My husband had great looking muscular thighs and I loved it when he wore the shorter shorts. 😃
I always wear a three piece suit to work, but instead of trousers I wear matching Daisy Duke's. All the women in the office compliment me on my look and I'm often asked to bend over to pick up their dropped pens (which is several times a day.)

Shorter shorts were originally for men in the first place. 1940s-1990s, over the centuries , BC times, bibical times, Roman times and some troops wore them in the hot climates etc etc.

If I'm going to the beach and the heading out to dinner, I typically pair a speedo with an unlined swimming trunk. When I'm done swimming I take the trunk off and wrap a towel around the speedo. Speedos tend to dry really quick, within an hour, and when I leave the beach I can just put a pair of dressier shorts over the speedo and throw a polo or a linen shirt on. I find this helpful when I don't want to change in a bathroom or there really isn't a bathroom/changing room around. It also avoids having to go about your day with a wet bathing suit and a damp crotch.
A lot of these I've received from stitch fix, they make great stuff and the fits are nice. Sometimes I have to reattach buttons because they aren't always stitched on correctly but overall great pieces
I’ve had a lot of luck with synthetic, stretchy shorts that are reasonably affordable, both in a jogger/casual style as well as chino style with belt loops. I agree that synthetic material / the golf look is inherently more casual than cotton (or other natural fibers) but the trade off for comfort, stretch, and thinness is significant.
You overlooked linen shorts. They're a great option for hot climates, and they're a timeless style.
In addition, since I'm only wearing shorts during warm or hot weather, I tend to get them in spring/summer colors that work with my skin tone.

yeah, I dont understand how he forgot/kept out linen shorts either. When its hot I always wear linen shorts that are 100% and linen shirts that are 100% linen with loafers/car shoes for breathability since it can get very hot where I live. I did not know much about the different seam inches on shorts,but those linen shorts I have bought in the last years sits very good on me. For me linen is the only fabric I wear in heat of the summer, and even when its super hot linen is not enough.
Cold wool is even better than linen

I JUST WENT THRU THIS! Picked up some nice shorts at, of all places, Target but they were 9" inseam. At 6' 2" they were too short so now I'm on the hunt for 10". May have to go online though.
7:01 Taking your shorts to a tailor is a great idea. Why didn't I think of that? I've used a tailor for trousers and sports coats, but somehow, I never thought of tailoring my shorts, of which I have many good ones.

See so many wearing the wrong ones for the setting or just plain wrong in fit.
Another alternative if you need to be dressier is golf pants. Light, breathable, easy maintenance.
I also have dressier shorts in the same style.
I like the Tommy Bahama camp shirts for patio time at home with my shorts or going to the park or beach.
Muted and well made, not the mish mash discount store ones that don’t line up the patterns right. Manufacturers cheap out here especially at the pocket (if there is one, better quality omit the pocket), sleeve seams and placket to save a buck, but it looks cheap and disheveled to a trained eye. (The ladies also notice it, gents!)
One thing about TB though, avoid the splash panel shirts, you’re not 16 nor are you a billboard.
Out in public, either a polo or short sleeved button down. I wear tees around the house but never out in public unless I’m running or playing a sport.

It's funny how men's shorts are such a sensitive topic, especially in the workplace.
I'm an optometrist, and I genuinely feel discriminated when female colleagues are allowed to wear mini skirts, bare legs and flip flops or sandals, while I've generally not been allowed to wear shorts, even at workplaces with no air conditioning and 30 degrees C weather.
Thankfully, I now work at a clinic where we guys are allowed to wear shorts, so I like to wear chino shorts to just above the knee, a tucked shirt and formal leather loafers. Still looks professional.

In countries "down under" like Australia and New Zealand, where Rugby (a winter sport) is popular, it is actually very common to see men in all situations and temperatures wearing rugby shorts (similar to silkies); it is just accepted as normal all purpose wear for men.
Exactly. Outside of America, men wearing shorts is a very common thing.
Only Americans have such a huge problem with guys in shorts and speedos.
Keds no show socks are amazing. Bought my wife some that were too large for her so I took em. Some are pink but hey, you can’t see them and they never fall!

Im glad that you did a whole video about shorts. There are just so many varieties, and the whole excess material around the leg can make a difference between the daisy dukes look and a cartoonish look making your legs look like tooth picks.

