      @@UrielX1212 That's the secret to a successful SW offering: watching our beloved characters at their prime doing something awesome. Nobody wants to see a bratty Darth Vader or decrepit Luke. Save your heart rending character developments/twists for the new characters.

    • @UrielX1212
      @UrielX1212 3 года назад +3

      @@LizardSpork Their prime was 30 years ago. Trying to resurrect them now is like going to the graveyard and attempting to resurrect the dead. The CGI reconstruction of Leia and Tarkin is just comical and highlights this fallacy. The Star Wars universe is tiny in that it seemingly cannot exist without characters developed back in those years gone by. They never did what they did in, say, Star Trek and create brand new characters in brand new places. Even the new failed prequel trilogy keeps trying to bring back the past. I mean for petes sake no one needs to see Carrier Fisher after years of cocaine abuse or Mark Hamill after years of...whatever the hell turned him into a toolshed. The problem is the Star Wars fans that get a hard on when some CGI piece of crap imitation of Darth Vader fires up a lightsaber. What a useless lot.
      Rejecting most of the expanded universe has made Star Wars a dying husk of a franchise. The sequel tribology finished it off IMO although the Mandalorian has breathed a few embers into it (Of course they had to have fucking Luke Skywalker come back...Jesus Wept).

    • @LizardSpork
      @LizardSpork 3 года назад +3

      @@UrielX1212 I'm not saying Luke or Han are the only things people should want to see. The success of the Mandalorian isn't carried by Luke showing up at the end the same way R1 wasn't carried by Darth Vader hallway scene even if that turned out to be the most memorable (personally the Battle of Scariff was worth the price of admission alone and this was just the cherry on top).
      You can call their presence pandering or fan service, I prefer to think of it as a tribute and a fitting one since they happened in the same time and aren't out of place. Hell a lot of the extended universe involve the main cast in one way or the other so a Rogue Squadron movie will include them tangentially anyway.

      I must disagree with this, sadly: _Rogue One_ is full of cardboard characters (I cared more about the blind dude than Jyn, who's basically an emotionless flat cutout being used as a tool for most of the movie), makes Leia looks like a complete and utter moron (what was the _point_ of being with the fleet, and what was the point of lying to Vader?), makes _Vader_ looks like a complete (hunchbacked) moron (the only reason _Tantive IV_ was able to escape was because he wasted time standing dramatically in the dark corridor), and introduces several plot holes (like, for example, Rebels knowing about the weak point here, but being blissfully unaware of it in _A New Hope_ until the plans have been analyzed).

    Filming multiple takes with characters giving different emotion isn’t uncommon and many actors can handle it fine. It only tends to be an issue with “method” actors who think their character can only be one certain way. It’s not like directors are saying “this time film it with a clown nose and standing on your head”. It’s usually small emotion changes aka “be more scared of Vader in this one, okay now be more angry and defiant”.

    This film is by FAR the best film in the new Star Wars "era". Want to know why? Gareth Edwards is a TRUE Star Wars fan. The poor guy visited Tunisia and lived in the underground hotel to live life like Luke Skywalker for his birthday vacation. This guy is the biggest Star Wars fan and nerd I've ever heard of. The CG is AMAZING and TOPS TFA and TLJ. It looks and pays homage to the original trilogy and the very real models they used to film the space battles. Funnily enough, they used ACTUAL physical models and then scanned them to do a 50/50 of CG and the use of real modeled mini ships to pay respects to the OT and to also closely replicate it. I am STILL mad that Gareth Edwards isn't coming back to do more films.

    I'm quite analytical, enjoy the craft of film and practical in my thinking so I spotted many flaws with this movie on my initial watch and the missing footage. And I can see why they had some "cool trailer lines" that worked in the trailers so well. BUT......I cannot remember enjoying a Star Wars film in the cinema as much as this since my dad brought me to the re released originals as an 8/9 year old where my love for this series began. Years later as an adult with a love of movies and cinematography, seeing the love poured into this as with the 70s moustaches on some pilots, the ship models and cutting in of old footage was just grin inducing. So none of these things bothered me like they often would when watching a film for the first time. The score was perfect too - when the X wings emerge from hyperspace (that bit looks just stupid good too) and the music when Blue Leader blows up the AT-ACT just send chills down me anytime I listen to the score on its own.
    I think JJ loves Star Wars as much as any of us and you could see the love he put in to do it justice too but he was dealt a bad hand after TFA (imo TFAs plot was the right call even if it is unoriginal) and love doesn't always lead to the best outcome but Rogue One may just be my favourite Star Wars. We need more like it. Edwards eye for scale is so well suited too. Is the Cassian series on D+ still happening?

