Love the simplicity. I started playing 3 years ago and would spend hours trying to crack various “guitar codes.” Caged circle of fifths etc. It really just comes down to playing a lot and recognizing patterns lol
Thanks for the reply. Yes, you are so correct. When it boils down to it, it’s just you playing your guitar and creating your own pathways. We can all talk the same language like you mentioned, but it’s your creative musicality that will be what becomes your biggest asset.

I never put together that that "C shape" triad was built right into the Barre Chord shape. That's really enlightening! Thank you!

Larry is my dad. He told me about meeting you and mentioned the children's book you are working on. As a bass player and someone who loves 90's music we often aren't learning the same stuff but we do jam together on occasion. I like triads because I usually am able to improv a bass line over a song he already knows just by playing root 5th octave.

Great video. I can confirm this will open up your guitar playing in a great way. For some of you who struggled to put your thumb over the top, especially if you have small hands, I recommend an EVH Wolfgang. It is a very small neck and easy to wrap your hands around.

@@mrelmoresmusiclabyes, and many G&L’s have that 1 5/8 nut width too. I have one with a medium C. The Wolfgang is a bit easier because it has less meat on it. I always wanted to try an ENMM though! Especially because they have the 1 5/8 nut that I prefer.
Very nice, yeah I had an EBMM Valentine but the neck was too small for my liking. I think you can find ways to get the thumb over and kind of adjust your technique if needed, but a lot of people will need a smaller neck indeed. It's great we have so many choices to fit our tastes. :)
@@mrelmoresmusiclabI definitely agree it’s possible with technique. For me, I have arthritis in my hands so a thin small neck is best for me. But honestly, if I play any neck too much, some part of my hand ends up hurting, even if it’s something that’s never hurt before lol. So I try to play o two guitars with different necks to keep my hands as pain-free as possible. I try to get as many miles as I can out of them.

The bar you speak of is a Am can be a triad if you don’t fully bar it . I took 3 strings off my guitar for a while . My bars are now triads.

I'd like to add, a C chord in the 8th fret, has a more or less CEG's than in the 3rd fret or 1st fret. So when it comes to making chords, you have to know what "flavor" you want, i.e., more C, or more E or more G's in the results. This little seasoning is part of what shows the difference between a seasoned pro and a beginner. The tilt of the pick ( or fingers ), and whether or not you play close to the bridge (sharp noise) vs close to the neck (mellow sound), is even more flavor. You could just cook a piece of meat in a pan, or you could toss it on the grill, add seasonings and such - and the difference is night and day. These are some of the methods that make beginners wonder why they don't sound like the pro's they listen to.
So funny you should mention this....yes...playing guitar is just like being cook or chef. I have a bunch a videos on triads and all of the triads have their own flavor or vibe. It's such a long and cummulative process. If you put in the time to learn you will always be growing as a musician. Thanks for sharing and I will be dropping a music theory series next Monday. Nice video, nice Guild! I have a F-44 from the mid-80s. I am working on comping myself in jazzy bluesy swingy songs, and trying to flesh out arrangements with partial chords that move from one chord to the next, or provide illustrative value, if that makes sense, such as a bass line worked into it. I'm having some issues with being able to do this with new songs I try to learn. I have a limited toolbox and am looking to expand it.

Man, that is so cool that so many people are talking about their Guilds. It almost seems like the Guild family is an underground movement. ha. Yeah, that guitar sings like no other.
I can't really even put my finger on it. It just sounds like a Guild and stilll can't believe my mom let me take it home. ha. I do have it at my Luthier and he is going to put a shim under the nut and just give it a minor setup. I have feeling I am going to play that guitar a ton. Your Guild sounds incredible. And...didn't Brian May of Queen pretty much rock a Guild electric most of his playing career? Keep going and let that Guild sing.

For some reason once you started strumming between the C and A chords, the pattern reminded me of Peggy March’s hit “I will follow him” which Whoopi also reprised in the Sister Act movie. Strange huh?

Okay, so I put the Am and C major chart in there and I put a G major chart as an extra. The triads are inside of the bar chords. You will totally get it. Let me know if that helps.

I think of the triad as just a part of the big major chord. And I try to learn as big of chords as possible (like open c shape up and down the neck), just to break them up into little chords

Great vid I was thinkng about triads I just heard of them recently I studied music in a class in college, but I never been able to read music, even though I play several instruments, it's also tough cause I can't use my pinky when I play guitar my the middle two finger become non responsive when I use the guitar 😢 so I'm gonna have to use my first three fingers to do the triad oh well

Nice, I always pt out how similar Frusciante is to Hendrix on Rhythm style... Agree! Triads are great. Learning them all over the neck AND paying attention to which ones are Tension vs Blends is the way to go!
For sure. You can tell John is big disciple of Jimi. You just can't go wrong with triads all over the neck. They all have their own distinct flavor.

