You know, I've finally realized after rewatching this several times, the Alpha Joy, becoming Jobu means that in that universe that Joy was the "worst Joy", the one that failed at everything. Because Alpha Weymond said that in order for the mind to be able to handle all those and access all possibilities they had to be from the universe where every choice was the "wrong" choice. And then Joy at the end tells her mom, "Why wouldn't you choose to be in a place where your daughter is better than this", "this" being "me". So Jobu's Joy was a Joy that failed at everything, in a universe where her mother was the ultimate genius, and she went looking for the one universe where her mom failed at everything just like her. So she was looking for someone who's an ultimate failure like her to tell her there's an upside, a reason to go on, that she couldn't see.
So no matter where you are in the multiverse, where you are in existence, by becoming everything everywhere all at once, no matter how high you are, you get the feeling of your worst low, at all times and your worst low gets to see first hand at all times all that you'll never have.

I agree but considering that when Alpha Joy was born, Evelyn was in the process of making the technology to jump universes. Alpha Joy didn't have the opportunity to become anything in the first place, she was born to be Alpha Evelyn's prodigy, the one to lead the cause to "make the Multiverse better". saw this somewhere and had to share it!
-the bagel (black with white center) and the googly eyes (white with black center) are inverses of each other. yin and yang.
-and joy/jobu's perception of "nothing matters" could be argued that if no single thing matters more than any other thing, then everything matters all the same. nothing has any inherent meaning but that's the beauty of it, because we create meaning when there is none

    • @Vaillle
      @Vaillle 2 года назад +9

@@robertballard2998 well neither of those necessarily are good ways to live. I think the main message is that it’s not really the case that nothing matters, because the pain and suffering in life certainly matters to us when we are experiencing it. So given that pain and suffering exists in the world then the best thing you can do is aim at the greatest possible good that you can achieve in order to reduce it, and not make it worse(which is what Evelyn started doing when she first felt the effect of Nihilism). This point is emphasized by Waymand and his be kind message and how we see Evelyn begin to put everything right in all the different universes. She began seeing and caring for other people’s needs(the fight scene) and not just her own. When you strive to alleviate the pain and suffering in the world, no matter how small, it turns out that’s the best way to go through life. It’s a happier and more meaningful life.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a masterpiece. Once you’ve seen it, you just can’t get it off your mind. It’s not your typical movie, for starters, as all the symbolisms in this hold far greater meaning than you could ever imagine it. Michelle Yeoh just snatches the best of the best complex roles. There’s so much more to her character than just being an onscreen mom. You just can’t deny she possesses some extraordinary capabilities. The philosophical messages that have been incorporated in this film may have shaken audiences to the point where they may be seeing things differently from this point forward.

The googly eyes have significance because they’re an inversion of the Everything Bagel, which is a representation of nihilism, the belief that nothing matters. Joy/Jobu Tupaki wants to use the Bagel destroy herself because she views life as having no meaning, but the googly eyes are in direct conflict with that since they’re Waymond’s way of having fun and giving meaning to everything in life. Yes, nothing may matter in an objective sense, but we get to choose what matters to us. :)

This movie is definitely in my all time top 10. I was lucky enough to catch it in theaters. It was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. After, about 7 of us, total strangers, gathered and just talked and shared our thoughts. The bagel represents Joys depression. And she was looking for her mom so she wouldn’t be alone and to have her see what she saw. Turns out it was her dads kindness that they both missed. Waymonds kindness part has us all bawling. When his voice breaks when he says: “idk, I just talked to her.” Kills me. Then his reaction when she hugs him. He so needed it. 🥹🥹🥹 Also at the end, it’s so important that Joy reaches out for help from the darkness. That means a lot. Great reaction guys! 💜💜

just for clarity, Part 1 is set in the main universe, you can tell from the ear pieces that allow the jumping pads to work. Part 2 was set in the universe where Evelyn did NOT do what Alpha Waymond told her to do, and she simply left the IRS building with Waymond(where they then had that convo in the van) and that convo in the van, Evelyn was telling Waymond that she…(was interrupted) loved him, and then told that to Deirdre, but meant it toward Waymond. Which makes what happened after sadder, because her telling Waymond that she loves him, allowed her to see her life without him, which she largely preferred at the moment.

