- Thanks to Bond Group for the chance to drive this 1966 Triumph TR4A. This affordable British sports car sports a 2.1L inline 4 cylinder engine mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox. It of course drives the rear wheels and leaves no filter between road and driver.

#RespectTheDrive #Triumph #TR4A - Авто/Мото
i had a Tr3 for years and its a really great drive, no distractions. the amount of positive attention is also pretty crazy
I'd love to be a passenger in this! Tedward is awesome!
The TR4A cars initially came with Zenith Stromberg carburetors, but near the end of production the carburetors were switched backed to SU’s. This video brings back a lot of memories especially with all the cowl shake and steering wheel moving around going over bumps. The only thing this day dream is missing is feeling the wire wheels flexing going around hard turns. Always respect the drive.
Wire wheels flexing in the corners, that sounds just slightly less freaky than knock-off hubs. What kind of sensation was that next to basic suspension compression?
True New England tough guy! Top down in the winter! It always kills me when Matt F and Zak are in their giant puffy winter jackets in a non-convertible car, with the windows up, because its 59 degrees in the canyons!!
It’s okay for people to be cold.
I live in rural northwest Connecticut where it can get brutally cold, especially with the windchills. It’s not unusual to see people jogging in shorts and t-shirts in the dead of winter. I’m not sure if that means someone is a “tough New Englander”, or if it means they’re insane.
I love little lightweight loud cars like these.
The noise this thing makes is just mmmhhh
I've always been impressed with how Triumph was able to exist and develop their cars for as long as they did on a budget that was most likely less than GM spent on the Corvette's interior in that era.
Also, it's interesting how offset the steerimg wheel is from the pedals.
My first car was a TR250, and I very much miss it!
Tedward, Thank You sooo much for that trip down memory lane! My second car was a 64 TR4. Bought it in 74 when I just turned 19. It too had the steering shaft rattle and the window rattle as you went over bumps...but what a fun car! It also had the weak 3rd gear syncro! LOL This video brought back many great memories for me! Thanks again!!!!!
Had a 74 Jensen Healey for a while. That was also fun 4 cylinder British roadster! Also, you're right, people just tend to love these types of cars.
That little car looks good and sounds great!
Engine mounted way back, mostly behind the front axle👍
I believe those are minilite wheels. 205 section tires that’s a lot of rubber for such a small car. Love your videos by the way.
Wow this car looks like new!
You are spot on about these cars being easy to work on. Bought a Triumph GT6 10 years ago as my first car. It provides plenty of learning experiences for a novice wrencher, but parts are generally cheap and attainable and most mechanical components are very accessible. Couldn’t be happier with it
There’s a guy at my college who has a TR4 that he takes out when the weather is good. makes my miata look like an SUV when I park next to it. Nearing the end of the spring semester last year, he would come with it with the top down every day, park it with the top off, just enjoying and basking in sunny new england glory. I’ll miss seeing that little guy when I graduate.
I love those roads … I kinda miss commuting on them… lots of cops on the Reservior road… pulled over a few times in my AMG and 993 TT 😮
It’s a very handsome car indeed. I prefer the looks over the TR6
That 997 was in Carmon Red...I have one just like it. I've never seen another one in the wild!
Great color
Why don't they build such beautiful cars anymore?
That dash is better than a Gin Rickey and a cucumber sandwich for breakfast. 🇬🇧
Tedward, when are you going to get your hands on an early-60’s Lotus Elan? That would be an awesome drive!
I love the styling of just about any Triumph (Michelotti) and especially the Italia which to me looks like a baby Maserati. There is a guy in the NJ/E. PA area that my partner and I see at Carlisle Imports or the Brits on the Beach in Ocean Grove. I just stand around drooling at the Italia. But after seeing your video the engine is pretty non-dramatic compared to say our Fiat Spider (which is laid up long story) where the little twin cam really sings. But this Tr4A is so much sweeter than an MGB in every way. Thanks Ted: always something to learn. Ps. I hope your drama abated. My week was filled with it including a tense Department meeting. ThankGod for weekends, lol.❤
Seriously appreciated!
I believe your referencing Dave Hutchison's red TR Italia. His Italia and a dark blue/tan interior combo are often shown & seen together at PA and Watkins Glen's Vintage Grand Prix weekend. @marial8235
@@LibertyWines I think you may be right. I remember the lovely tan interior. Never saw him near the car though. I’ve thought of getting a Tr and emulate an Italia.
