It’s great that the family is still involved. Great origin story. If only they’d do something about the salt… 😂 I hope there are more videos like this.
I was literally thinking about what video essay channels we have that focus on SA businesses just last week, and then yours popped up. I feel like I've struck gold! This was fascinating. Thank you, and keep up the great work. 🙏❤
6:33 I've lived in Botswana my whole life and just to clarify Chicken Licken did open before 2008. I was born in 1997, Im not sure where the first location opened up but for the the longest time I remember a Chicken Licken restaurant being at BBS Mall in the capital, Gaborone.
I really wonder how they have been able to present themselves as a halal centric brand. It's even difficult to try to open or buy a franchise without a Muslim partner. Thanks for this channel Chief very - company man but proudly South African. Super proud. I hope students take this opportunity to start doing assignments on ZA company's your channel is such a beautiful place to start. I can't wait for you to cover companies like Sephako, Gijima and Imperial.😅
Thanks so much for tuning in and your kind words. I've just added those companies to the list of companies I'm going to cover 2025, appreciate the suggestions..
6:37 it wasn’t the first store in Botswana, I remember having it here in 1995/6. It’s highly successful here, owned by an Indian family. They even have a “secret” menu in case people didn’t know. Hope this adds to your story, keep it up
I'm from Botswana and my parents are friends with the daughter of the franchiser who brought Chicken Licken to Botswana. I'm not sure the exact year as I was a baby/toddler at the time but I'm pretty certain it was in the mid 90s.
sup man, thanks for clarifying that up, you actually the 3d person from Botswana to mention that it was somewhere in the 90's Chicken Licken opened in Botswana so there is definitely some truth to this. Thanks for tuning in.
If I can plead one thing to Chicken Licken, it would be: Ease down on the salt. Damn... I literally stop buying anything Chicken Licken because of that. Great informative video btw👌.
Growing up in the 90s, Chicken Licken was the lowest cost fast food meal I could afford and loved it, the flavor is like non other with that soul fire sauce! and still today love them over KFC anytime!!! Chicken Licken is the only chicken I prefer even a day after coz the flavor just gets better!! 🔥🔥🔥 that survey needs to be rechecked! Love your content bro✌
Hi there, thanks so much for watching, glad you are enjoying the content. The results of the survey puzzle me myself but it definitely is not an accurate representation
My buddy and I got ten bucks pocket money a month back in the 90's. A ticket to the latest movie at Southgate Shopping centre cost R5...we would spend the other R5 on the arcade games. One day we were both hungry and walked around the food court in the mall and saw a Chicken Licken Joes Pie for R2.50....I loved those pies
Chicken licken is closing down a lot of stores . It has been left behind in the dust by KFC which is 4 times bigger than Chicken Licken at 1000 stores, and now there is Hungry Lion which is cheaper and offers better food that is bigger too. And go taste Chicken licken, it ridicously salty.
"In 1985 the cost of a franchise was R3000 plus Mr George would help the franchisee with R15000 for equipment and other nessesities; Today a franchise sets you back between R5000 000 and R7000 000 ...There is No Doubt that Chicken Licken does taste better / developed a unique chilli-sauce that complements the way chicken licken is made / fried and there is No Doubt now that his Daughter is behind the steering wheel won't be long before KFC sees FLAMES!
You know, we've been having breakfast there since I was a child. Very curious about Wimpy. It survived many years. Please can you write about them too?
Not sure about Namibia, but in Swaziland they allegedly closed because the franchise wanted them to buy chickens from SA and move away from local suppliers.
They tried to break into the lucrative Kenyan market but didn't market right, or enough, amongst other issues and despite being rather good, they folded.
Chicken licked used to be good, the one in Port Elizabeth is disgusting, the chicken is just about inedible and the service is non existent, such a shambles and a great pity, I used to love chicken licken
Chicken Licken is gonna lose customers if they don't fix this issue😂 I think you the 6th person in the comments to mention its too salty. thanks for watching though.
always been curious about SA business giants and how they came to be so thank you for the content

Yeah thing is Chicken Licken struggled to expand into Africa, but a video on Hungry Lion coming soon. Thanks for watching.
The trick is you should never order the original receipt of chicken licken alway order the spicy one to avoid the salt
I'm gonna try this 😂😂 thanks for tuning in.
4:36 our first influencer
sgud sgud sgud sgudisnys😂 thanks for watching.
What can we get for 10c these days!