Hey Antonio hopefully you can provide a suggestion here, but if I want to wear no show socks with loafers do you have a recommendation? A lot of the ones I've found tend to be too thick to wear with loafers.

As usual, a great job, Antonio! One thing that did pique my curiosity is your use of the term "casual button-down." I thought shirts with button-down collars were inherently casual. I realize that we Americans don't make as clear a demarcation about this as the British. Nonetheless, I did look a bit askance when my father-in-law--"an ultimate preppy" (Phillips-Exeter and Harvard, where he roomed with JFK)--wore a button-down collared shirt to his wife's funeral. I won't wear a BD with my more formal suits, but I will with a casual suit or sport coat (needless to say). Or, by "casual button down" did you mean the kind to be worn untucked? Those are definitely ultra-casual.
Jean shorts can make quite a smart look. Albeit the shorts need to be originally made as shorts and not cut from old pair of jeans. And if you flip them up/hem them like any other pair of shorts. Also I think that henleys should be added to the list of shirts that go well with shorts.

I can't seem to wear nice shoes with shorts, always looks awkward so i wear sneakers or trainers. If the occasion requires nice shoes, then I'm wearing nice pants. Some people can pull it off.

This is a great point: if they're not balanced you can look really silly even with what otherwise would be individually great selections!
Leg proportion is key that is short length to leg length. You'll want to stand in front a mirror with different lengths of the same short. On short men, shorter shorts, make you appear taller. Longer shorts will make you look shorter.

When I was in the military, we had this short major who always wore a pair of long shorts during PT, and it made him look even shorter.
He always reminded us of a cartoon clown in those long shorts 😂

I'm a "heavy set" man who used to be physically better. I am now middle-aged and not so "attractive" but this video is really ok, I'm still going to wear my shorts 3 to 5" inseam and laugh when people are nasty. I will wear shorts suits for formal and when I am dead (too soon for my liking) people have said that they will all be wearing shorts. It's been a delightful video but I will wear my shorts with pride while I can ❤

The length of the legs being two thirds of the thigh covered is a very good rule of thumb. That, or boxer briefs underneath can eliminate the possibility of an embarrassing moment. If you wear shorts a lot in the Summer, you know what I mean.
What is your take on the current shorts trend of the sweatpants-band (often the kind you can tie a knot on to adjust) in the belt area combined with a more formal shorts style (somewhat similar to the Bermuda shorts) for the rest of it?

A common question is what is defined as the knee? The top of the kneecap or the middle?
If someone says "above the knee," they seem to be referring to the top of the kneecap (while standing). If they say "below the knee," they seem to be referring to the bottom of the kneecap (while standing).
It depence your body. How tall you are, what look the best. For swimming speedos are the best.

Nope, socks and shoes choice depends mainly of body anatomy and walking style (which depends on what asymmetry you have in the legs/hips/waist/torso ...)
In the 70s, Bermudas were regularly worn in major Eastern cities at semi-formal, summer events.
Back then, and now, Bermuda shorts with high socks looks absolutely ridiculous.

Antonio - what are your thoughts on "boat shoes" (aka Sperrys) with shorts? I ask because I have never been a fan of loafers.
They're a classic summer shoe, and more casual than loafers. They should work fine with shorts.
Sperry has a lot of the classic designs, plus a few non-classic designs. I would stick with the classic designs.

How do you always come up with great video ideas?
Maybe it depends on the person, but I look horrible with no show socks. I have found short crew works best for me. I avoid colors/patterns and wear only black or white socks with shorts.
The only time shorts are wearable are either in gym or at home or just going out to grocery store nearby or if you are going to resort/beaches/pools but no other occasion.
It's more common in the UK ro see blokes (any age) wear trainers (sneakers) with shorts and done right, and the right style e.g classic Adidas, Nikes etc it looks good..

