Thanks for the feedback and for watching. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the rights to show more footage. The movie comes out tomorrow for digital download, though, so perhaps worth watching along when it comes out.
Yeah would be amazing if they could show their sessions, isolating the tracks they are describing. The best part of the video was the part where Chris showed the door hinge, and then we saw a clip of the film with K-2SO where we clearly heard that sound.
" We were challenged to make sound so I worked on the sound so the sound can work with star wars but the sounds throughout the film were recorded as sounds that we worked on. Great legacy of sound"
Lack of actual work and just talking heads is a missed opportunity to see these great artists at work. Check out the Episode 2 Sound Design video for a real behind the scenes look at Star Wars sound.
I had the Walrusman figure in 1978-79. He was somewhat late to the collection but I had him, and the abandoned droids in the hull, had those too. Eventually they all succumbed to firecrackers and other such explosions. Destruction. Excellent film quality, top notch production, only the best from SOS. You guys rock.
Great video. Always love hearing and seeing behind the scenes footage. Would loved to have seen more footage of the actual capturing / creating of the sounds.
The only area where the Disney Era Star Wars films have utterly succeeded in every way is in the technical areas such as cinematography, sound, production design, etc. No complaints there whatsoever.
Great feature here! Would have loved to get some more technical insight on how they process sounds, though. I'd love to know if they mostly rely on plug-ins now or if they still do a lot of work outside the box or in Kyma.
Seems like most of the processing is in the box. As they mention in the vid, they use Soundminer and also mention using Waves Vitamin, iZotope RX and Native Instruments Absynth.
Great content, but awful slow and low on example VT. Could easily cut this to 22mins to give it a bit more oompah. Very honest interviewees, so great interviewer too. xx
10:18 what do they do with a giant Wacom graphic tablet ? I mean, they certainlly don't draw on it so they just use it as a touch screen ! That seems overkill.
good feature but it is essentially nerds talking sound and it is also very boring without THE sounds they're talking about. Keep them coming and improving
"Incredible when it comes to film sound." Not the most eloquent. I'd call it "iconic" and "instantly recognizable, down to the subconscious level" as well as "absolutely distinct."
chemical element 120 the most heavy built a planet artificial exoplanet ice and snow primary structures sith language terrabuilding iridium density or property of expansion volume stone looks likes atomic explosion but in matter and not energy "the reverse collapse
How odd. Real sound editors show off their work. They demonstrate it, play with it for the camera, provide examples of how they make the sounds. But these people just talk. Their moment in the sun, I get that. But come on.
well, 33 minutes talking about the sound, but no actual examples.... It's like talking about editing techniques, but not showing actual examples, so people can observe all the mystery and work of art behind all of this..
LMAO @ "order on DVD/digital download"... really SOS? Who the hell watches "DVD" anymore aside from my senior citizen mother..? Blu Ray/digital odwnload FTW!!!
If i was a studio I would have built a sound library over the years with terabytes of 100,000s of sounds. Everytime a movie needs made the studio wouldnt have to record sound FX for everything all over again. I get that you need new sounds for some things but holy shit. the amounts of sounds they re-record seems redundant and a waste of time
For aspiring sound designers like myself its very interesting, given the fact we know what they're talking about. Foley and sound design is much much much harder to do than people think. You have to become a well-rounded audio engineer first before you can even think about working in sound for film. It takes years and years to learn to do at a professional level, longer than it takes to be an accomplished vfx artist, a lot longer. People with opinions like yourself is why these guys are so under-apprieciated and why their names are always way way down the credit roll.
I love watching behind the scenes footage, especially when it comes to SW but christ what a boring featurette this was. Aside from the dull showing at 7:55 you didn't show any of the interview subjects performing their craft, not even the foley artists. Instead, this was little more than people ruminating about their work. This was so lazily executed that no one even turned around to play the effects they were talking about from the sound logs on their computers, only facing camera the whole time. This video could have been print only and nothing would've been missed. Whoever put it together needs to stick to print material or learn how to produce better video content. It's a craft that requires some effort and a little direction. Not just dropping a camera in front of people and hoping for the best.
There were so many awkward moments... TFA felt so much more natural. TFA flowed as well as any other Star Wars movie I have ever seen. TFA looked good, felt good and all of the actors had good timing and comic sense. Rogue One was visually stunning, but that was ALL it had.
I completely disagree. But interested to hear why you think that.. TFA felt like a tribute act to me.. It started off great.. As soon as the Falcon came in it got really weird. With soo many awkward moments like like.. 'I thought he was a myth'.. 'Your father Han Solo' 'It was Snoke that did it, i shouldn't of let him go away..".. Completely felt unnatural and forced in the movie. The pacing was ridiculous. It made the galaxy seem tiny. Like they couldn't go 2 minutes without some octopus kanja crew monster turning up. Then the first order can literally jump across the galaxy in a matter of like seconds. There was no emotional investment in anything really. Like when they destroy like 10 planets.. Also stupid things like the 'lightsaber calls to you'. Since when did that happen? With Rogue one you get a real sense that actually somethings on the line.. Which is weird because you know what happens. You can see the internal struggles and you see the rebellion doing pretty bad stuff.. You understand the motives of the characters even if they weren't that developed...
I liked this movie, but did not love it. I loved TFA. Emotional investment? Han Solo murdered... and by his own son? There was nothing in Rogue One that I even felt remotely emotional about, other than the great visuals.
SOS thank you for taking the time to put this together, and for free no less.
DITTO!
Fine interviews; was hoping to hear more sounds and see their creative process in action.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the rights to show more footage. The movie comes out tomorrow for digital download, though, so perhaps worth watching along when it comes out.

great opportunity for someone to take this video and edit it with some relevant clips & audio and remove some of the more boring interview parts.
Yeah, this isn't the droning we were looking for.
For aspiring sound designers its informative and gives insight in how to approach a project. Can see how could be boring for a non soundie.

