    ABOUT PRETTY SHOULDN'T HURT
"Pretty Shouldn't Hurt" is a short film we created in partnership with Dark & Lovely that challenges the hairstyling practices that have led to hair loss in over a third of Black women. Taking a pain reliever after getting your hair done is not normal, and the notion that braids have to be tight in order to be secure is a myth that needs to be dispelled. We’ve grown up believing ‘the tighter the better’ when it comes to braided hairstyles, and as a result, today’s generation of Black women have seen their moms, aunts, grandmas and even friends lose their hairlines.
    OUR MISSION
We’re setting out to eliminate pain from the Black hair styling experience and reduce the rate of thinning and hair loss due to improper styling methods and to do this we're enlisting the support of 100 of the most vocal and influential players in the Black hairstyling industry, including experts featured in the film-natural hairstyling pioneer, Anu Prestonia, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Crystal Aguh, Celebrity Hairstylist & Trichologist, Dr. Kari Williams, and Emmy-nominated celebrity stylist and Dark & Lovely Ambassador, Derick Monroe--all in an effort to create and promote a new standard in taking care of protective styles like box braids, cornrows, wigs, weaves and crochets.

I had this before and it actually almost ruined my hairline. I remember my follicles slowly lifting from my scalp and having to reform another follicle to keep the hair in my head. It was so painful and traumatic. I thought it would get better but it didn’t. Now I do my braids myself and I don’t want anyone else to touch my hair again.

I live in Eastern Europe, crochet hair is a fashion choice here (the society is 99% white, only recently we started to have some representation of other skin colors and cultures, but it's still tiny :(). In my city there is one salon owned by a black lady and her version of truth (sarcasm here) is that "it is supposed to hurt, bumps are normal, if your skin hurts/burns/whatever just use this and that cosmetic". After my first two months with crochet curls I lost so much hair above my forhead :((. Until I watched your video I thought that every single girl with crochet curls goes through this pain and braids pulling out my hair from my scalp are normal.
Thank you so much for recording this!
Btw, I have a question - I know that having crochet curls while being white in the US would be seen as cultural appropriation. Would it still be the case in a part of the world where we didn't have slavery/colonies etc.? I have no one to ask here, the place I had my hair done at is black-person-owned and employs only women of colour and the service is extremely expensive - so I guess their opinion would be that it's not a problem if a white girl has this hairstyle because they make money of it (well, the owner does).
