  • Nigeria is in the grip of a kidnapping epidemic. Thousands of Nigerians have fallen victim, and millions of dollars in ransoms have been paid.
But the Intelligence Response Team, led by Abba Kyari - nicknamed “Nigeria’s Super Cop” - are taking the fight to the kidnappers. Is the unit the solution to the Nigeria’s kidnap crisis?
BBC Africa’s Kunle Falayi has been given exclusive access to the unit.

I was kidnapped 01 November, 2020 in the southern part of Nigeria. it's not an experience i wish for my enemy. Stayed 5 days in the bush without food or water, all chained up, beaten like a dog until a ransom was paid. Nigeria government need to do something about this. Thank you BBC for this investigation and informing viewers. I cant get the trauma of my head.

In 2019 my dad who is a Sudanese businessman was in Nigeria he’s owned a shipping company for 15 years in Nigeria but he was coming from the north when bandits tried to kidnap him but what they didn’t know is that my father is allowed to carry. My father and his 2 security men shot 3 of those robbers dead on the spot when my dad went to court the case was dismissed because those Hausa men he shot were known to police and known kidnappers and robbers. Until this day my family get threats from different Hausas online and by mail but we welcome them because me and my brothers and sister are all allowed to carry 😀😃😂 they will go back north in a casket.

The fact that the Northerners have been in leadership for so long but there is still this level of poverty in the Northern states is appalling. Create jobs, fund the policemen and stop corruption. God please help our country to do the right men. How can a dedicated policeman die in office but the widow and her children are suffering? Very sad indeed

Nigeria must take care of its police and military heroes who die in the course of duty. And Nigeria has to do this in a way to make sure every Nigerian citizen sees it, and knows it. This has been an eye opener. And Kunle's documentary should be an example of real journalism, not like those people that sit in air-conditioned office in black suits talking about things they don't know. Instead of them to follow the story to wherever it may lead, while uncovering the truth in the process.

Has Nigeria asked for her help from other African nations?