And it was. It fits perfectly with chapters 4-6. Chapters 1-3 are rambling, drawn out affairs. Chapters 7-9 are warmed over casseroles made from bits and pieces of 1-3 with a pinch of chapters 4-6. Result? Messy space operas in too many acts.
    I was disappointed in the the ending of Rogue One. The characters were likable to cheer for and they acted gallantly and bravely. There is an untold story of what they would have contributed to the battle against the Empire but it will be left to the imagination for each viewer who wanted the story to go on.

Let me repeat that: IT IS NOT A PLOT HOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have heard this more than once over the years from people who think they know what they are talking about. THEY DON’T!! The definition of a plot hole, quoted directly from Wikipedia is: Learn more
    “In fiction, a plot hole, plothole or plot error is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story's plot.[1] Such inconsistencies include things as illogical, unlikely or impossible events,[2] and statements or events that contradict earlier events in the storyline. The term is more loosely also applied to "loose ends" in a plot - side-lined story elements that remain unresolved by the end of the plot.” The way to destroy the Death Star DOES NOT fit that definition.

    Random takes of actors and shots doing or saying things with no context forcing me the editor to figure it out once I get the footage. The prime example of a director who has no real vision for his characters and what he wants to do with this story so it’s up to me the editor to find the vision for him! And if I’m successful he takes all the credit!
    Case in point, no wonder there where so many reshoots and post-production problems.

      @Emilia Barzini it implies preference to the original trilogy, which can matter when comparing opinions. I see that, and I think they generally like 4-6 more than 1-3 (although some put 3 above 6) and 7-8 (with 7 somewhere between). Assuming similar taste in which SW movies are favored makes it more likely we'd have a similar reaction to RO as they would, if we've yet to see it.

    • @jasonh7128
      @jasonh7128 5 лет назад +2

      @Emilia Barzini the fact that it's subjective is kinda the point though. If someone tells me TLJ and Solo were their favorite SW movies, I'm less likely to want to see their other favorites, as opposed to an "old fan" that likes Empire more. But that's just my take on it. Maybe rebelworks will have a different explanation for why it matters. Either way, I'm not sure why it was important enough to bring up in the first place. I was just explaining how it might relate to an opinion.

      Last Jedi? I know some people enjoy Johnson’s directorial choice to “do the opposite of what was expected” but at what cost lol. It’s not as though it had twists and surprises, it still did what was expected but in a boring way. Snoke was a massively wasted character. The choreography in the throne room fight had a lot of mistakes, which in this day and age is unforgivable. This isn’t 1970s cinema anymore. That opening scene was fraught with ridiculous choices by the characters. Luke’s arc was odd and shitty. Too many things didn’t connect from force awakens and last Jedi, or when they did the payoff was lackluster. As far as things that didn’t matter yes the side mission with finn and rose was torture and her absolutely silly crash into Finn and subsequent love speech felt so forced it was painful. Even if someone defends the reasons for all of these choices, in the end it’s a movie, it has to be entertaining in either and action sense or an emotional one. It was the first Star Wars movie I watched where I couldn’t get into any of it. Think about how insane and silly the entire plot was, running out of fuel? Chasing ships but can’t catch up? Not telling poe the plan and causing a mutiny that could’ve gotten everyone killed? Rogue one didn’t hit on every decision but I was intrigued the entire time. The desire to save a lost parent and understand why your life went the way it did is interesting. It has engaging characters that were true to their personalities. CGI and effects and battles were phenomenal. Those At At walkers roaming the beaches blew my mind. Even the Vader scene which can be called pandering was awesome. Again I understand it’s just opinion but it isn’t a coincidence that many people enjoyed rogue and mannyy people disliked last jedi. I’m just bummed out beyond belief bc they had a shot to bring an amazing story into focus in a new era while closing out the old characters in a unique way honoring their past. Instead we got what... a random person doing those just to do it. And the old characters not done justice. To each their own but not for me.

      @mbnhiphopmusik6429 5 лет назад

      what bar (edit: Not the ones you would think of when thinking of SW movies, but the one about being actually good, even without the ip)? It just did not care to do what the other Star Wars movies did, it was a movie that would have worked just by itself as well, and that is why I think it is so good. tfa and tlj kinda break SW in a way (new death star? seriously? hyperspace ramming? dafuq?!?) and solo simply was fan service for the sake of fan service and did not do anything to the character because the character development was undone off screen to get Han Solo as he is in ANH.

