Most of all subarus are prone to head gasket leaks
Thankfully this one was just done with the timing belt.
That's awesome!!
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Randy great deal man.. Over here in Europe we love Outback and Forester (a bigger version of this but still smaller than an up-size US - SUV) When are working great thanks to AWD system are very good vehicles all /year around for different adventure purposes fishing, kayak, in summer / going to ski resorts for snowboarding in winter they are very versatile just like Audi A6 all-road you had one of those too if i remember correctly.. So if your son would take it for him would be a very capable first car.. Anyway i can't wait to see what you will do to it, over here for example at some car meetings where Subaru club vehicles owners & fans still love to do on outback different tricks or mods even fully-fitted with a rally sourced WRX - engine swap and raised power a bit also height of the car just a bit with off-road shocks prepped to fit WRC - WRX rally gravel tires and roof-rack on top with some extra yellow Hella-lights on roof, extra spare wheel, a gas canister, shovel +a pair of max-trax stuck-recovery ramps ready for cool & fun trail adventures with friends..
Duh! He mentioned that.
Every make of car has problems but if you take care of any car and keep up with regular maintenance then any car can be a decent good reliable car
I think Nick would love this car, especially because all of the expensive parts of owning a Subaru have been taken care of, which (according to the people that have worked on my Forester) would make that car a great car for another 10 years at least. And being a 24-year-old, I still think wagons are cool, I grew up in the back of a 90's Ford Falcon wagon, which is the reason I'm into cars today. I'm sure he'll be really appreciative with this car! So I'm voting give it to Nick. And its a great deal since there is a few for sale with around that mileage for way more than you paid for it (between 4-6k).
The first car I shared with my sisters was a station wagon. A 1983 Crown Victoria Country Squire station wagon. 😊
Give it to Nick would be a great 1st car!
Should give Nick the Cadillac.
$575 is still a good deal even if the head gasket is bad. At least in Oregon. Once you fix the head gaskets right, they are good to go.
Hahaha what head gasket do you run all my co workers with the old wrx rs and turbo version always be blowing head gasket and it's Toyota to the rescue
It’s not an off road car. Far from it. It is, however an outstanding snow car! Since those head gaskets and timing belt have been done it should be troublefree. Those were great cars!
Hey Randy, add tint to the car. It will change the look of it being a wagon. I think Nick will like it more and appreciate a vehicle with space. Thanks for all the awesome videos.
Give it to Nick. It looks great. He can go camping in it.
Heck of a score Randy I'll bet that Outback will run another 200k miles with routine maintenance
If your definition of routine maintenance includes transmission and engine replacements every 80-100K miles.
Randy!!!! Buying and driving home are epic videos. Can’t wait to see if you make it!!
That's an awesome car. Maybe if you get Nick to help clean it up and you explain to him how it's an awesome car with the hatchback and all-wheel drive etc et cetera. While you guys are cleaning it up, you may grow to like it, I definitely feel that's a keeper.
The owner passed and the didn’t have anyone to leave it to or the person settling the estate just wanted money
I think the previous owner departed this world.
I second this. 😊
That’s what I’m thinking also!
It was probably their estate wagon
Or their kids took the keys away, or they went into assisted living, or won the lottery.
Or fell in love with a bar girl in Bangkok and stayed over there supporting her family.
Some explanations are a sad ending, some are a happy endings of various kinds.
that's what i think, or they traded it in for something else
Damn, what a Score!!! The problematic stuff already done too...This would make a great inexpensive one for Nick for sure. My Stepson gets his license the end of August. I bought him a 236K 07 Camry Le that I should have less than 2k in with plates and repairs for him. One of these would have been my 2nd choice because they are just solid vehicles. Did you catch that it was built in Indiana as well
Hey randy so about the Subaru my mom had two she past them on to my brother and I drove them in to the ground and when it comes to snow the awd system is great in the rain great so for a first car for a kid it's great and I think nick will like it
Let Nick have it for a year or two and prove he's a good driver. If something happens to it you're only out $600. It's a great car for a kid
I own a 2003 LL Bean edition. Same color, leather interior. Mine has the 6 cylinder in it. 212 thousand miles and going strong. I use it as around town grocery getter. BTW my wife and then my daughter drove the heck out of this car before they handed Back Down to me.
My granddaughter drove her 1999 from high school thu college has close to 300000 miles and is still a great car
My old boss gave his son this same car he drove through college now he has a brand new truck he sold the car to a friend of mine and my friend drove for awhile and said it did go fast .
Great car for Nick looks like a great buy Randy
Great for Nick to learn how to replace head gaskets.
