    collectors should also be aware that there is another edition that closely resembles the blue complete collection but includes different content. Its called the collectors gift set, published by little brown. Its also a blue slipcase boxset with identical spine and box art. However the collectors gift set does not include congo or soviets, vol.1 of that edition contains america, pharoah and lotus, and instead it includes an 8th volume called tintin & co. which does not contain any actual herge stories, but is instead a supplement to the series with a chapter dedicated to each of the main characters. Anyone in the market for one of these sets should be very careful about which edition they are purchasing if having congo and soviets is important.

    When I was young and still living with my parents, my father and I collected all the paperbacks (in Dutch). When I moved out I started collecting English hardback compilations like these (without the box set). After buying two collections with some of my favourite albums, the British publisher changed the size, paper, printing, and album sequence on the series so I had to start over again. I bought two but never got around to it. Your videos have actually rekindled my love for this classic series, and this month I will start the hunt to collect all of the albums, in Dutch, in hardcover! It's something I have always wanted but never got around to :)

    As a french canadian, I was lucky to grow up with the original larger hardcover editions in french. We also have smaller-sized editions available these days, some in box sets, but I would never consider buying them. Even less so if it's missing TINTIN IN CONGO. I understand the reasons why some publishers and countries have banned the book, but I still think that it was a product of it's time and could still be included with a warning/explanation text. In any case, glad you got a swell Tintin t-shirt in the deal. It was certainly worth it to Egmont as I don't see any other english speaking RUclipsr doing as much to spread the love for Hergé's classic series than you have.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much!
      Yes, I love the hardcover 'regular size' Tintins I have now, but the treasures will always be those now-ragged Methuen paperbacks from my childhood, in some ways.
      But can you imagine having all the stories in those giant facsimile editions from Little Brown like the ones they have for The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's treasure?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +1

      Also, I was discussing Congo here in another comment - I think Egmont wants this to be a one-swoop introductory pack for new readers, or for old readers to gift to people unfamiliar. As such, it seems less aimed towards Tintin fanatics/scholars/experts/collectors, as I think the shrunk format also evidences. So I can understand why they don't take the 'explain it in a note' approach that may work well for a scholarly or at least 'adult' audience, and want to avoid the issues/ accusations from unsuspecting parents, say, who find the box set they bought for their child to have something like that.
      Growing up, Methuen didn't publish Congo (I didn't even know it existed until I was almost out of my teens!) so I think it's something that makes sense to me - and unlike my childhood, at least there's a nice collector's edition hardcover of Congo out there now, so it's not so much a question of censorship or denial as it is of marketing, I think.

    Regarding these smaller format 3-in-1 collections, the best one by far for 21 of the books is the original collection published by Methuen and Atlantic/Little Brown in 1990-1992. The books are slightly bigger and they contain the Hyslop font. The paper isn't the glossy type in use since the late 90s, but instead the type they used in the early 90s, after they dropped the traditional matter paper. The complete collection is the best small-format edition available fro Soviets, Congo and Alph-art.
    I agree, of course, that full-size is the best way to read them. Even then, the books were slightly reduced in size in the late 90s. I don't know if the artwork is smaller though. The only exception is Tintin and Alph-art. The 2004 full-size version has most artwork only taking up some of the page. In the 3-in-1 edition the artwork takes up the full page, with the exception of a few pages. This actually makes the artwork bigger than it is in the full-size version. Of course, the best edition by far is the original 1990 publication.

    Great video, as always! I can't remember the last time I've seen a content creator who consistently gets zero dislikes on his videos; it's a testament to your viewer-focussed approach, and, I suppose, your charm XD By the way, you mentioned that the bindings are tight, but are they sewn or glued?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you so much for that; it really means a lot to me!
      I think I am way too tiny for dislikes (but I also do get them - just the other day someone had gone through eight or nine of my videos in half an hour giving them all dislikes; I guess I rubbed someone the wrong way?) and when I do get them I wonder why they didn't leave a comment telling me *what* they disliked.
      But what I am most appreciative of is the engagement and viewer retention, the returning viewers and the lengthy discussions. I love how articulate and expressive and thoughtful the people are who choose to spend time on my videos and that is my #1 reason to keep making videos. So thank you once again.
      And the bindings are nicely sewn but also glued afterward: the not-uncommon 'perfect sewn' approach! 😀

    I just stumbled upon your channel the other day when I was looking for reviews on a couple books. Very glad that I did. You've already helped inform me of a couple things. Been wanting to pick up Asterix and TinTin finally. Read as a kid, soon to be 48 now, loved both series but just hadn't pulled the trigger on buying them. I was literally about to buy the Papercutz Asterix Omnibus editions until you did the size comparisons. I was so glad I watched that video I want the books in the graphic album size and with the translation that I more than likely read them in. And then this TinTin video just saved me again. Why do these publishers want to shrink these books? *sigh* Anyways thank you for saving me on purchases I would have been unhappy with and of course I subscribed to the channel.

      Thank YOU for your kind words, and I am thrilled that I could help! As for the image size, it is proportionately smaller. I tried to do a direct comparison in this video, but because of the wide angle distortion, it wasn't making the point visually so I cut it out. It's about 20% or 25% smaller, I would say?

      Honestly, they're pretty good as you can see here , lovely solid hardcovers, elegantly designed. However, if you have the patience and don't *have* to have a box set, I'd almost recommend getting the individual volumes piecemeal. The full-album size is truly the best way to read them, you can spread your spending over several months as you read and buy in batches, and they are also available in both paperback and hardcover (the last I checked). There's no box, sure, but you also get the wonderful covers at that album size and they would be my first preference, personally. But for a first-time reader with no expectations from earlier readings, I don't think the blue set would disappoint either. I hope that helps in some small way?

