I've used a few different outside corner applicators and the Columbia plastic outside mud head one is by far the best. My helper and I can bead out a full house quite efficiently with it
I've never enjoyed corner tapes but I enjoy your videos. You're the best hand taper on you Tube. For me galvanised metal skim bead is all I ever use. Gives approx 3mm to feather out. I usually go 12inch out perhaps 16 at skirting board level.
Great video as always Ben! I love the efficiency of my Columbia corner applicator and outside rollers. I’m not a production guy so take longer on my smaller jobs. I go around first with my laser level and draw corner ceiling and floor plumb lines so that i can tweak my bead perfectly plumb. I even use my flat applicator on each side for the second coat as it’s just way quicker to get mud on than by hand. Had an Aha moment when you used the tube to fill the corner bead....sheash!!! I should of thought of that lol.
I have a similar product made by Columbia, but it has an extra hole in the center for mud to come out. the extra bead of mud really makes a difference and i haven't had any problems. love your videos by the way. Thanks from Cape Breton
My personal go to is the green sheetrock hopper. Fills up the metal as well while pre wetting the paper and you don't have to have to carry around the giant tube applicator
We use the No Coat vinyl paper faced corner beads. They are far superior to the metal paper face corners. They adhere to the drywall better and they are more forgiving when people inevitably bump and bang into them. The metal corners will get dented. Also the fill and top coats require less mud, and they don’t flare out as much, making for a better baseboard install. We use the Sheetrock brand corner bead bucket and a corner roller. The bucket can easily be adjusted to apply the right amount of mud.
I use the Columbia tube set that you recommended a few years ago. I do two or three small, 1000 square feet or so, jobs a year and I’ve been really happy with it. Just need to add a nail spotter to the set.
Hey man, Kevin here from Australia. Great video, as a home handyman I've always struggled with external corners a roller would have been a god send on past jobs. ✌ peace.
I watch just cause your fun to watch and the knowledge is super useful when I run into home repairs. Commenting for the algorithm 😁 when I patch a hole applying texture and perfectly flat small areas are very difficult for me.
Plug the dispensing holes and re drill closer to corner. Seems like a quick / easy fix if you like the rest of the tool/applicator. Might be able to have plug or some type of adapter plate with channels from old holes to new located holes.
I used the bead box (hopper) and roller in the 1980's, but found that the framing was too crooked. So now I apply mud by hand, usually using super-wide bead. I often have to pinch the bead to get it to fit on crooked or warped framing. Sometimes I have to shim the drywall with pieces of shingle, just to make it so the corner bead will even fit. But I always make sure there will be mud under the paper and part of the metal flange.
I’ve been subscribed to you hear for a while, and just found your skate channel! I was researching how to build a concrete ledge for out D.I.Y. spot. Thanks for the great videos on both channels!
Great vid! I usually just slap it on the back with my hand. Was wondering what would be best. Too expensive to keep buying drywall tools that don't work or don't really save much time.
Hey know it was a full year ago.. but what you did when you ran the tube, one of the fastest production tapers i ever met had a little thing to hold the bead to lay on the floor for beads and he'd run the inside with an inside corner applicator left a bit of mud on the metal and left a heavy bead right on the paper, kindof like a hopper but was honestly a better two person system then the hopper and i still do it solo sometimes myself
If you get the fully plastic bullnose corner applicator it works exxelently for both types of bead, it also leaves some extra. Biggest issue is it doesn't have wheels so if your hangers are using a dull roto and leave torn paper edges it'll catch and drag them
First, thanks for the videos. I'm a 20 year stucco plasterer working indoors this winter for the first time and the transition was so much easier learning from your videos. We use plastic corner beads and I was wondering if these applicators roll out for the plastic beads? The last house I tried apply the mud with a 3" corner trowel. It worked pretty good and half the time as coating both sides with a knife
Mr. Carpenter, To stop All Purpose Compound from bubbling, apply Dish Soap in the 5 gallon buck thoroughly with a mixer at slow speed. Don’t mix quickly or for too long otherwise you will add more air to the mix. To test how much soap to use, add a smaller amount in a mud pan and mix with your 6” taping knife. Apply the mud to the wall and see how it works. Still see bubbles add a little more soap.
Ben, it seems like you could drill a hole in the mud applicator right down in the crevice. Then mud would also apply to the corner. Might take some testing from a small size hole working to larger to get the right amount to come out where you want it.
one of the other taper guys on youtube says you have to fold out the paper outwards before applying, then the roller will roll the paper into the mud and squish it towards the metal part of the corner bead.
I use a tapetech head for externals. Another trick I've seen is using the mini internal corner roller directly on the inside of the corner bead like you're buttering it.
Hello! The following comment doesn’t go here but I need help asap 🤦🏼♂️ I wanted to paint a wall but the old paint was cracked/peeling so I started chipping it away. Next thing you know I have a large chunk of drywall (4’x6’) that’s down to the paper. The edges are relatively thick and if you wanted you could easily keep chipping away. I decided to primer (pro999) and then I’ll skim it. Before I go any further, is this what you would recommend? I appreciate any and all help!
I have the can am applicator, puts on twice as much mud , the roller is the problem, if you “push” into the bead , you can flare out the bead and lose your gap , also takes a real feel to float over a bevel , and not twist
Can you patch a 4 dimensional hole on zhe wall? I mean a three dimensional repair on the nth dimension. What kind of mud zhis best? Your friends in NASA
Also more likely to crack due to being directly attached to the studs- which swell and contract over time and along with rise and fall of humidity in and outside the home. The paper faced corner bead has a slight floating action, meaning it’s not directly, or as drastically affected by the shrink/swell of the studs
External corners in plasterboard (drywall for you yanks) are always a hassle. They always get damaged and chipped and they are awkward to repair. The metal beading certainly helps but it's never a perfect answer. When I worked (Architectural) I tried to avoid external corners but if there wasn't an option I used to call up Acrovyn guards - made in USA. They are okay for commercial installations but are a bit too institutional foe domestic use.
I still do everything by hand, I'm generally only doing a bathroom or kitchen remodel so all the tools and cleanup wouldn't help me out much I don't think
It's my called picture cut and yes some companies demand it way less chance of cracking. Boarder prefer piecing the top sheet way easier but we do what they ask no boarder does that without it being requested
They suck you need mud in the middle to make the corner bead stronger , I drilled a hole in the middle witch gave me more mud ,but then you have to add mud at the top and the bottom , when I first started taping it was all by hand .I found the bead box little better and faster, the corner roller well I thru that out ,lol , one side take a lot a mud the other take a little ,you have to check with your 5 or 6 inch top , middle and bottom to find that happy medium, not a fan of the piston now that Iam a drywall service person for last 9 years ,compared to the old school, you had a really hard time ripping the bead off , now I can rip one off in 2 seconds.
Always amazes me when some demonstrator/tester comments on how the "mud is probably too thick", and then wonders why the results are sub par. Also, No-Coat mud on bead is way better than metal paper faced bead. Both for longevity, and bridging non straight framing.
You can only use these tools if the dry wall is perfected you can’t use this tools in less than ideal scenarios. So you follow a really goo: crew.you should acknowledge that
You made this tool look so hard, to many applications for putting on a paperbead, you should time yourself from doing it by hand vs the tools your using, way to much work
I think I’ll call my metal guy instead.Just joking 😁. I’ve been taping for 26 yearsAnd I got to tell you I use all the tools but that one. I think they invented that tool just to piss you off.