Randy, so 98-01 on the non turbo engines subaru used a graphite coated single layer head gasket and they had issues. They revised the gasket with a multi layer steel gasket and it was better. These days it doesnt really happen no matter what facebook says plus its even more rare on the turbo motors
I think you found nick an awesome first car. A few dings and scrapes is fine for a first car. Seems to be awesome once the AC is fixed. Also If you have it. PLEASE. Play doctor Dre I need a doctor on that stereo system and make a video with it and some classic rock too lol that would be amazing
Roll a tennis ball on inside of fender to get dent out and I agree it probably was an older person car . Great buy the car fax report really helped
Another great acquisition by Randy for that little $$$...Well done ✔️....car looks straight and easy to drive...not so sure if Nick want to have a go at it..alhahaha 🎉😂
That little roof spoiler on the hatch isn't a spoiler but a rear window diffuser. It's designed to speed air over the rear window. It helps keep the dust and snow from building up on the rear window. It works really well for snow. And finding one with the cargo cover for the rear is a score in of itself.
Time to add some tiny to windows😅😅😅
Im only 3 minutes in -- provided the transmission works fine, this has Nick all over it! Safe, stylish reliable and versatile! A perfect first car for anyone with all that preventative matainance done! I grew up with this generation subaru .. my parents started with a 98 Legacy GT Wagon, and a 98 Forester. From there we had an 03 and 05 Forester, and an 03 Legacy GT sedan. They were all awesome cars!
That was a great find randy. I loved it when you did a walkaround on it. Hopefully we see the fire wagon at some point. Love seeing the old will it make hole type of videos! Keep it up! And didn’t you have a 90’s one that broke too, would be perfect for Nick though n
That dent in the fender should pbr right out of there great buy
My wife had a 93 Subaru Legacy back in the 90’s that we really loved. In 2019 we bought a new 2019 Subaru Outback Premium. I ended up buying a used Subaru Legacy for a commuter car. Last year we traded in the 2019 Outback and bought a new Subaru Forester Sport. We’ve had very good luck with Subaru and have had absolutely no issues so far with Subaru. My Legacy gets around 38 miles per gallon. As a young kid, I don’t think Nick we be all that thrilled with driving a station wagon and I understand his thoughts, but I’m quite sure that it’d make him a great first car to get used to the driving world.
My son first car was an old Ford station wagon. He loved it! He could put a lot of kids into it!
I agree with you Randy, perfect first car for your son, had one here in Australia for 15 years, quality build, plenty of performance and all wheel drive for handling and safety, only sold it for the new model. They still look classy after all these years with that paint colour, you basically stole it 👍
Love these type of videos , keep em coming 🎉🎉
These buy em and drive them home videos is what got me hooked to your channel!!!
Many years ago I had a 1990 Subaru Outback wagon. AWD was an option back then and it had it. It was amazing in New England winters!
I only got rid of it when the rust took over. Fabulous design those Subie’s!
Great video! I've always enjoyed that style of Subaru Outback!
i dont think i see you this excited about buying these cars, unless you drive them home like this. thats why we all miss having you do this all the time!!!!!!
Hi Randy, greetings from Finland. Haven't watched your videos so regularly, but when I saw the title, had to watch this. I just bought a 2011 Outback few weeks ago with 160000 miles (translated from km), it has a 2.5 CVT and it feels so solid. It has never had any suspension work, and my regular mechanic went it through and couldn't find any suspension play from anywhere though really tried with a big crowbar. Impressive. It feels like it's gonna last forever, if I just maintain it regularly. I guessed instantly that your Outback will be just fine, because it was with relatively low mileage. Thanks for your videos, good content !
This Outback would be a great first car for Nick. Fast enough to get out of it's own way but not get in trouble with and practical.
Notorious for rust underneath, if it's reasonably clean underneath, that'll make a solid flip
As always, I enjoy your videos, and I have learned a lot my son just bought a 1991 Chevy S 10 down by Tennessee and Georgia line we’re on our way home right now 600 miles one way. And he has no AC I drove it probably 200 miles that thing runs excellent by the way he’s only 17. Sure makes me as a dad proud.
My 2000 legacy gt wagon has over 320k miles, doesn’t leak oil! The wind noise from the front windows, is from behind the mirror area. To fix it, roll the window down and use some pliers/channel locks to squeeze the window channel back tight on the 3-4inch spot behind the mirror.
Great car Randy! You scored on that one!
I guess it remains to be seen if Nick would like it or not. You never know what's cool and what isn't with kids these days.
