  • BBC Africa Eye goes undercover to expose an ineffective and corrupt pension system in Nigeria, which leaves some elderly people sick and penniless, yet grants some politicians inflated retirement packages.
Reporter Yemisi Adegoke travels to Cross River State to meet ‘Ghost Pensioners’ - elderly people whom the state declared dead and deprived of their pensions. Some of whom are forced to rely on financial support from their relatives and are subjected to dehumanising treatment from the state officials for petitioning for their pensions to be reinstated.

My mother spent 35 years in service and she hasn’t been paid a dime. I can only imagine the level of suffering if I’m unable to support her. My friends dad died on his way to Abuja to go and collect his retirement funds. I have a lot of sad tales to share from Nigeria. Breaks my heart watching this video 💔💔💔

Its interesting how we like to apportion all the blame to one strata of social actors. The truth is, ordinary average people working in various jobs are using their positions to extort money from their fellow citizens. Its a systemic societal problem. From university registration clerks to lecturers.... wanting bribes for admissions or grades..
Traffic wardens... want bribe to let cars pass.
Bank loan officer... wants a bribe before approving a legitimate loan.
Market touts and area boys... want a pay off "tax" before you enter the market or cross the road
The girl a guy wants to date must first collect something before giving her attention...
Even churches want payment for prayers...
Straight forward job application is a myth....you must someone who knows someone...
No business contract without paying a cut or having a godfather.
My point is simple corruption is a general social plague that just gets worse as people become more powerful. Beyond politicians we must all examine ourselves and the seemingly "small" ways we contribute to corruption everyday.

I don't know what the law stipulates, but from viewing broadcast from TB Josha's, Emmanuel TV, I saw this issue occuring over and over again, and it seemed to me that Nigera has not addressed this issue at a legal level. It is twenty five years now since I critically started thinking about us Africans and the conclusion I always make is that we cannot govern ourselves. From Cairo to Johannesburg stories are just the same. Lack of meaningful leadership. African politicians are hugely paid and await hefty pensions after their therms leaving behind devastated people and their families. Hardly do they deliver. The big question is, what is wrong with us?