Great video! So let me get this straight, you are carpenter, who wears electricians shirt , doing drywall and taping! Perfect!
I watch just cause your fun to watch and the knowledge is super useful when I run into home repairs. Commenting for the algorithm 😁 when I patch a hole applying texture and perfectly flat small areas are very difficult for me.
Hey Ben! Great video! We'll drop by some tools that will work great for ya every time!!! 😉😉😉
Give him a pump with a gooseneck to fill the tube Brad Hanna Style.

I have a corner roller that you showed for inside corners. I started to use that inside my corner beads.
I use the Platinum outside corner bead head. Works very well
Yes! As I learn how to use the corner roller i find that poor drywall jobs can offset a ninty degree corner bead with roller. Cheers

I don’t know how to call it but have u ever done a reverse bullnose? Can u show us a video if u know what I’m talking about please thank you.
Skaters are multi talented!!
I bought the plastic applicator with the grooves it works good

These auto drywall tools are really expensive. Are they worth it? If so which tools and what brand is best quality?
What do I do! 😬 any suggestions ?
Oops
Trim Tex plastic beads with trim Tex glue. Use them all the time and never have a problem. Cheers
AvE wouldn’t put that in the Dewclaw’s hizouse.

great vid. but i only use screw corner bead. takes longer, but NEVER fails
The product was designed to be nailed or screwed on. It also has you more likely to true your corners.

Why don't u just drill wider holes in that applicator..
You was showing your UNERWARE

Did the drywall installer really install a full sheet of drywall only to remove 80% of it for the window?

and No-Coat is way more expensive
@@keikeiasako Not when you factor in the labor and mud savings.

The "jump and swipe!" I've tried that 1000 times and it's never worked for me!
i haven't go to this stage yet but it shouldn't be long.
I had headache installing the corner bead