Interesting but would love to have heard the sounds accompany their interviews.
Excellent stuff! Thanks again for the great work Sound On Sound!
Too bad this interview about the sounds in the movie features hardly any sounds. Kind of missed the mark.
I agree! It's weird that the video offers practically no audio cues. I'm forced to give it a thumb down despite the interviews (which weren't bad).
BJUUUUUNNB PEN BABUM TGHHHHHJJJJD PPPPPTEWWWW I HOPE IT HELPS
LOL
you are CORRECT
Yep, I thought the same thing. Kept thinking "oh, the sounds will come in a minu.... oh, nope...".
Great video. Always love hearing and seeing behind the scenes footage. Would loved to have seen more footage of the actual capturing / creating of the sounds.
A little lacking on the "sounds" but loved that about K-2's motor being just that guy's door motor
Great! You should have a whole series of episodes like this. Thank you!
Thanks SOS!
that thing about the "clacky" marching is just like layering kicks...I'm so inspired
inspiring discussions from industry professionals - looking forward to re-watching with new ears!
Superb interviews. Thank you very very much for sharing the insight, all of you involved! Intensely interesting.
Beautiful and purple love it all
Hmm... "Vader, Vader, respirator... " yes, there IS an intrinsic connection!! :)
Easter Egg: Sam Witwer is a rebel voice over in the Vader corridor scene.
Nice. What a treat. :)
Really inspirational. Thank You!
I respect sound engineers so much more now
they totally flubbed on the sound of the Tie-Fighters which i thought was weird as they have such a distinctive and universally loved sound
very interesting!
this is better content than what is on the Blu Ray of rogue one.skip the Blu Ray. wait for the collectors edition.
The only area where the Disney Era Star Wars films have utterly succeeded in every way is in the technical areas such as cinematography, sound, production design, etc. No complaints there whatsoever.
This would have been awesome to have on the Bonus Features disc. 😛
would have been nice to hear some sounds

damn he's a slow talker
Wish it would have shown more of the early stage voices and sounds rather than just talking about it
Great content, but awful slow and low on example VT. Could easily cut this to 22mins to give it a bit more oompah. Very honest interviewees, so great interviewer too. xx

"Incredible when it comes to film sound." Not the most eloquent. I'd call it "iconic" and "instantly recognizable, down to the subconscious level" as well as "absolutely distinct."
The Sound of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with no sounds....
kind of an out of body experience to see a $1600 drawing tablet being used as a display for pro tools, I wonder what the logic behind that is
Indeed, first sound example after 8 minutes talking...
Love Sound On Sound videos usually, but this one failed a little.

Why would you keep this from the rest of the world?
okeribok you're not going to show you because they got proprietary patent copyright as to how they did it that's why
Sound designers have interesting jobs. But when they talk about it in front of a camera, it's so boring, i want to put a gun in my mouth.

Dump Disney
Fire Bob Chapek

For a video about sounds, this one lacks them a lot. You should show us the sounds these people are talking about, and not make us search for it.
well, 33 minutes talking about the sound, but no actual examples.... It's like talking about editing techniques, but not showing actual examples, so people can observe all the mystery and work of art behind all of this..
Yeah - an opportunity missed - boring talk and little audio.
LMAO @ "order on DVD/digital download"... really SOS? Who the hell watches "DVD" anymore aside from my senior citizen mother..? Blu Ray/digital odwnload FTW!!!
"Clack track" and other examples should have been played for context in that moment. Way too much talking for this to be a Sound Design video.

Very boring!!!!! The BLA BLA Sound of Rouge One
Jesus Christ. I've seen slow motion footage of grass growing that's more interesting than this.

Talking all the time about the sound and not listening to anything is a little boring.
Jee whizz this lot are so boring to listen to...Where's the passion and excitement?.. are they all depressed?

All talk and no sound. pointless.
More examples less talking please
Talking a bit fast for my taste.
These people take themselves WAY to seriously.
This movie was visually interesting, but the acting, timing, and plot were insanely bad...
whatttt. miles better than TFA in all 3 of those.. (maybe not acting) Although Krennic, Mads and K2 were above most of the performances in TFA.
There were so many awkward moments... TFA felt so much more natural. TFA flowed as well as any other Star Wars movie I have ever seen. TFA looked good, felt good and all of the actors had good timing and comic sense. Rogue One was visually stunning, but that was ALL it had.
Oh and the musical score was horrendous as well...
