I've been dreading the 4 corner beads on two walls that frame a washer and dryer. And then this video came to the rescue. The spray adhesive and staples worked perfectly. In the past, following magazine articles, I used drywall screws or nails and fought with the resultant bulges in the bead and trying to cover the nail heads. The beads are laying flat, the mud is so much easier to apply and the results are looking quite good. As with the inside corner video, thanks so much for the pro tips on tackling what was once a difficult job. A sincere thanks!!
Such great news Dominic! That’s the good thing about video, you can see exactly how it’s done. I have got so many questions on my drywall videos on how to finish inside and outside corners. For these outside corners the spray adhesive and staples on vinyl corner bead is so much easier than trying to screw or nail like you said. The vinyl corner bead always seems to bubble up right next to where you put a screw or nail. I’m glad my videos are coming in handy for you! Thanks so much for watching and the great feedback! Take care, -Paul
I landed in Orlando in 2016 as I was looking out the plane I could tell the land was sinking. I thought about the gators and how dangerous they are in such an urban area. I wondered how that was dealt with by people in the area and what kind of a problem it was or may be. When I got back home the news the very same day told about a child eaten by a gator. I think it may have been in Orlando where I was at Disney. His dad was there and tried to save him but no luck. I still cannot get over it. By the way I think Florida is too damn hot I had to take refuge from that heat or it would have killed me. Dead.
Paul, awesome video. If you have the opportunity, could you show how to install and finish were corner bead strips meet? Where vertical and horizontal corner bead meet, like a doorway.
I never use staples but I agree it would help it hold and bond to glue better. That glue dries fast as hell. I’ve never had any problems it not staying on.
Paul, how do you address vinyl corner bead that has popped loose on one side. Is it sufficient to just reattach with staples? In this case, it has already been mudded and painted, so any final finish repairs would follow getting the corner bead securely reattached.
Hey Paul, looks good. I don’t know if this will help, what I started doing was using the 90 min powder mud on my second coat and a mason trowel. I was tired of that gully you were referring to on you final skim coat. All my wife knives seem to flex too much and never got the corner dead flat. I like the 90 powder because it allows me to get second and final coats in one day if I desire. An added bonus is that mud dries harder and if someone bumps into it as they always do it is a little more forgiving and doesn’t gouge all the mud out before it’s painted. Keep up the good work.
Do you tape corner beads? I had tile put in shower and they put vinyl corner bead in the entrance. Do I just fill it with mud where the corner bead meets the drywall?
it looks like the drywalls at the corner should not be butted. The pros seem to cut it short half inch and not butt both sides of the drywall. Is that true for all types of corner beads? Metal and vinyl or paper?
Hi Paul. Have you ever heard of cutting vinyl corner bead down the middle in a case where you needed flat bead? I have an incorrectly installed shower stall where the typical shower bead won't work. I need a flat bead, which would work better than mesh tape. I thought cutting corner bead would be easier than trying to find the tear-away type of bead, which isn't in my local store. Thanks for any thoughts, and all your great videos.
Great tutorial for what appears to be a big improvement over the metal corner bead. I have one that has several nail pop-ups and I'm debating whether to cut it out and replace it with the trim tex or just reset the nails with a punch and remud.
Love these videos- thanks for all the helpful info! If I'm skimcoating over an existing knockdown texture to get a smooth wall, how do I handle outside corners to make sure they're nice and clean? Another layer of corner bead?
I'm not working on anything. Just want to know if you could use it to skimcoat concrete walls. Will it be okay to apply on bare concrete or does the wall need to be primed with paint first?
Hi Paul! I'm working on some projects @ the house. I have metal corner bead which is dented and the mud has come off. So I have ugly metal bead exposed. I want to redo with the vinyl corner bead. Question is do I remove the metal bead? Or put the vinyl over it? Hope this isn't a dumb question.
Wish I would've came across this a day ago. Just did a similar job and I didn't use any adhesive. I only used mud to hold the corner beads...hope it works🙄😖
DIYer here. About to use this vinyl corner bead. Great video! I have a question though. Do you leave the corner of the bead clean and exposed? I see that you scraped the edge to clean any mud off. Does that leave the vinyl exposed? And eventually it just gets painted over? Thanks
I"ve seen that confirmed in another video. The vinyl bead at the corner takes paint but not mud. don't trust me though, I"m just researching before my first DIY lol. Check out my music though!
I use metal bead with mud behind it, squeeze it into the corner, then I tape it with fibafuse. I only staple it in places I need to if it doesn't sit how I want it to. I imagine the vinyl bead is so it doesn't want to rust in the bathroom.
What if someone bangs into that corner bead? The bead will probably pop off if hit just right would be my worry. Yes I always use vinyl corner bead in bathrooms to prevent rusting due to how humid can be. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Brandon!👍🏻 -Paul
I got the idea from the paper faced metal mud on bead. The mud seeps thru all the holes in the regular metal bead which helps it hold, and I tape and mud over it in the same setting but don’t fill and float the bead until that dries. I have had a crack line on the edge of the fibafuse on a couple, but no beads have popped off after an impact. I’m an electrician now, but I did general commercial construction for 15 years. I was always doing some amount of miscellaneous drywall and I always like talking to finishers. I’ll soon be trying out that skip trowel texture of yours. Never heard of it until your channel, but I like that idea.

