    Daly is truly one of golf's all time most naturally talented players to ever pick up the sticks. Tiger is also one of the all time most naturally talented players but in addition to that, like Michael Jordan and Jerry Rice, he has an competitive nature that is basically borderline obessive. It is what has driven him to be what many consider to be the GOAT, like Mike and Jerry in their respective sports.

      Naturally talented Tiger? I guess the 2000 ball morning drill for most of his life had nothing to do with it...right genius?

    • @16-bit-trip5
      @16-bit-trip5 6 лет назад +4

      Bud, no need to be a dick. Of course all that practice got Tiger to where he is however it wasn't just the practice nor was it just his talent. It was the combination of both plus his competitive drive (which is what gave him the mental fortitude to do all that practice). Plenty of people could go through all the training and practice Tiger did but that but that's not going to make them competitive pro golfers let alone one of the greatest to ever play the game. Look at Vijay Singh, he work ethic was also crazy and he was also successful but he's no Tiger or Jack or Phil. What separates Vijay from those better than him is natural ability.

      1994 BellSouth Classic
      1995 The Open Championship

    As a life long golfer, scratch player and historian of the sport, I would advise those who don't fully understand the game to be careful before they diss John Daly. When he says "natural talent" that is in no way insinuating that he is a comparable player. In fact, he is dissing himself bc he didn't work to develop that talent, Tiger did. Tiger, I believe, reached the highest peak the game of golf has ever know between the years 2000-2008. Jack, however, had the greatest career.

    I like Tiger woods and he was an incredible golfer. Tiger had natural talent however his talent was developed through a steadfast and determined approach to the game. He was mentally very strong and practiced a lot.. He needed that determination to be the best. John Daly was often hung over, tired, or drunk while playing golf. His natural talent afforded him to be so good despite not practicing much, and not being especially determined and focused. He had a lot of natural talent that was never fully realized due to his lifestyle. This is my opinion- Tiger was an all around better golfer but John had more natural talent for the game. Could he have played as well as Tiger if he wasn't such a slush ? I tend to think he could have..

      MORE natural talent than Tiger!? No. John Daly was very physically talented but not to that extent. His talent would be more on the level of a Lawson Little, a Tommy Bolt, a Fuzzy Zoeller, a Ray Floyd (who developed a strong work ethic after he got married), or an Ernie Els. Players such as Tiger, Nicklaus, Snead, and Bobby Jones stand out as the most physically gifted to me, and if I had to name one more it would probably be Byron Nelson who seemed to have a great inborn gift for the game.

  • @GuessTechSports

    John Daly had a LOT of natural talent. Obviously so does Tiger. Daly didn't 'work' at his game,.. what you saw out of him was what he had from just playing the game.. period. So he got through Q school (not easy.. ) and won majors on the tour on basically sheer talent alone. He was known for a powerful drive and his short game and putting were on or off.. his wins came when all were 'on' of course. Tiger on the other hand had as much or more talent naturally but had the work ethic to mold that talent into what we saw in his peak. Tiger opened up the world of golf to A LOT of people.. and he still brings in the viewers and crowds despite his game being inconsistent (hopefully he can muster more wins). I still think Tiger at his peak and any other 'great' at their peak were not equal. In other words, I think Tiger is the greatest golfer to ever live.. his peak merely didn't last as long as the other greats and he fell off the map. Now Tiger has a 'chance' to get back to form but he's had a lot of hurdles to get through to get to this point and I think he's "Okay" if he never wins consistently again. Though I believe I speak for all of us when I say .. I hope he does go on another 'tear' of wins before he's out of an age to compete with the best of the best.

      GuessTechSports natural talent is a phrase that people use to feel better about not achieving what they wanted. It’s an easy scapegoat to believe that people are naturally good at something vs. them working intelligently deliberately at becoming better.

  • @tmoney7643
    @tmoney7643 5 лет назад +2

    The only way to really evaluate it is to ask... If John practiced and dedicated himself the way Tiger did/does, would he be as good or better? IMO, the answer is still No. On the other end, if Tiger took up John's lifestyle and didn't take great care of himself, drank a lot, didn't practice very often, and played hung over... would he be as good or better than John? IMO, the answer is No. Natural Talent is subjective to what variables are in play. Prime example, I'm willing to bet John is a better golfer than Tiger if they were to play drunk (being serious - we all know John plays/has played a lot of golf while drunk.)