Cargo shorts are great for European summer (Italy - Milan/Como/Florence/Rome) they look good and hold things! Denim shorts, ummm, why did I buy some??? Deluded dummy me! In places like Florida, swim type shorts are ideal: light, airy and comfortable.
What about Short Sleeve Button Ups ? Seems like you lean towards long sleeves rolled up. As someone living in a warm area during the spring & summer, I prefer button down short sleeves over Polos.
Not sure if this is the case but I know for some reason short sleeve button ups are considered somewhat less than in men's style. No clue why.
Antonio has previously mentioned that he has thin arms. (So do I.) Therefore, for our own style, we favor long sleeves rolled up.
Another consideration: short sleeves are more casual than long sleeves.
That said, short sleeve button ups are still great for summer style. I think they're also an alternative to polo shirts.
@Karl R I agree. Short sleeve dress shirts are not my favorite for myself, but I have gotten used to wearing a few. They're great for slightly less formal places, just want to look good going out. For the sleeves I feel that. This solution isn't for everyone but I've been working on my arm size to fill the sleeves more. It's been a fairly easy journey so far with some good progress. I have not gotten into wearing polos yet. They just haven't suited my fancy yet but I think that might be starting to change. I think being in the area I live im mostly exposed to frat boys wearing them and I associate it with them lol. No shade just not my style, but again, I've been eyeing some polos thinking they may be a new venture.

What’s available in stores? Usually not much for short men’s.
Don't bother the men section. My husband exclusively shops at the ladies in thrift stores, the only way to get proper non-stretch shorts.
7 inches is the perfect length for the average man.
In Australia, where things are far less conservative than the USA, tend towards the more casual, and hot weather reigns supreme, shorts, I think, are far more common. As are speedos. And thongs (the footware variety). In fact, why would you wear sandals at the beach? They'd immediately get full of sand, which is very uncomfortable. And anyway, isn't the first thing you do at the beach is ditch the shoes and go barefoot? Or is that not the done thing?
So, in a place where shorts are standard wear outdoors in summer, do you reckon that one could push the limits a bit further, and get away with shorts at more formal outdoor events?

Real men wear short shorts
Me, I wear cargo shorts almost daily (in warmer weather), because I work in a warehouse and it's appropriate. Indeed, when worn with my usual polo, it can look surprisingly snappy! Even on my non-work days, golf shorts with their own side pockets are a favorite of mine.
As for Bermuda shorts, I could never imagine wearing anything like taht with a dressy jacket. But I wouldn't be ashamed to wear it with the right kind of long-sleeve, casual shirt (polo or button-down), or even some practical kind of shirt-jacket or safari jacket.
No one should EVER be wearing socks with shorts 🤣 Period!
Really short shorts look best if the guy has muscular, hairy thighs. That is a show-stopper.
How in Europe we address the style in a very different way. We don’t work in a high conditioned (cold/hot air) environment, an so we have in many levels more freedom to wear snickers, sandals, or shorts to work.
What we don’t do, even wearing casual clothes is be sloppy.
To the age limiting infos: we don’t make choices based on age, because it’s discrimination… Just saying… And mend are bolder in their work clothes here than in the US of A.
So why is it socially acceptable for a female to have much shorter shorts than a man? If some girl were to walk down the street and they had like 3 to 5 inch length shorts no one says anything about it but if a guy across the street has the same length of shorts people think that that’s way too short for him… Why?

ALL short are pretty much automatically casual because they're not, you know, PANTS. 5 or 7 inches is actually historically correct, but I think 5" is pretty rare now. The 9" phenomenon was partly or largely a bi-product of the cargo short trend, which technically ended ten or fifteen years ago but was welcome at the time because cutting off military pants never quite worked right because they had the double-knees, but then the mass-market "army" shorts didn't have reinforced seats, so they wouldn't last as long as the trousers. And then the companies went crazy and started adding tons of small, non-functional pockets everywhere when most guys who want cargo pockets just pretty much want one useful large one. Same problem with a lot of hunting jackets and vests.

Sorry, all this technical-sounding "proportion" stuff is more the exception than the rule. Most guys are "average" height or it wouldn't be considered "average". Hence, 5 to 7 again being largely correct, with 7 being the more common default now.
Athletic shorts shouldn't be considered Day Wear, though, but along with tank tops and "hoodies" and "trainers" [sneakers] or flip-flops...
Pretty sure Bermuda is a pretty small island and on the mainland most people would wonder why you are not wearing some pants to work. Lightweight options may exist.
Denim shorts are fine if you work on a construction site or some other labor job where they actually allow shorts. I still would mostly go with canvas because it is typically equally durable [or more] and cooler.
