My lot are visiting outlaws for a few days and as I’ve already got a can of potatoes at the ready now I know what to do with them. …thanks for your video…have a great week…..
In defense of the tinned spud beyond just the immediate price thing, I have an immune condition and my energy levels vary wildly day by day. Some days the effort of just washing or peeling a handful of potatoes is roughly equivalent to running five marathons with a rucksack on my back, any efficiencies and effort savings I can make are a godsend. (Probably sacrelige coming from an Irishman .) Recipe looks absolutely lush mate, another banger.
Top tip. If you wash those potatoes a couple of times and soak in cold water for a couple of hours you actually minimise that tannick, tinned taste you get from the canning process and the potato tastes better imho like fresh almost 🎉
Great recipe fella, I love Bombay Potatoes myself and shall be trying this recipe in the week. Bless Moggs he was ready for a taster, next time eh 😊 Keep up the excellent work there catch you next time 🤗
He'd try everything if I let him. He absolutely loves cheese but cats are lactose intolerant so he's very limited. I did hear they can have babybel cheese though. All he thinks about is food 🤣
@Adam_Garratt Now that's funny you should mention cats and mini baby belle, my cat loves those little cheeses 🧀 He hasn't come to any harm by eating them 😉
Nice recipe- they looked delicious 😋 brilliant money saving tips as usual 👍🏻I made Bombay potatoes as a main course last night .. not-so-pro tip: .. before you add the onions to the oil,add half a teaspoon of tumeric (if you have it) give the spuds a couple of minutes in the pan - then them aside and carry on with the onions etc.
You can make a similar dish but using frozen cauliflower (thaw it a bit first) brilliant. You can also add some baby spinach to either dish to get saag aloo and saag gobi or even aloo gobi, potato and cauliflower, great dishes and really cheap.
G'day Adam. Bombay doors open. Bombay potatoes away! I love that terminology 'Stripped Down'. It's better than gutted. Reminds me of the line in Hunt for Red October. 'Stripped down and turn it into a flying gas can'.... Great use of the tinned tiny taters. Bombing them is a fantastic idea using the basic but necessary spices and vegetables. Was that the chilli seeds or the pepper seeds going surface to air. I find a quick pounding of the pepper stops it popping and also releases more flavour. A very nice meal indeed. A pat for Moggs. Cheers Adam 👍🤤😀
Spice mix is spot on but I would use fresh spuds as the canned ones don't seem to soften up no matter how long you cook them. What do they put in them?
While in no way suggesting that it makes tinned potatoes cheaper than fresh, with high fuel costs, you need to factor that tinned potatoes don't take as long to cook. Good old Sainsbury's Basics to the rescue! (Hubbards is just a re-branding - if you look on your receipt, some items still come up as Basics!) I used to keep a couple of tinned baby new potatoes on hand for emergencies, and I found that a good rinse and soak reduced the flavour of the tin. I also used to steam them over a pan cooking something else. We have an increasing popularity in one dish meals, which of course saves on fuel, but how about being one of the trailblazers for one ring meals? It might even be a great justification for the purchase of a worktop induction ring.
You know what mate spicy/Bombay/curried potatoes are bloody lovely I definitely enjoy that little meal. Never used canned potatoes but I will do today. Cheers bud 🍻
Amazing as always, you're a great chef. Fast, simple, delicious, and cheap which is great when you probably have rent every month. Potatoes are always great when you want to keep a meal cheap and easy. It's also nice that they so incredibly healthy that "Technically, the traditional white potato contains all the essential amino acids you need to build proteins, repair cells, and fight diseases. And eating just five of them a day would get you there." but it does follow that with "However, if you sustained on white potatoes alone, you would eventually run into vitamin and mineral deficiencies." So maybe add some fruit or something and you'll survive.
These spuds look really nice Adam and years ago I could have devoured them but I’m afraid now I’d end up in the hospital A & E cos of the chilli and it’s not cos I don’t like it but it doesn’t like me. Guess I could make something similar minus the heat but then it wouldn’t be Bombay potatoes would it. It looks so good though. TFS. I don’t think we could get tinned spud under a couple of dollars, but then our cheapest little bag of potatoes is around $5 - $7. If we go for a drive we can pick them up (beautiful ones too) off the side of the road straight from the farmer $10 for 10 kilos so that’s not too bad I guess but this year I can’t drive anymore so that’s that for me lol. Have a great week, looking forward to your next video.
Made this tonight but without the fresh coriander(out of stock) and it was great, we both enjoyed it. Added a bit more onions, tomatoes and a little passata(to loosen it) to make it more of a main - would have added a little cooked chicken breast as well but I forgot to defrost it. 😅 Some comments I spotted on tinned potatoes - I love them but I know some get a "taste" that they don't like. I find that the "premium" ones need just a couple of rinses with water and then can be used. The "cheaper" ones can be washed by hand, rinsed and then soaked for a few hours in water before you use them. I also cut them up into quarters or if you get a big one(there usually is) - cut into six chunks.
Yep, you are absolutely right, Adam. Coriander stalks have more flavour than the leaves. Hence, they are used during cooking and the leaves for a fresh hit at the end. Great recipe, and as you say, cheap as chips.
nice one mate i adapted it to sw friendly ...ie used water to fry lol... wonderful it was awesome . you would get loads more subs with your own sw friendly recipes
@@Adam_Garratt follow up comment: I found the other recipe you mentioned, thanks. Plus, I did see canned spuds on a supermarket visit the other day...2 bucks! Not great value, that's for sure! I think I'd only use the canned stiff if I had a sudden craving for Bombay potatoes and didn't have any in the pantry.
How do u find induction over gas? This is giving me ideas 4 din dins & adding red lentils. I love ur vibe & obviously ur recipes. The Aus govt r promising cuts in energy bills = oh yeah!😅
Errr..... Mr. Garratt; a few minutes peeling potatoes costs as much as a few pounds of (raw) potatoes as one can. 'Air fry' (at the same time) all your 'roasted' veg. (work out the times) and serve. The 'air fryer' also makes popcorn ( include a caramel recipe) and heats......
I actually prefer floury potatoes with bombay potatoes/saag aloo. I like the craggly kinda fried texture on the outside. You've got to use a non-stick pan though!
I think you know I'm a canned veg fan- I don't use that that often but it can be excellent with a bit of finessing like you've done here. We got so weird and snobby about tinned and even frozen veg at some point. Makes no sense!
It's strange isn't it. I mean tinned sweetcorn is what we all have when it's out of season and no one bats an eyelid. I love tinned carrots sometimes, I eat them out the tin like sweets 🤣

