You want to know why Carter was so unpopular?
-He inherited an energy crisis that was caused by Nixon's policies a few years earlier.
-He had the audacity to ask the American people to be a little less self indulgent. This is infamous Malaise speech. If you actually read it you will realize that it's one of the most reasonable speeches ever given by a president.
-He did the right thing in the Iran Hostage Crisis, it just didn't work out. He tried negotiating, but it didn't work. He had no choice but to try a rescue, it didn't work. What else could he have done?
That's it. No major war. The economy grew under him. Unemployment went down. The deficit went down. He created the US department of Education. He cut the defense budget. He introduced several important environmental policies. He continued Nixon's policy to improve relations with China. He reduced Nuclear arms. If only every president was as big of a failure as Jimmy Carter.

Thank you, Jimmy Carter, for everything you have done for this country. You will be very missed all across this world. My grandfather was in the Navy with you, and he said you were a great man. And you were going to become something greater than yourself. Sir, you have my respect, and I will pass on your greatest to my kids and tell them everything thing you did. It's not what your country can do for you. it's what you can do for your country. I'm in tears writing this, but if Jesus is calling you home, then sir, it's time to go home. My prayers are with your whole family and your great wife. I never ever got to meet you, but one day, we will see each other in heaven. Please tell my mother and father and grandparents I love them and truly miss them. Once again, sir, thank you, and God bless you 🙏 ❤️

He should have ran again in the 90s - actually, I think he would have made a great post-Reagan president, when circumstances were good and government was smaller.

Imagine being followed by the greatest president of the 20th century. Later for your legacy to be long gas lines, economic stagnation and a hostage crisis that lasted a whole year and ended the day after Reagan took office.