I would drive the hell out of that car until the wheels fall off! All day, any day!! I like it!
It will be interesting to see it up on the lift, and if the A/C comes back around with a new belt.
Looking forward to the next video on it.
You should up-trim it to limited/ cold weather package, super easy to do as it’s already wired up etc for it. Heated windshield, heated mirrors, heated seats, and rear lsd. Don’t forget to check the door jambs near the dog legs for rust. Could also toss in the autodim/ compass rear view. Parts are affordable and plenty. The wind noise usually is the mirror molding or the window door seal. Also, 80mph @ 3k ish isn’t high, it’s normal as outback runs a 4.44 final drive live in that rpm range. (First time here btw) I own an 02 ob sedan & 04lgt sedan, love them both
Randy, some tips on the Subaru. If it ever needs towing it needs to be Flatbed towed or the driveline will be damaged. This generation is still the all time all wheel drive, which is excellent as less electrical issues. Also if you need to replace tires, you need to either change in pairs or 4 at a time. 4 is the recommended per the manufacturer. Also after you get the AC belt done run some AC leak detector through the system. Reason being where the lines join at the mounting block the O-rings tend to dry out and crack there. My 2001 Outback had this issue. I put new O-rings on the fittings, ran a vacuum compressor to evacuate the air in the system. Then added the Pag oil and the freon. The car has had cold air conditioning since then.
Yes to the audio system video
Hell yeah! He could have a lot of fun with that wagon 😏 as long as he doesn't look at it like a old person's car lol
Looking forward to the old school stereo setup. Hopefully the neighbors won't complain 😊
Pretty good deal as long as the gaskets and timing belt has been replaced. Head gaskets being the main issues these had. My wife has one that has the gasket issue and I seen where theres a better replacement gasket kit for these. Unfortunately hers has the 3.0 and from what ive seen the engine has to come out. Good find Randy!
Those Vega's are gonna go hard on some 90s rap. Nice setup! I'd love to see a video of it with you and Mike
I think it would be a great car for Nick. Knowing all the work already done to it can let you feel secured that he is driving a reliable vehicle. I hope he likes it.
I got a kick out of this vid,you literally drove thru my neighborhood ! Love the Subaru ,always been a fan of those ,helluva deal.
I used to own the same car but 5 speed, when I bought it I did all the same service items (top end service) and a steering rack and drove it cross country. It was a good car for what it was. Not great on gas but it sure was a great adventure car. The new owner loves it too.
That could be a great idea for giving it to nick. And thanks so much for posting a video right now. Kinda need something to watch to get my mind on something else. We just had to put our old dog down today and it is super hard.
Yup this was a massive score! Full top of engine service plus great tires. This would be a safe and great car for Nick for sure! But if he doesn't like it you could keep it for a while Randy. Loved the video looking forward to the next!👍
Dr.dre and the chronic was excellent on those types of speakers...it definitely made your heart pop out ...I rmbr those days...great times man...lol
I would like to see your stereo. That's my hobby, I have 5 systems and 15 turntables.
Great deal Randy I think that would be a great car for Nick. Can’t wait to see the more videos on this car because I’m actually looking for one of these myself now. Love you video keep up the great work brother.
Sleeperdude just bought one like that. He paid 2K. You got a amazing deal. Nick will love it.
Give this to Nick. Perfect car for him!
It’s a traveling bedroom. Nick can camp out in it, he’ll love it!
Man Randy you always score these good buys!
Love your videos

Great first car! I saw this come up on my page and I had to watch it! Ihada green 2003 for my first car and it got me through college before blowing it's headgasket. Had plans for it, but ended up selling it for a more cost efficient car. Also the spare should be under that foam cover. Love the videos!
Nice score Randy. The car is doing well 😎😎👍👍
Congratulations on your win. I always liked Subi wagons. If you decide to give it to Nick as a first car, I think he would be on the moon with happiness!
Keep up your good work!
Great car for Nick. Let him clean and repair
G'day Randy, the Subaru AWD is interesting. It varies the ratio from true 4WD 50/50 on dirt or snow to almost FWD 90/10 on bitumen. Great to watch a drive-it-home video again.
Hell yeah! You know us Hoosiers love our bass 😂 excited to see more
Tint the windows, put subwoofers in the back, and find him some sandals to wear✌😅 every Subaru owner I have ever seen had sandals on or they worked for the post office
Don’t forget to purchase a vape!
I Had 2 of these, never had a problem. great vehicle in all weather conditions.
My first car was a much newer small SUV, but I would’ve taken that Outback in a heartbeat. Very comfortable and spacious cars. Just some tint on the windows and it doesn’t look half bad for how old it is.