Another wonderful thing to try. I always have can potatoes on hand, never know when you might need them. Thank you
At 38p you can't go wrong. I should have costed it all up but the whole dish probably costs less than £2

Agree. The tinned stuff is great. Made a few recipes Adam suggested with tins. One was a cream chicken pasta dish. Delish.

Oh that looks lovely. And the smell… Mmmm! Fair play for showing us that one Adam I’ll try that tomorrow with a chop maybe. 👍
It goes well as a side with all sorts, enjoy mate
Delicious, I love Bombay potatoes and I have some of those exact same spuds in my cupboard. Xx
For the price, they are actually really nice. I find sometimes they can be a bit watery, but these were firm

That's a really good point, I'd never thought of that before. I'm also part Irish, albeit only about 9% but I'm claiming it anyway 🤣
Irish here too. 😉
Thanks for sharing this recipe Adam , I have had a tin of spuds in the cupboard since lockdown..lol finally I will get to use them

I'll try that out, as someone else said the same. Cheers
Also add salt 🧂 into the water
Also you could maybe pierce the spuds to let them absorb some of the sauce flavour.

You could try slicing them in half and lightly scoring the flat side with a fork. Might help

Potatoes really are a magical veg. Have you seen the film starring Matt Damon called the Martian? He survives on Mars on just potatoes awaiting rescue