@mrelmoresmusiclab took lessons in Nashville so I can recognize the good instructors from the bad. This lesson can easily give a beginner a good start. If you pair an Aminor/Cmajor pentatonic lesson with the one above, it would be a Grand Slam.

In my head I am always thinking about how to teach people how to connect the dots in the long-term. I have been getting quite a few requests to do some videos on the Nashville numbering system.

Hendrix played the bass note with his thumb. this gave him an extra finger to play the licks but still having the bass root. John Frusciante mastered the technique as well. It will really stand out in Little Wing and Under the Bridge by RHCP. helps to have a long thumb
Nile Rogers from the band Chic and also the guy playing Lets Dance rhythm by Bowie. His main sound is playing those three middle sings . its funky'

I bought brand new in 1980. My favorite acoustic. I just sold my 1980 Guild F 40 BLD. The larger body just didn't feel right for me. Los Angeles

I'm missing the top portion of my fretting hand thumb from a work accident, so I can't really do the thumb wrap around trick, I rely on palm mutting more for that. Same effect. It can be done. Just had to adapt. Tony iommi played without chunks of his fingers too
Love it! I was showing this to my mom and she was telling me how her hands were to small. I told her she would come up with her own style for playing. Iommi is was one of the greatest to ever do it. And, I think Jerry Garcia had some kind of accident to his hands. Nothing will stop us. Keep going

This is a great lesson, and I couldn’t agree more. The earlier someone gets introduced to triads, the earlier the fretboard opens up, and the more a player’s musical vocabulary grows.
This is also a GREAT rhythm lesson, and it doesn’t matter how great a lead guitar player someone is: Great rhythm players get the gigs.
Yes, you are totally on track and couldn't agree more with what you said. Rhythm is the foundation for everything we do. We just get wowed by all the lead playing when we are younger. Look at Keith Richards, he is a master at rhythm. Keep going.

I don't know if this makes sense. But my abilities are beyond my knowledge of the guitar.I can do chords.I know some chords. I know what arpeggio is ...I'm just several hrs and many reps away... finally past the.. "omg, why does this have to be so difficult AND painful" part. 😂 i understand it, but gettin my hands to do what my head knows...different story
I hear you. Just remember guitar is like a thousand tiny things going on at once and it takes time to make them sync up. Just be patient with the process and most of all patient with yourself.

So...this would be going from the bar chord to the triad set on the DGB strings. See if you can do it and create a really solid rhythm without stopping. Stuff like this will turn you into a killer rhythm player. Also, you want to learn your triads all over the neck, so that you never feel limited in your chord selection. Does that kind of make sense?

At the very least you should start recognizing the triad shapes in the C and Am chords I played in the video. I even have chord charts I made linked in the description.

Do these triad shapes work on all major/minor chords?
Yep, they do 100 percent. I have a lot of videos on this very thing, but I'm going to start really building it out even further. Once you start getting these under command you won't be stopped.

I've been told today triad are for jazz is this true ?
Triads are really for everything we do in music. I like to think of them as the bones of music. Triads are useful for every single style of music you can think of. Jazz uses much more sophisticated chords, but they are all built on the triads first.
For example...a C triad is CEG...the 135 of the C major scale. If you want to make a C sound "jazzier" you still keep the triad...you now will add the 7th or B. That will now make it a major 7 chord. CEGB.
I know this is a lot, but just do your best to learn as many triad shapes as you can and the rest will be easy. I'm going to double down and start making a lot of new videos on triads, so keep coming back. Keep going.

When he’s using his thumb on the C chord, he’s playing a C sharp (9th fret) instead of a C (8 fret). Am I missing something ?
I had to go back and watch this to see what the heck I did. So yeah, I am wrapping my thumb over on what would be the C Sharp on the low E but I’m not playing that note at all. Literally just muting it out for a percussive style. Does that make sense?
Yeah it does. You’re not the only guitarist I’ve seen doing that but now I know how it works. I’m a guitar player too but I don’t have the thumb reach. Thanks.
You will get it over time. My thumb kind of just lands where it does, but I use it for muting 99% of the time.
yes you are missing something. He is just using it to anchor his hand, not play the note.