      How sincere is it to tell a guy that you're routinely beating, that his talent is superior to your own? Let's turn Tiger's comment around and see if it makes more sense: 'If you had my talent (consistently winning) you'd be doing the same thing I do, (practicing all the time).' On the other hand, if Tiger actually thought Daly had more natural potential talent than his own, he'd be foolish to encourage him to work harder. I'm willing to split the difference, and figure Tiger was saying both things at the same time. The down side to always swinging a club like a monster is that it jacks up your back, and Tiger jacked his up. Finally, if I had to choose which one I'd like to play a round with, Daly, or Woods, I'd pick Daly. Daly is an approachable guy, while Tiger seems to be aloof.

    • @billtruttschel
      @billtruttschel 5 лет назад +2

      I think you got it wrong. Tiger was implicitly making a distinction between natural talent and refined skill. Tiger was essentially saying Daly had a lot of natural talent while Tiger felt it necessary to hone his skill lest he be at the bottom of the pack.

  • @MrJunior82006
    @MrJunior82006 2 года назад

    Saying someone like Daly, which I love btw so I’m not bashing him has more natural talent than literally the greatest golfer that’s ever lived in my opinion, at worst #2 is absurd. Tiger was just being nice trying to decline a drink when he said that let’s be real….like I said I love him, but John coulda beat balls all day long and been in the gym 3 hours a day and it still wouldn’t come close to making up the talent gap between a 5 time PGA tour winner with a couple majors in pre-Tiger era 90’s golf lacking any big stars at the time and an 82 time PGA tour winner with 15 majors. Stats and results combined don’t lie in sports ppl.

    so if daly practiced 8 hours a day and was on the range 6 days a week and had the same results would his "Natural" talent be diminished? i don't get this argument. one guy has 79 pga tour wins with 14 being majors and the other has 5 pga tour wins with 2 being majors. even daly said himself he can't hit 300/400 balls a day on the range like these other guys do, it doesn't benefit him at all (probably because he's out of shape TBH). i think it's ridiculous to even put JD in the same breath regarding talent with tiger.

      That was/is Tiger's problem....It is not really about having a "better swing", I am not even sure exactly what that means, it is about being able to consistently reproduce the swing you have. I have seen many very talented golfers get caught up in the minutiae of what other people think is the "correct" golf swing and destroy their game. Hell, Tiger did it to himself after winning the US Open by 15 strokes in 2002....He used 3 different swing coaches over a several year period to change his swing. Sure he still had a lot of success after that process but he was not the same dominant player and it started his constant struggles with his driver. He was the most dominant player in the world yet he was still searching for that elusive "perfect swing".

    Longevity counts. Tiger is washed up. John D is still playing and winning.

      Joseph, either you really dislike Woods or doesn't know the history of John as a PGA golfer to make such a statement.

      Joseph Gibbons, if you think Tiger is the only pro who committed adultery, you're fooling yourself. If you're a student and fan of the game, you should be able to appreciate his talent and golfing accomplishments without confusing that with the man's personal life. I would think lesser golfing stars don't receive the same scrutiny as the top talent. Good day.

    John Daly's talent? What biggest drunk in the PGA's history? I did love his comparison of himself to Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino...he couldn't be more different from those three. Ok, he may be like them if you take out their success, talent, commitment, dedication, and attitude maybe then he's comparable.

      He did not compare himself to Nicklaus.....Also what he was trying to reference was the approach to playing the game. The guys he compared himself to were notorious for being "fun" guys that liked to hang out and have drinks with their friends and not spend countless hours banging balls on the range. Nicklaus was not that guy at all, he was more like your Tigers, Faldos, Singhs of world who would spend countless hours practicing and really did not hang out with the other guys on Tour much.

    The greatest winners in any field, be it academic, sports, finance, music, business, etc, tend to be relentlessly obsessive and meticulous at whatever their interest is. That's what makes them successful/winners. The rest tinker and hope that success happens somehow. WINNERS like TIGER believe it will happen and obessively go all the way for it. That's the difference between the 25year greatest golfing success by Tiger, winning 82 PGA tournaments, compared to John Daly's moderate success. TW and JD are very different people, very different personalities,/qualities, goals and achievement objectives. Only thing in common is golf, but even then, they are leagues apart. To compare them is unfair to both. Each to their own. Just no comparison between TW's HUGE golf success and achievements to those of JD. The JD request to share a beer was a tongue in cheek! I am sure in his heart of hearts JD wishes every day that he had TW's golf skills and success!