Great video, as per usual. You've summed up the attraction of small sports cars perfectly. I used to drive my Caterham 7 with the top down most of the time, all year round, despite British weather being extremely variable one minute to the next. 😁 Driving "raw" cars without any power steering, ABS, ESP or traction control and little regard for NVH levels, makes driving such a visceral experience, and makes people etter drivers too.
Either that speedo is over reading or that is one very healthy TR4! It certainly sounded it, and they like the cold weather 😊
Def looks way over
Probably in KM/HR.
@@joeimbesi5361 Literally says MPH on the gauge
Just wow 🤩 and Next to a Triumph America, perfect combo.
I’m 32 and even in my 20’s I would’ve been in love with this car anyways. I had enough Modern Vehicles, now I need to make $$$ to afford some “immaculate classics” 🇬🇧
Beautiful car...
Keep up the good work. Enjoy every video you've put together! Side question - did you shoot this episode at the old Polaroid facility?
The fact that has more power than my 94 4spd Tercel is hilarious. Also really enjoyed the motorsports club visit a couple weeks ago :)
It was awesome to hang out and talk with everyone
The one to really have is the TR4A IRS (independent rear suspension) :)
Mentioned in the video
You can afford to buy, affording to own and maintain is another question.
Rugged little sports cars, absolutely suited to blasting around British "B" roads on a crisp, bright day. Shoddily built, but yet solidly built- you still see plenty of these about over here. Plenty of crusty ones, but quite a few nicely restored examples about now too..
You're a braver man than me, Tom. You would _not_ catch me taking a TR4a on _any_ kinda highway. Not with every car on the road being bigger and heavier than it.
This is big in comparison to some of the cars I’ve driven out there 😂
I had 3 Weber 40dcoe on my tr6. Like fuel injection. 👍
That stripe across the bonnet was indigenous to the Triumph 250, not the TR4. Love the Weber carburetors, also not stock, should be SUs Fun cars, for sure.
The bonnet stripes were unfortunate on the TR250 and unforgiveable on a TR4.
Yep, this is one of my dream cars. Sure Bugatti’s, Ferrari’s, and Lambos are fun in their own way, but it doesn’t compare to this.
Ted, on the subject of old English cars, have you driven a Lotus Elan or Europa? Those are two cars that have a level of handling that’s beyond belief.
I think the best word to describe it is “plucky.”
I'm pretty sure the horsepower is boosted beyond 100bhp with the Webers and perhaps the exhaust upgrade.
Nice landscape, where is this? Overall outstanding presentation, I really enjoyed it
I live in the area so it's mainly Waltham Lexington Concord Lincoln. Lots of nice backroads.
@@Oobido thank you
When will you drive a Spitfire? But again a cool video!
Subjective but this TR looks original spec except for the wheels, which detract from the overall appearance imo a set of period Ro-Styles would be a more logical choice.
My first car was a Vitesse convertible with a 2.5 six on twin SU's, swapped from a 2500 Estate.
Oooooo driving our dads cars. Can you drive an Jag X-type 6spd for me then?
I wonder if I would fit in it...
The gauges are cool looking, but the gauges are a little confused.
nice hat
Thank you. It's warm
Hey what I work on route 2
This Tedward TR4A review is bought to you by: Lucas. Because gentlemen don't drive after dark!
Will you ever get the chance to drive a Triumph Spitfire?
I'm sure one will fall into my lap soon
My dad has a TR6, and it was frightening to drive ! You really feel like you're in a soap box car. Everything is shaky, it's like the drivetrain is made of wood
I think the TR6 feels less complete than the TR4. I was a lot less confident in the 6 haha
@@TedwardDrivesYeah your video almost makes me want one haha
Bread
butter
My dad has a 1 n we can't find a trans for it
Is Triumph a bike company now
Have a friend who has one in red. They are great cars. That engine sounds like a sports cam and with dual Webers it probably is better than stock horsepower and torque.
P.S. It is worth changing from the old hood latch system to new gas struts. I did on my MGB for the same reason.
P.S. Get em while you can cause the prices on these old Brits are going up.
Funny how your parents always owned the cars you drive......
Gourjis
ُThat color makes it look just like a frog!
🐸
que basura! 😐
English sport cars are nothing but grief
i brought my car to a car show a few weeks ago and i saw a TR4A there in this same green color.
