I am 100% with Joel on the Toboggan thing - until I went to WV for a year, a toboggan was always one of those wooden sleds with metal rails. Nope, in the Appalachian region (KY, TN, WV), it's a freakin' hat! I first heard it when someone said they liked my toboggan and I was like whut? I kept looking around for a sled while they kept pointing at my head - I was SO confused. Oh, you mean my HAT?!! It's a HAT! A toboggan is a sled!

Kentucky waterfall... Yeah, that is brilliant. No idea Joel was an Aussie, but he must be by way of Kentucky because he killed it.

Loved this! I grew up in Louisville, Lexington, and Morehead KY... I hadn't heard of ANY of these except one or two, but I felt like there were a ton missing, such as "Peachy-keen," "burning ears," "itchy palms," "Geez Louise," "y'all's/y'all're/y'all'll," "purdy," "youngin'," "holler (as in geographical location)," etc!!! Not that they had to include all of these, I'm just really surprised a couple didn't show up in there! But maybe that's more Appalachian slang? And I've never actually heard people living in Louisville call it The Ville.

    Joel is so cool.
I also have been brought up to think that a toboggan is the same as a sled.
    I'm Aussie.

stickybeak is my favourite. It more so refers to a person who is always looking out their window at neighbours, as in their beaks (noses) are stuck to the window.

In Canada a Toboggan is as Joel described, a long wooden sled for going down snow-covered hills with a few people.
What Jennifer describes, the woolen hat, we call a toque (pronounced "two-ck").

A toboggan (hat) is a particular kind of knitted ski cap. It's a long cone, usually with a tassel at the end.
