The existing Silchar airport is controlled by Indian Airforce, that's why they are building a new passenger airport. Once the new commercial airport is built, the old airport will not longer be used for commercial flights. While Guwahati is the busiest airport in the North East India, it currently ranks 12th in terms of overall traffic across the country. There has to be significant growth in traffic for Guwahati to get another airport. In the mean time the upcoming terminal building in Guwahati will provide modern amenities and increase passenger handling capacity to 10 million passengers annually. Looking forward to fly out from the new terminal.
Mumbai got a new airport because the current one was at full capacity and couldn't expand more due to land restriction. Silchar won't get two airports, but all passenger operations will move to the new airport and the old one will be dedicated for airforce only, similar to Dibrugarh with Mohanbari for passengers and Chabua airbase for airforce. Currently Guwahati airport is not even running at its 100% capacity and regardless it is getting a new terminal, a new cargo area and many more parking spots for aircraft.