The point of the googly eyes was to represent the Path of Light. When you attain Enlightenment, you can either give in to the Darkness of the Path of Despair like Jobu did, or you can choose to laugh at the ultimate absurdity of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, like Basic Waymond did. The point is, the choice is yours. In every Multiverse Evelyn had dismissed Waymond's lack of sophistication, but in the end, she saw in him the Tao. He was simply Waymond, nothing more, nothing less. And it awoke to her the choice for Laughter instead of Despair.
It is symbolic that she came into her power and transformed bullets into googly eyes, weapons of pain and destruction into absurdities of laughter. Nothing Matters, so why not laugh at it and choose to enjoy the journey? You don't have to be CEO Waymond. Googly Waymond was just as much of a shining soul as CEO Waymond. And in many ways, more of a success, because he was living according to his own essence, his own Tao.
It is more symbolic that she took the bullet that was touching her third eye, and she transformed it into a googly eye and replaced it as her third eye. She chose in that moment to walk the path of Laughter and revel in the absurdity of the Multiverse.
I saw an analysis video on YT about the film where the person compared it to the various stages of the Yogic Journey and pointed out that in act 1 Evelyn is human, but by the time the conflict of act 2 happens, especially before the bagel, Joy and Evelyn are not two human beings fighting, they have moved into the realm of Cosmic Goddesses wrangling with each other over philosophical differences - Jobu trying to end them both, and Evelyn trying to redeem them both.
The more you look at the film, the deeper the story and the symbolism goes.

I would honestly be interested to know how you interpret the movie after you've all had time to sit with it for a while. I couldn't have explained what this movie meant right after I watched it I definitely had to sit with it for a while, it broke my brain too! The whole last 30 minutes are just me sobbing while this movie breaks my heart and heals it several times over before the end. What I chose to take from the movie though is that in a universe where nothing matters I get to choose what matters and what is everything to me. Everything means nothing, but nothing can also really be everything you need. Joy/Jobu went looking for her mom in every universe just to find someone who understood her and Everlyn could have spiraled with her, but instead they made something out of nothing by choosing each other over getting sucked into a bagel lol!

    • @walden6272

Jobu was the worst version of Joy. And the main Evelyn was the worst version of Evelyn. Jobu had to find the worst version of Evelyn through out the metaverse because that would be the only mom that can understand how she feels. Ironically, their lack of achievements or fulfillment gave both of them the ability to accept all possibilities without losing their minds and die. Although the movie made it seems like the worst Evelyn finally saves the worst Joy, it's actually the dad Waymond who is the unsung hero. He saved them both with his love and kindness. Evelyn for a moment was succumb to the nihilism, you see that when she stab Waymond and thought it was too late to change things. But Waymond beautiful endearing laundry and taxes line brought her back. That is when Evelyn awakens her googly eyes and saw things as Waymond did so she help saved their daughter. Family united finally!

Good to see you guys react to this movie! The problem with movies that become huge, like this one, is it can get way overhyped and people tell you so many things that the expectations are way too much. So when you guys heard its cry-worthy, hilarious, and super deep i was like uh oh......thats never good to tell people watching something. But regardless, I hope you guys enjoyed enough = ). (I watched this really early on so no one really spoiled it for me or gave me any expecatations and I didnt' watch any media or traiers either. Its how i prefer to watch movies and tv shows)

I wonder if the directors were influenced by Shoes on the wrong feet by arthouse horror film "Anti-Christ", a subtle detail a kid does in a small scene.

I think this is the best representation of a mother-daughter relationship. The first time I saw this a guy came over and rented it for us. And the movie hits HOME for me. All of it. And he tried making a move for a first kiss and I straight up told him no, I’m watching the movie😭 it was taking everything in me not to BAWL 😂

You don’t remember Pet Rocks from the 1970’s, do ya? They were small rocks with googley eyes. They came in a box and everyone had to have some pets. They would take them out for walks, for a drive, everything. People actually loved their pet rocks. Some joker got some rocks, glued eye on them and became a Fvcking multi millionaire! The devil’s lettuce was much better and way cheaper back then.

Great reaction, thanks! So 12% of people don't get the movie or hate it according to Rotten Tomatoes. 😂 It is still one of the highest audience and critic rated movies of all time. For some people, they just aren't that deep, and are fine that way. Others are way uncomfortable dealing with the feels. A small percentage of people don't have a lot, or any empathy for other human beings, so they might like the fight scenes, but not connect to the emotional stuff. I am fascinated that such a huge number of people love the film, as it is pretty zany. I also love living in a verse where a movie that features a dildo fight scene and a butt plug fight scene is up for 11 Oscars.🤣🤣💯

The meaning of Nothing Matters is where your perspective is. If you’re nihilistic, no matter what you do, the end means nothing, while an optimist would see that if you’re content with what you have, then nothing matters.

I saw this once. Had to watch it in two parts for a few reasons. One, I have odd sleeping hours, but two, It was hurting my brain.
There is a lot I liked about it, objectively. As an Asian-American male and fan of ShortRound and Goonies, I had my own built-in biases and cultural insights to this film and felt it could have been as impactful or more had it been about 30 mins shorter, but that may be because of my energy level.
I will watch it again when I have the time and energy to hopefully watch it in one sitting. I also watched it on my computer. My brother in law, suggested I see it in a theater. We'll see. Thanks for the review.