The best was the rice... Best best

Still stuck on that 10c part
Brilliant marketing it is. thanks so much for watching!

Yeah no doubt, yeah will be interesting to see if they can finally crack the African market. Thanks for tuning in.
Chicken licken was in Botswana as far back as 93
Yeah someone mentioned something about it opening up in Bots somewhere in the 90's. Thanks for tuning in.
Chicken Licken is delicious but the salt is way too much. What's legendary is that his daughter is the sole director of the company!
So many people complained about the saltiness in the comments 😂
haha yeah thats big boss moves from Chantal. Thanks for watching fam.
You know, we've been having breakfast there since I was a child. Very curious about Wimpy. It survived many years. Please can you write about them too?
You bet! Already in the research phase, so most definitely coming soon. Thanks so much for tuning in.
@MzansiBusiness You're a star! We love your content!
Bro can u please cover
SASOL
HIGHVELD STEEL
ISKOR
OLD MUTUAL
TRANSNET
ESKOM
Not looking at the corruption but looking at history to where they are now
Alright no problem bro. Already working on a video for Eskom so you can expect that one soon. Thanks for tuning in.
I wonder why they closed in Namibia
seems like its only profitable for them in South Africa and Botswana. Thanks for tuning in.
@MzansiBusiness please do keep up with these. Definitely was an interesting watch
Not sure about Namibia, but in Swaziland they allegedly closed because the franchise wanted them to buy chickens from SA and move away from local suppliers.
Hungry lion now has more branches than Chicken Licken
I will do a video on them soon as well. Thank you for tuning in.
I used to love CL, until their chicken became so unbearably salty...
agreed. it is a bit too salty. another person also mentioned this in the comment. thanks for tuning in.
A white founded company trademarking "Soul" was crazy from the get go.
so true😂😂 soul food is a black thing.. thanks for tuning in.
@@MzansiBusiness Dope content king, was always wondering why SA businesses don't have such info easily available. Now we do thanks to you.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the only mainstream restaurant that still uses plastic.
They tried to break into the lucrative Kenyan market but didn't market right, or enough, amongst other issues and despite being rather good, they folded.
Thanks for that bro, there was absolutely nothing of this online. thanks for tuning in.
you are now watching cold fusion tv

@@MzansiBusiness same here but your channel is homegrown and we resonate with your content, Big Up G!

Or their tomato sauce, tastes like vinegar
Haven't noticed😂 thanks for tuning in though!
Chicken licked used to be good, the one in Port Elizabeth is disgusting, the chicken is just about inedible and the service is non existent, such a shambles and a great pity, I used to love chicken licken
Damn that sucks, but I guess that one of the problems with huge franchises, it becomes nearly impossible to manage quality control at every outlet
Great Video, I like KFC more, why, Chicken Licken has TOO MUCH SALT!
glad you enjoyed the video. so many people complained about the salt hey, check other comments.
I think Soul food must be called Salt food because the salt, WoW Wow Wow!!! Reduce the salt man.
Chicken Licken is gonna lose customers if they don't fix this issue😂
I think you the 6th person in the comments to mention its too salty. thanks for watching though.
Too salty though...
It's hit or miss depending on where you get it. I find that the soicy mayo and SoulFire sauce make things a lot better.
The chicken shops selling Luke warm or dried chicken on repeat rosebank airport take it or leave it
For real? That doesn't sound good man. Thanks for watching.
R12?? For a whole meal??
Wow, back then life was good 😦
my guy 😂 thanks for watching.
remove that "ColdFussion TV' like intro please. nice and informative channel
it was 100% inspired by Cold Fusion😂. I appreciate the input, won't include in future videos.
Thanks for tuning in.
Do spurs
Bet! You can expect it early 2025.
@ good looking out bro 👊🏾
I prefer them over kfc. But they must make a plan about their excessively salty spice.
3rd person in the comments to mention that it's too salty 😂😂
Not 10c😢
Just brilliant marketing 😂 thanks for tuning in.
It has become too salty. No wonder it got 3 votes
