  • Engine No. 9 is the last surviving piece of Mt. Tamalpais’s Railway, and the "Friends of No. 9" has just begun restoration of the 99-year old steam engine.
Fred Runner makes his living as a TV & film sound mixer, recording the voices of people standing before cameras and bright lights. A short list of his credits include: The Right Stuff, Mrs. Doubtfire, Basic Instinct, Patch Adams, Total Recall, Batman Begins, the Sundance Festival favorite, Sorry To Bother You, and more recently, Top Gun II.
In 2009, Fred became a published author. His book, Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railway, is a pictorial history of the steam trains and the twisting route they once climbed to the top of Mt. Tamalpais. Twenty years of research went into the book and Bill Provines, the last living employee of the railroad, called it “a super job".
Fred is also the historian of the 116-year-old West Point Inn, the only surviving building of the railway, and president of “Friends of No. 9” a community supported nonprofit that bought engine No. 9 in a do-or-die auction.

And this also illustrates the joy and excitement of historical research, preservation and restoration. I was lucky enough to have met Roy Graves and Ted Wurm (having a copy of their book, autographed by both authors) and many years ago knew Roy's son Al Graves. From the other side, back in the early 1970s, when racing bicycles, I also knew Joe Breeze -- which illustrates that there are only 500 people in the world and they will all pass through our lives at one time or another. This is an exceptional project and though I no longer live in the Bay Area (or California), I wish you well on your project and have great respect for your efforts!
