The game states that these musicians in Mae's dream were called The Deep Hollow Hollerers, they were a band that died in the freezing cold of a blizzard. They seemed to play the songs they loved to the people they cared about and now do it to seemingly calm the ghosts of the afterlife. Which i think is beautiful and selfless in my eyes. It brings me comfort, sadness, and heartwarming nostalgia
So, Mei way listening to a band of spirits in her dreams? That sounds all of haunting, sad, peculiar and heartwarming at the same time. That technically means that these ghosts were entering Mei’s dreams and she therefore might be an exorcist. @@coolsceegaming6178 This song, even when I first heard it, gave me a strong feeling. Now when I hear it, it makes me cry. The Saxophone makes me think of someone making a long hard climb. Combined Acordian makes me think things are getting harder and more treacherous. The Tuba makes me think of someone bumbling through life blind. THEN! They add in the violin and the tears just start falling from my eyes. The violin makes me think of someone traveling a vast distance and seeing wonderful sights. I always get the feeling that they are on a train watching the hills and fields fly past because when I think of a violin played in that style I think of the countryside and I think travel and I think train.
I do think this track pretty much as a poetry: The 4 musicians represents mae and her friends, and their individual and combined music is a metaphor of their relationships and psycology: 13:28 mae's the violin: like when she went to college when she's alone she's sad and depressed 1:41 bea is the Accordion, she completes the violin's music diligently filling the gaps in its the music 2:15 gregg is the sax, their music combined is exuberant but can also go really slow, giving both the pace and time they need without worrying, just like true friends can do 12:48 angus is the horn, both calm and reassuring, and also connected to the sax by the metaphor of being the only 2 wind instruments 4:08 altough the music they produce individually can feel sad when they are all together it feels joyful also, the sounds in the background (the bells) represent the outside, the so called "night in the woods" (wich is a metaphor in itself), not by chance, in fact, the background sounds have a nocturnal vibe
Same with the spirit animals in a way, people thought Gregg was a squirrel when he clearly is a fox. I believe it's more a spiritual connection. Bea is cold like an alligator, Angus is docile and peaceful, but also strong like a bear. Gregg is hyper and rambunctious like a squirrel, not entirely sure how Mae connects to the bird that appears of if she is even connected to that animal at all, it could be symbolic of Germ Warfare who is considered the 5th friend in a lot of fanart and promotional art in the game being with Mae, Gregg, Bea and Angus a lot of the time.
Jesus do I love this game more than anything. The characters, The music, The lore... Everything. It really makes you feel bad, It makes you laugh, or hurt even. I hope I could create a game- just as good as this.
I found the game to be very "Meh". Bea's constant downer attitude was extremely irritating and how she felt like she was the only one who had problems and wrote Mae off as being stupid and childish. The ending was also very disappointing, makes me feel like they're setting up to a sequel game.

This has honest to god be my favorite track in the game, even worthy of being in my top 10 favorite VG tracks EVER. I completed the game less than a week ago and I had to re-listen to this song after finishing the game. I'm glad this build-up version exists because it's a much better listening experience as it is in game, and this build up very much replicates that to an extent. Not many tracks from video games are able to bring me to literal tears, I'm very glad this was able to be part of that small fraction of tracks that do. Every single one of the instrument groups are good on their own, but when all played in unison, they really create this feeling like no other. The Violin almost gives this sense of sadness and grief, but at the same time a feeling of acceptance and moving on. The Accordion has this feeling of warmth and lightheartedness, as well as something astronomical in size. The Saxophone represents a feeling of overcoming great odds. And the Tuba, it represents strength and determination. And the percussion, it really ties it all in together for this absolutely magical feeling. Now, all of what I just said might be some bullshit, I can't really fully convey how I feel about each individual one with words, but all in all, the music simple invokes great and powerful emotions in me. It makes me feel sad and happy at the same time, like things are changing, the past is gone and things will never be the same again, but that's ok.
Honestly, I view these build ups as the proper way of listening to the astral songs, they just bring out the best in them and make them sound even more beautiful. Thank you so much for dedicating your time to do this.
Why does the violin part make me miss my past? Does anyone else feel this? I start missing people that I don't see anymore and reminiscing about old times spent with them. I can see old places in my mind and smell old smells. It's like the ghosts of those people are sitting beside me reminiscing with me. It makes me happy but also sad and fills me with a sense of longing that I can't fix.
Part of me agrees with you. I think the violin is the obvious heart of it, which is why I tried to put off its debut as long as possible without it getting actually frustrating. I may well have waited to long.

The thing I noticed about the song, when I first heard it, is just how much it changes! I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice. You have your foundation, that is your Tuba. They give the basics, but without it then it just seems wrong. You can have the melody which the Violin plays, it's the star of the show. But then you need the accompaniment which is the accordion and sax. Such a beautiful piece. And yes the violin does add more towards the song, I think every instrument plays an amazing part. With the violin alone you have just the melody, which albeit is amazing, can be repetitive without much else.
Favourite combo, just to throw it out there, would definitely be all three minus the violins, without the band(s). So, that's... 0:38. IDK... It's really... magisterial, official, grand, and still a bit sad.