It may be a marketing move or some other technicality, but leaving that out of the set is something I will appreciate. Interesting to see these different «packaging» for Tintin. The two box sets are the same as the french editor Casterman. But I never saw soft covers
    for the french edition of the full size albums of Tintin, it’s always hard covers. The fact that «Tintin and the soviets» was recently colorized could be a
    bit criticized because it’s clearly for commercial interests. I think Moulinsart society (previously Tintin Licensing) has the rights for all publishing of
    Tintin. Because there is no new material or albums their only options is to publish different sizes, different packagings to keep interests in sales.
    Not only for french speaking countries but around the world.

    I assume 'Congo' gets left out of modern editions because of the racist/colonialist depiction of Africans therein... which is sad. Including it with a disclaimer saying that it reflects attitudes of that era would be more than sufficient for anyone willing to buy an entire box set.
    Also, glad you brought up the font for the dialogue! I've grown accustomed to the new one but my favorite will always be the old non-italicized one! :D

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I wonder if Egmont received any backlash for a non-disclaimed version which is why they decided to take it out for the red box. I agree with you that it is good for collectors to have everything in one set, but maybe these shrunken boxes are not for aficionados as much as for new readers, maybe kids being gifted a collection by nostalgic adults? In which case they want as little friction as possible?
      And yes, while I do not think the 'new'font (I've heard it's based on the original French lettering, but I could be wrong) is the worst thing ever committed to comics as some do, I do love the bolder and more idiosyncratic lettering I grew up with. I'm perfectly willing to put it down to nostalgia, though 😀

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +4

      @James Wayne Well, I largely agree with you but I think a packaging of materials for kids, for example, or something that otherwise stands the test of time after a few excisions, are not bad candidates for adjustment.
      Note that this is different from censorship - Tintin in the Congo is in print, available in hardcover and paperback, colour and black and white - just not from Egmont and in their box.
      Now, Criterion may deem certain movies worthy and others not, any 'classics library' would do the same. They (Egmont) just choose not to have something so confoundingly different and unfamiliar with a larger chunk of more acceptable material (again, I speak of general audiences reading for the first time, not scholars or collectors like you and me, ha) .
      I never knew of Soviets and Congo growing up because they weren't published by Methuen and Magnet either, and I believe that is true for most readers. It stopped something off from interfering with our enjoyment, and we found them later, as adults who could - and wanted to - study things a bit more closely.
      Heck Disney has straight up locked away The Song of the South. I am not saying this material should be locked away. I'm just fine with a box set aimed for popularity, new readers and nostalgic ones not to have an artifact from another time that is so hurtful today when they could just have artifacts that are still enjoyable today exclusively.

I do however love my set but its looking pretty shabby (I loved it so much I would take it on family hikes in my backpack until the box turned into a net).

  • @jasonnikolic
    @jasonnikolic 4 года назад

    Thanks for the video, I opted for the red box set.
    As someone who can deal quite fine with the small Archie Digests, I can deal with this. Also worth noting you can only buy Congo in its full size to complete the red box set, a bit odd on the shelf. I opted for the Red box as it is $100 cheaper than the yellow box set and neither are authentic "complete sets" anyway, except for the blue box... but then it's small... you can't win! I think the hard cover red box set it is more likely to be read and left on the table for further reading as the larger ones you may be more protective with. For example, I'm less likely to let my partner touch my precious singular paperbacks if they are left hanging around on the coffee table, but a smaller hardcover? Go for gold.
    One comic I could never have comprised in size is the Asterix box set I also ordered (eye watering expensive, 2x the price of the Tintin yellow set), there is just too much brilliant art in the Asterix series that making it smaller is nothing short of disrespectful. Tintin is amazing too but its art is able to hold up in a smaller format, there isn't too much fine texture and depth to notably compress, and it's still over 2/3 the original size anyway. The font format though... I'm worried about that.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 года назад +1

      Those are excellent points and I think you've reasoned it out really well, especially given the price difference you mention! When the box originally launched, I don't think that was the gap, it was maybe closer to 30 dollars. The only thing I would say is that collecting the books individually may not be as expensive, depending on where you are. I completely agree that Asterix would suffer even more, as would many comics that feature finer details, but for me even the larger spaces, machinery, vehicles, and landscapes of Tintin get affected by the size reduction, and, as you suspect, the new, already-slim font isn't done any favours.
      Of course as soon as we have all made our decisions and our purchases, they'll release a full-sized hardcover box set, won't they? 😋

    This is so frustrating! All the box sets are absolutely gorgeous to look at, but as you say, they are smaller in size than the original albums, plus that
    Tintin in Congo is excluded from the box sets currently in print. Not to mention that there are several versions of that particular book, so it's possible
    that the uncensored version isn't even in the out of print box set! Sigh. All I want is EVERY Tintin adventure in the original size, in a nice presentable
    box set. Hardcover editions would be nice, but I'd settle for paperback as long as everything was included...

      By the last missing story do you mean Tintin and the Alph -Art, the story Herge never got to finish? Or did you mean Tintin in the Congo, the second Tintin adventure? If Congo, it's a book that has a lot of problematic depictions in racial caricatures and stereotypes, as well as animal cruelty and other behavior that today is not at all looked upon kindly. It is still available separately from Casterman for collectors and scholars but left out of current box sets from Egmont and Little Brown, who are probably pitching their collections to children and other new readers.

      The first 9 albums were originally in black and white and used a looser, more 'primitive' style (which many prefer, actually). Eight of them (barring Soviets) were later recoloured and most redrawn by Herge and his collaborators to match the style and level of detail of his later albums.
