The fact that an independent film like this has stayed in theaters since late March and hasn't been kicked out by the likes of Marvel and massive budget blockbusters is a huge testament to how amazing this movie is. It's now the highest grossing A24 film ever and it's still going strong, especially now that it's on VOD too for people who can't make it to the theaters to see it.

I think Stephanie Hsu’s performance is so great! She has captured Joy’s loneliness, helplessness, nihilism, and depression so well. At the same time, she just wants her mum to see and understand how she feels. She wants her mum to jump into the void with her, yet it feels like she wants her mum to see something else she had missed. And Evelyn did do that and saved her!

  • @whatchahowsya8688

    Fun facts:
•Entire film's VFX were done by only 5 people.
•Ke Quan worked with and under director Wong Kar Wai (In the Mood for Love) after he retired from acting. The callbacks were absolutely intentional.
•The last fanny pack action sequence was literally Ke's 2nd take.
•There's a lot of Jackie Chan style choreo because the original script was written for Jackie, but he turned down the role and so the directors rewrote the story to focus on Evelyn thus going with Michelle Yeoh.
    Absolutely phenomenal film.

Budget doesn't equate to excellence, but excellence can sometimes be restrained by a multitude of factors like creative control, constraints due to considering continuity, directors/studios clashing ideas, etc. EEAAO is better than DSMOM, hands down. But if you consider how Marvel has been doing this, for how long, with the risks they took early on, the careful treading in stories and continuity they had to do just to arrive at this point, the DSMOM slip-up is absolutely forgiveable.

Kwan and Scheinert deserve a nomination for best original screenplay at the very least -- their multiverse is multilinqual. And Jamie Lee Curtis gets to play the monster to boot! Michelle Yeoh is awesome, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon alone, but so much more. She also acts in the Avatar sequel coming out later this year. It's serendipity that you watched In The Mood For Love just before watching this.
Ke Huy Quan was definitely channeling his best Tony Leung in the 'Film Star' universe, and it's great to have the appreciation for the homage to Wong Kar Wai, a filmmaker who doesn't get much recognition in the West outside of very niche circles. If you get the chance, definitely check out Days of Being Wild, Happy Together, Chungking Express, and 2046 (the last one being a spiritual sequel to In The Mood For Love).

Glad you reacted to the film. I had the pleasure of seeing this magnificently crafted, heartfelt adventure film here in NYC in IMAX (proper in Lincoln Square) and it was glorious to watch there. This film truly deserves to be seen on the big screen. It's still got screens here funny enough, despite Top Gun 2 making bank and still going strong, in spite of people's boundless irrational love for Dinosaur Mayhem coming up soon. This is truly one of my favorite films of all time and one of the best of 2022. This year has been rock solid with some hidden gems and big winners (seeing the incredible aerial bombing and dog fights in Top Gun 2 was incredible in that same screen) ;)

This is a quote from one of the directors (Daniel Kwan) about why they made this creation.
"In a world where everything and everyone is clawing for our attention, where billion dollar corporations see every single minute of our lives as potential real estate to be bought up and sold off for profit, asking anyone for two hours of their time to watch one of our films felt like asking for, well… too much. We realized if we were going to make a film and ask an audience to give us that precious time, the only responsible thing to do in return was to blow their minds and change their lives forever. Or, at the very least, we were going to attempt that."

This is probably me applying a theme I personally found to the film, but I'm going to say it anyways. One of the themes I absolutely love about this film is the wacky spin on symbolism and philosophy, like the googly third eye. It's such a nuanced way to give an answer to the question they're trying to portray, live in the moment, be wacky. And you can apply meanings even deeper than that, accept and embrace others for who they are, be kind to others, because love spreads more love. This film is a masterpiece, and I could talk for so long about how great this film is.

insanity that the majority of the VFX was done by a group of just five artists.
fun fact: the role was originally written for Jackie Chan but he told the Daniels' he was unavailable so they rewrote the role for Michelle Yeoh.
and this fun little exchange from a People magazine interview w/ Michelle Yeoh:
"Jackie actually texted me," she said. "
And he says: 'Wow, I hear amazing things about your movie. Did you know that the boys came to see me in China?'
And I said: 'Yes, your loss, my bro!'"

I'm so glad you reacted to the scene where Waymond says how can we get back because things don't feel quite the same. I've seen so many reactions and no one ever mentions this scene.
It was one of the first points that I was really impacted by the deeper meaning of the movie for me. It really hit home because I feel like there's this unspoken dread that everyone has especially in USA. Also it doesn't help that there's been so much bad news and catastrophic events recently. That's the Global level but this scene also hits on a personal level and is evident in their family dynamic. Everyone is so distracted that even though they're family they are so disconnected from each other even though the parents live together and the daughter is a phone call away. Not to mention daughter father dynamic with gonggong and Evelyn and even the granddaughter who jokes about his death.

I got to see this at an IMAX pre-release screening and it blew my mind. One of the most imaginitive and creative films I've seen in years. Only FIVE people worked on all the VFX and I'm thrilled that Michelle Yeoh got a role that showcases her decades of experience (thanks Jackie Chan for turning it down!). And to see Short Round back was amazing!! Can't wait for the bluray DVD so I can watch as many hours of behind the scenes footage as I can. The editing alone deserves an Oscar, but this film better win awards for EVERYONE involved: cast, writer/directors, hair and wardrobe, stunts, cinematography ... ALL OF IT!

Interesting how you mentioned that this movie needs to have something to give it an extra kick to compete with Marvel/Dr. Strange 2. Personally, while I didn't dislike Dr. Strange 2, I think Everything Everywhere All At Once is just an all around better movie (coming from a big Marvel Comics fan who wants to see Marvel Studios/the MCU succeed and be good). The performances, the very human drama at the core of the story, the way they cleverly handled the multiverse concept, the relatively cheap but really well done effects, and the action were all great in this movie. I definitely need to see it again, because it's up there with The Batman, the Northman, The Outfit and Top Gun: Maverick as one of my favorite movies of the year so far. Also, I just love that the dude who played Short-Round in Temple of Doom is both in this movie and great in it.

I watched this last week, never even heard of it before, just saw it on Amazon and thought the synopsis sounded interesting so I bought it on a whim which is rare for me, I rarely buy movies, I usually just stream what's available for free.
But I'm glad I did, I love the mix of serious drama and absurdist comedy. Great acting and fun storyline, just a really fun mix of styles blended together so well. It has to difficult to pull off seriousness with the absurd but they made it work really well.
I could've sworn the main actor was the kid from goonies, looked it up and I was right, he did a great job in this role.
