfully average which also seems like something this group of people are going to take personally, being unable to separate their identity from the physical objects they own I see; if someone doesn't like something you like or possess its not an insult right?
Plus, this is a livestream never been frustrated at something before? Steve is a professional CRT repair man, not media presenter, have a little empathy. 🤣🤣

I usually love the content on this channel but I've got to say I'm not a huge fan of the general negativity in this video. Most of your complaints had more to do with the janky 3rd party remote than the set itself, seems a bit unfair to me. I found a similar model MD13N1R on the curb the other day and with a generic programmable remote using code 0015 all the functions of the TV and DVD player work just fine for what it's worth. That being said, keep up the good work generally and I hope your kid is doing well.

I always respected Toshiba and there products. But for some reason, I think they cut themselves short on being great. I mean, there good and reliable , But I just can't seem to see them trying to outdo themselves on being the greatest compared to Sony or Panasonic Steve. 8^)
