- Bass virtuoso "Jeff Berlin" stopped by and eventually made Julia play his signature bass. Do you think she has been practicing long enough to convince the fusion and modern jazz bassist?
#thoNAMM20 audio quality is made possible with the support from Izotope and Sennheiser USA.

"Are you a bass player?" Yes and she proved it. Great solo, Julia!
A dream come true! 💚😭
That's an awesome moment!
She's an excellent player, and I've also never heard her sound better than she does on this bass. It's good evidence for Berlin's claim about the quality of his bass model.
Oh goodness me! A legend, a great bass player and also a nice human being, Jeff Berlin, interviewed by another great bass player and nice person, Julia. I wish this was much longer ❤❤
I love Berlin, he engages everyone beautifully, and, in mere seconds, can dispel every bullshit bass myth with simple educational logic.
he hates on metronomes so much on facebook that I had to block him.
It seems to me that Jeff either doesn't know how to use a metronome properly or had bad experiences with it over the years.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Actually, his take on metronomes: you can't practice, with a metronome or drum machine, what you dont know how to play. He gives an example of Gary Burton using one AFTER mastering the mechanics of his instrument, in order to correct certain things he heard. Jeff just used to present it with a confrontational premise. I never understood why people didn't get the actual point. Many a proper educator will present things in a way that is designed to force their students into an uncomfortable position. Would you want a boxing coach that lets you win, rigs your sparring matches, and only shows you what you WANT to learn, for fear of offending you? Law of averages says you'd be drummed out in a competition's qualifying phase with ease, if you made it that far in the first place.
As an educator, if people don't get what you're trying to explain, you either are explaining it wrong or poorly. Not spoon feeding information is one thing. Explaining something in a way that makes people think you are against something when you're not is another. Just go look at any clinic Jeff has done on RUclips and watch how he responds when people ask about practicing with a metronome.
The legend and the future legend.
That harmonics riff was just daaaaamn beautiful😍
Jeff is a REAL musician. I aspire to be like him.
Great playing Julia 👍
When he says that bass is better than fender it can be true:1- for bridge (low action)
2- for bartolini pick-up
3- for ebony fingerboard
4- neck design and and ergonomic body
5- maybe price
Great interview. He is one of the greatest players and educators.
Always good to hear Jeff talk bass playing, love his thoughts on learning.
If Jeff Berlin handed me his bass and asked me to play something, I’d screw up for sure.
I could blah my way out by simply being left-handed.
Blag.
She killed it! Jeff was impressed. Great interview.
I love Jeff. I can feel his love for students of the bass as well as for everyone else. His epiphany wasn't about music but it lives in his playing and teaching.
Every time I watch Jeff play I think to myself he has to be one of the best bassist of all time. Makes it look so easy.
Julia! I liked your approach with one of the masters. I grew up with Jeff...well...even though we lived in different places. Traveling in different areas. Well...Both bass players around the same time. Leave it alone. You did a great job in interviewing and playing. Kudos
Thanks a lot! Most of the credit goes to Jeff who was a perfect interview partner ;)
// Julia
Great interview, probing respectful questions. That's how you get 'Give me the mic!" and a chance to play and discuss together.
On the other hand, typical interviewer asks "What are the new features?" and the sales guy talks fast.
When Julia calls Jeff Berlin beautiful. 🥰
Jeff's work with Bruford gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!
Check him out with Allan Holdsworth and Chad Wackerman on Road Games. Literally, the most technically and creatively perfect bass ever recorded.
Love seeing celebrities who are just generally good people. Always so refreshing. And some great bass talk/playing!
ohhh man that was a great and fun interview. And Jeff Berlin, what a fabulous bass player and a gent
Thank you, thomann! Love this interview!
The interviewer sounded amazing on that bass. Wounderful ghost notes. And of course Jeff is the master. Id love to try on of those cort basses!

// Cheers, Julia
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Thank you ^^ was wondering the same thing
WE REPEAT THE BEAT KEEP THE BEAT
Learn but doing and paying attention if only I could read!😞
I kinda miss Jeff's mustache !
„Are you a Bass-Player?“
Jeff has to make everything sound more complicated than it is haha.
Hadrien Ferraud doesn’t read sheet music ))
But he knows the notes
Indonesia isn't too far from me lol
THAT GIRL MAKE A BEAT
2:57 Nein Julia du bist aus Österreich!
BASS FINGERS
Done forget the UK Jeff
I think Jeff just sold another Cort bass!
Why does he speak to everyone like an ESL student lol
Because they're !
Mr Marmite who blocks anyone who doesn't agree 100% with his "opinions".
He’s looking rough
You can learn scales and theory without learning to read music. His logic is kinda flawed. Great player though!
He started by saying," there's two ways to learn how to play the bass." One being to learn how to read. I hear that listening is also a trait of a competent musician.
@@makichas Yes. Two ways. But he very heavily implies that autodidactic learning is worse, because learning to read music is the only way to understand theory. It is not.
Can't fault him though! And generally most popular music teachers are those who journeyed via sheet music! You don't see self taught players like Mike dirnt, John entwistle teaching bass lessons! If they would, they would probably preach the self taught method too! Not against either, just noticing this trend haha
@@dannellim11 Good point, well made!
@Brett S. That's nice :)
Berlin and his reading music nonsense. Hendrix didn't read music. Learn by ear. Much more important.
He preaches that, too. Gave a series of free YT videos on how to transcribe by ear, learn by ear. Why not go check out his jeff Berlin music group channel? His premise has ALWAYS been this: if you're learning by ear, and that's your goal, you shouldn't have to pay someone to show you licks. I learned by ear, and later studied music both privately and in college. It certainly expanded my viewpoint, and capabilities. I still encounter lots of good " ear only " musicians, but they actually have picked up on useful musical info along the way- some haven't, and they aren't gonna get a call when you need a quick study, or a proper stand in.
Did hendrix play jazz; baroque; fusion?
No. He only played blues...
You do not need to read sheet music to play the blues...
But who cares right? Hendrix is the pinnacle of taste and musicality, right?
@@HigherGroundCC you're throwing a weak strawman argument here. Not every musician reads, but reading doesnt hurt. For every Hendrix, theres a million players who wont qualify for the gigs they would like, because they lack the skill base needed. Not everyone needs to read, but why not work at anything that might improve your game?
You don't seem to know much about Berlin's beliefs on the matter. He places a great deal of importance on the self-taught aspect. With reading, he's just saying, correctly, that learning to read opens a huge world of potential. And he sets these two approaches above other methods (schools and other educational tools) that, in essence, spend time teaching you what you should be learning on your own (groove, feel, etc.). So in a way, he agrees with you more than you think.
The "(insert idol) didn't learn to read music and they did pretty good" is really a lame analogy and doesn't apply to most people. Everyone plays by ear and is self taught, learning to read music is good also. Jazz Band in High School taught reading music, basic theory, ear training and playing live. They're all important IMHO
Berlin's tone has sounded like shit for the last 20 years
Stop video at 6:20 🤣