    • @mbnhiphopmusik6429
      @mbnhiphopmusik6429 5 лет назад +1

      @ Well, it ain't the only one... Star Trek Discovery has the same issue, just not that bad (or worse?). Makes one wonder, how did anyone in the management (those should be people educated about marketing and knowledgeable about what makes certain ips popular) allow that to happen?
      What I meant is that it did not set any bar that one would have thought of or actively tried to. It just did not have to care about setting a bar but cared about being good.
      Who woulda thought that the spin off is better than any movie of the main trilogy? Nobody, and after tfa released only those that were super pissed about it just throwing up questions. Then R1 did not care to be a good Star Wars movie, if you look at what makes Star Wars good, you will not find a lot of it in there imho. However that might actually be what made R1 great. It is more inspired by war movies than by the other SW movies and in the end it is the only movie to really put the "Wars" into Star Wars.

      SNOOPALOOP Because it doesn’t follow continuity.
      let’s see, where to start?
      The opening crawl states that the Rebels had won their first victory, but rogue one show a complete and utter defeat.
      The method in which Princess Leia gets the Death Star plans; Darth Vader himself says clearly, “where are the transmissions you intercepted?” And later, “Don’t act so surprised your highness, you weren’t on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies.” Well, first, rogue one clearly shows that Leia’s ship didn’t intercept the transmission of the Death Star plans so the plans were never beamed to her ship. In addition, Darth Vader is telling us that Leia’s cover for being in the area of the transmission was being on a mercy mission, but there is no mercy mission in rogue one, for some convoluted reason Leia’s ship is hiding inside a Rebel Cruiser, not exactly a covert mission, is it? They might as well wear a sign saying “hey we’re Rebels. Come and chase us.”
      Also, the plans were not transmitted by Rebel spies, hell, the plans were not even stolen by Rebel spies.
      Darth Vader exclaims that he “traced the Rebel spies to her” how exactly? Pretty hard to do any detective work when everybody was vaporized into atoms.
      Next; the Death Star flying about and firing its weapon willy-nilly. Since the Imperial conference scene in A New Hope an officer exclaimed, “Until this battle station is fully operational we are vulnerable.” Later, a crewman reports to Tarkin, “the final check out is completed we are now operational. What course shall we set?”
      “Princess Leia, before your execution I would like you to join me in a ceremony that will make this battle station operational.” All of this tells me that the Death Star should not have been at scarif. In fact, it was stupid for it to be there in the first place considering that the Death Star is supposed to be a secret, and Leia gave no indication that she had seen the Death Star before or that she had already seen its fire power prior to the destruction of Alderaan, both of which she was present for in rogue one.
      Plus, I totally disagree with the decision to kill off everybody. In A New Hope there is no indication that the Rebel spies who stole the Death Star plans are either living or dead. Also, if they had all died then they would have been mentioned in A New Hope. Fallen soldiers often get a mention or a memorial, but they get nothing, in fact all of the credit goes to Leia. That means that something completely different had transpired than what was shown in rogue one.
      Jin gave a rousing speech to the Rebels informing them that there is definitely a weakness in the Death Star, however, Leia doesn’t seem privy to this information as she says, “I only hope that when the data is analyzed a weakness can be found.” So, it seems doubly weird that she would refer to the plans as Hope, so cringed and forced. Considering that the next thing she says is, “Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

      @@peterkrochmalni673 Is continuity really your only problem? How about the story, dialogue, action sequences, and the way that it feels like a SW film?

    • @peterkrochmalni673
      @peterkrochmalni673 5 лет назад +3

      Big Warmy The story probably could have been good if it had followed the continuity established in A New Hope maybe if they had followed the Expanded Universe that had everything already written and followed continuity far better than what was filmed.
      Dialogue, meh.
      Action sequences yeah the space battle was okay.
      More like a fan film with bad writing, poor script, lifeless and boring actors. And killing off all of the characters does not feel like a Star Wars story, there’s no reason to rewatch it.
      And the aforementioned continuity errors.
      So, basically rogue one is all visuals with no story, no characters, and no connection to the first movie.

      @@peterkrochmalni673 Haha wow, you just sound bitter. I despise TLJ and didn't really like TFA, but Rogue One was a great Star Wars film in my opinion. It was gritty, like the originals. The Force Awakens will always be one of my favorite, not only cause I like it but it's the first SW movie I've watched in theaters. Episode 8 was about as good but I thought it could've been handled better in some scenes. Solo was a very good yet unnecessary film: loved the message, the execution and several other variables were very satisfying to see, I just didn't like all the references that were packed into it(kessel run, millennium Falcon, etc). Rogue One's first two acts were very interesting but at the same time underwhelming. I never got engaged with Jyn or the other characters and this watered down my overall experience. I was lit up like a boy when Vader showed up, and with Leia.