Nothing like a old time accustic old time stereo they have a sound like no other and you hear everylil ding and bell chimes that you should ..so congrats on your system to be would love to hear it
I found that Sabarus get around the "Wagons are not cool" that so many others get hit with. They can go offroad, but not like a truck can. More like a rough country road kind of thing. They are amazing in snow. Just watch for rust. If you see any (even tiny spots), fix it before it gets a chance to start spreading. Get it on the lift and check under it. Preemptive rust treatment isn't a bad idea on one this old (and not an undercoat. A real rust inhibitor.)
"Now that the party is jumpin, with the bass kicked in and the Vega's are pumpin" yeah may be vanilla ice but looking forward to the old school audio setup! Another smashing video Randy, thankyou!!
That subuaro has old lady written all over it 🤠
As far as i know my brother's going to give his 2006 Legacy Wagon to his oldest child to learn to drive on, bought it new and fanatically serviced. Provided you take care of these cars they can be a good first car.
I am 22 and currently drive a 1995 Volvo 850 saloon with the 2.5 5 cylinder, absolutely beautiful car, though every time I drive it I wish it was the estate version! Love that quirky lil Subaru and would daily that no issue! 😂
Getting my first car from family for a cool $500, it was a Ford Escort Wagon. Never saw these kind of wagons as old folks vehicles. Loved having the space without sacrificing much on gas mileage. Nick would likely enjoy the Subaru.
I like these cars. I kinda want to get a copart membership and see if I can buy it when you're done. Great job!
Can't wait to here your stereo system
Hey Randy awesome video I heard you were asking how many horsepower the Subaru has. The 4 cylinder is a 2.5 liter with 165 horsepower. But if it's a 6 cylinder it has the 3.0 liter with 212 horsepower. Keep up the great content as well.
It's possible that this was owned by an older driver, who may have had to give up driving and the family got rid of it. But it's a great and safe first car for Nick.
Definitely a score ! I know the feeling, the deal is the awesome feeling.. it’s even just a great grocery getter / parts runner.. it’s nice not to care about a vehicle getting a few small dents or scratches . I drive Subaru’s in the winter, they are snow machines with say new directional snow tires. 2ft deep is nothing for them . Maybe see if Nick will try it out for a week..see if he likes it. Or winter vehicle for the safety aspect.
yes those subi's are known for head gaskets and trans problems but that one should be good to go since it's had all that maintenance done to it Nick should love it and they do make a lift kit for it and you can run a set 31" to 33" tires on it
Owned a 05 outback xt... in Michigan's upper peninsula and once I put winter tires on it it handled really well in the winter I don't buy into the whole all seasons equals all seasons... yea the awd system was phenomenal... good luck with it
That is a great car for a first car. Reliable and easy to work on. I've had 2, my current one is identical to that one. My last one I sold with 315,000 miles and it was still running perfectly
That year Outback is awesome. I had a friend who had over 220 K before someone else totaled for him. He replaced the transmission at 200 K and never needed to replace the head gaskets. However I have another friend who had a Forester of the same vintage and the head gaskets needed to be replaced at 80K.
An an ambassador I approve lol. Love the wagon legacy line. Currently own a 08 outback manual but use to have a 96 legacy wagon manual, 99 legacy wagon, 05 baja. The wind noise is probably the rubber split on the window at the window, really common same for ac compressors
Would be a dream to find one like that for that price to put the wife in lol
I’m 22. And absolutely love those. I would use it to kick start my dream of traveling
Yes bring back the old throw back fun stuff I miss them days
I find things like this far more exciting than a newer car.
Nothing beats a old time accustic old time sterio system
Probably a good deal from the looks of the one side. 👍🏾. Man I miss the auctions! Have a great time out there!
I would've killed for something like this as a first car! That's a bargain, Randy!! I love older Subarus. I'm a sucker for the wagons.
That’s a keeper head gasket already done 😎
Give the headlight a bang with your side fist. That's a steel for $500 you done very well keeper.
subis are good cars prone to issues but its like any car..nick would love it
I love this Subaru! Especially with all that work already done. It would be a great car for Nick. Love old school stereo systems.
you announced it is for sale one week ago, now you are buying it, Great video though, I was waiting for it!
I realized that, too.... Was really hoping he would give it to nick.
I love the little wagon, you done good!
Great deal, car and video😀🔥
I almost forgot, he wouldn’t stop saying he couldn’t wait until the winter comes because he heard the outback was like a little army tank in the snow! Poor guy, I guess he’ll never know