I plan to mud the joints and basically treat it like it's drywall. I will put a skim coat on it first. Should I skim it before or after I tape and mud the corners? Thanks

What could you do to fix a corner bead once the tile is already up and the corner bead didn’t stick good? Also it wasn’t a vinyl corner bead. It was a metal one with paper. And the husband pulled the paper off 🤦🏻♀️ The paper didn’t stick. Help? Now there is a lip.
Yeah man, I’m using a 12” stainless steel drywall knife for mudding and a 6” drywall knife to scrape the high spots before I did the final coat of mud on the vinyl corner bead. Hope that helps, -Paul
Anyone ever had/seen issues with using rustable staples under mud in a bathroom environment? I see issues with old wallboard screws on a regular basis.
The adhesive certainly helps with installation, however most adhesives over time break down or loses their bonding strength. In this case it may not be an issue or it may take 15 to 20 years for the bond to become brittle, but one should be aware of this situation when considering long term durability. Nice work.
I appreciate that mFarris.👍🏻 I also added staples as well to hold the cornerbead in place. I think the bead is good to go for many years to come. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Not here to troll...but I can't remember a time when rubber cement breaks down....the adhesive is essentially rubber cement in a can.... that's why I can't figure out why staples....
Hi Paul, after watching your video, I did this exact process with the adhesive, corner bead, and even got the same stapler; however, the adhesive got into the tip of the stapler that cycles and fires the staples and the powershot won't fire anymore unless I manually push that tip in. Have you had this problem with your stapler?
Hey Mark, I haven’t had that happen to where it wouldn’t shoot. Just stick. Usually when the stapler won’t fire it’s due to a staple jam. Have you checked for a staple or something else jammed in it?
Thanks for the quick reply Paul! Yes I checked for a staple jam and I am able to manually tap the firing tab back inwards, but it's quite slow to have to manually re-set it every time I want to shoot a staple in there. I hit the tap with some penetrating oil and worked it in and it didn't correct the problem. I'll swap it out at the store with a new one, I'm guessing there is some kind of factory defect with it. Also, thanks so much for the video, the process was really quick and finished really nicely in my renovation!!
@@sparksmach1 You said you accidentally spray the adhesive into the end of the stapler? If thats so, and is the reason the stapler is malfunctioning, take some Acetone or Laquer Thinner and clean the end of your stapler. Let it soke into the tip area really well. It will break down the adhesive, and should allowthe stapler to function as it did when new.
Paul. When using all purpose mud I have always allowed my first coat of mud to dry 48 hours then 24 hours for each additional application. Is this correct or do you have any suggestions on this? Thanks.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting!👍🏻 Take care, -Paul
JPer: Ha. You've never lived in Hawaii. The "metal" will rust out in no time here in Hawaii. Only folks fresh to the islands use it. Especially near the ocean. Just saying. Location. Location. Location.
Why not use mudset so much better on the environment
CAUTION! ! I ordered the 847 Adhesive - took 20 days to get it at a cost of $42.15! ! ! ! Just can't believe this.

@@PaulPeck yep! ONE can. I got suckered!
Horizontal surfaces are “level,” vertical surfaces are “plumb.”
Spray adhesive ..... Staples ... Mud .. Lol where the hell do they do this ? Lol can u imagine how much spray adhesive we'd use at a. Real jobsite lol
Can’t you just put mud up first to get the bead to stick?
He used way too much of the spray. Do not spray it liberally...it does not take that much spray. You are just wasting the spray.
