- The FV4034 Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank (MBT) in service with the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems (now known as BAE Systems Land & Armaments)
Vickers Defence Systems began to develop a successor to Challenger 1 as a private venture in 1986. A £90 million deal for a demonstrator vehicle was finalised in January 1989. In June 1991, the Ministry of Defence placed a £520 million order for 140 vehicles, with a further 268 ordered in 1994. Production began in 1993 and the unit's tanks were delivered in July 1994, replacing the Challenger 1. The tank entered service with the British Army in 1998, with the last delivered in 2002. It is expected to remain in service until 2035. The Army of Oman ordered 18 Challenger 2s in 1993 and a further 20 tanks in November 1997.
The Challenger 2 is an extensive redesign of the Challenger 1. Although the hull and automotive components seem similar, they are of a newer design and build than those of the Challenger 1 and fewer than 5% of components are interchangeable.
The tank's drive system provides a 550 km range, with a maximum road speed of 59 km/h. It has a 4 man crew.
The Challenger 2 is equipped with a 120-millimetre (4.7 in) 55-calibre long L30A1 tank gun the successor to the L11 gun used on the Chieftain and Challenger 1. Uniquely among NATO main battle tank armament, the L30A1 is rifled, because the British Army continues to place a premium on the use of high explosive squash head (HESH) rounds in addition to armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot armour-piercing rounds.
The Challenger 2 is also armed with a L94A1 EX-34 7.62 mm chain gun and a 7.62 mm L37A2 (GPMG) machine gun. 58 main armament rounds and 4,200 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition are carried.
The Challenger 2 is considered to be one of the best protected tanks in the world. The turret and hull are protected with second generation Chobham armour (also known as Dorchester). However, on one occasion, in August 2006, during the post-invasion stage of the Iraq War 2003 an RPG-29 was fired at a Challenger 2 that was climbing over a ramp, the front underside hull armour of the tank which was not augmented with an ERA package was damaged, the tank subsequently returned to base under its own power and was quickly repaired and back on duty the following day. As a result, the ERA package was replaced with a Dorchester block and the steel underbelly lined with armour as part of the 'Streetfighter' upgrade as a direct response to this incident. To date, the only time the tank has ever been seriously damaged during operations, was by another Challenger 2 in a 'blue on blue' (friendly fire) incident.In service: 1998-present

He is disfigured but very much alive today. The two inside (the tank was on overwatch) one being the driver (sat in the gunners seat) and the commander.....were killed instantly by the explosion cause by the HESH round landing through the commanders hatch and striking the bag charge bins inside the turret(Use Brits use two piece ammunition as you can fit more in).........The driver was never found and was just ash once the tank stopped burning. Unlike most other NATO MBTs the Challenger 2 has no seperate ammunition compartments with blow-out panels, the ammunition is stored around the crew in the turret and below the turret ring.
The battle-proven Challenger 2 has incomparable stats: Longest Tank2Tank Killshot, Destroyed 8 Iraqi tanks in 50 seconds. Without tracks a Challenger 2 was stranded and hit by 30rpg and a milan anti-tank missile from point blank until rescued - it was in service again later that day! Another incident 70+ rpgs with only sighting needing adjustments. The Challenger 2 hasn't suffered a single loss to enemy fire. Although much more were deployed, around 25 M1 Abrams were destroyed outright, 500+ were withdrawn from service. 10 Turkish Leopard 2's were suprisingly destroyed in Syria recently. The Challenger 2s record in large scale combat is unique. Megatron you are ;)
the thing is those 25 abrams werent manned by american crews but from syrian etc and the tanks where export versions with less armor and the turkish leopards where fighting in a very hilly area making it easy to get flanked and side shotted a side shot from any rpg will destroy a modern tank no matter what
Turkey uses outdated Leopard 2 A4s without the added armor protection to the turret and the sides of the A5 variant. Take a look at the newest Leopard 2 A7V. It uses additional armor to protect from ballistic and chemical munitions and also comes with an Active Protection System.

@@ashati3176 the brits deployed 135 Challenger 2 during the 2003 invasion of iraq. 1 of the Challenger 2 was hit by 70 RPG and anti tank missiles in open area but still operational. Until the enemy abandoned the tank due to they reallized that they are wasting their RPGs😂😂😂 the crew are still safe inside.

@@METan-fw2cg The T14 will probably do well in the export market if Russia can ever figure out how to make them properly due to it's relatively low price tag. It's no doubt a capable tank with a great gun but as other have pointed out, even using the numbers provided to us by the manufacturer (questionable reliability) the armor is quite poor on paper. I also find it strange the manufacturer would be allowed to release so much information on the T14 when most nations keep the specs of their MBTs secret; it really smells like propaganda to me. I'm withholding judgement until we get reliable information from a western source.
Until it is battle tested. Anybody claiming a tank to be superior than another, is talking out their ars3.

that dish is in fact a radar scanner, it helps it survive, and there is a couple of cameras on it

that dish jamming the enemies signals so they cant located and lock on the tanks for firing,also detect the hidden IEDS on the road.

Am I right saying that this MBT is the lacking engine power when compared to same weight/same gen MBT?
really late response but yes, the challenger 2 is lacking in engine power as it currently is, even more considering that the OES package (the most armored addon armor package available, that looks rly close to whats being shown here) makes it into a 75 ton beast while only having a 1200hp engine, though the engine does have good torque it struggles with accelerating like other mbts on the same weight class (like the abrams sep v3 with 70+ tons), the challenger 3 tank does tackle this issue with a new engine fuel, cooling and transmission systems that are capable and rated at 1500hp (the standard mbt power nowadays), while also tackling the issue with the 120mm (now turned into the 120mm L/55 from Rheinmetall and such), will still be a pretty hefty vehicle but will be a nice upgrade nonetheless.

@@satriat4995 Hi mate. yes, C2 can easily hit speeds of 70-75 kph on roads, even the up armoured ones. The Drivers crew book advises no more than 59 kph but many drivers ignore this when no one is looking!

Might not look good but the antena disables and jamms the signals to Improvised explosive devices so she they drive past the Taliban be sat their singing Allah alackba while fiddling round looking wondering why there bombs didnt go off. The armours made of crushed diamonds, its shaped like a diamond to deflect rounds. This tank truly is the best thing on the battle field unlike some the comments in here mush. They ain't applied to join up to even know what it can do and what battle honours it has. Every rekord known to man is with the challenger 2.

Off-roads it will be significantly slower, slower than many other MBT's.

If you,d ever been in a tank,you wouldn't want to go over 40 mph
Underpowered, slow, unable to swim, profile height too high, noisy, high thermal signature, not multi fuelled, not properly battle tested, dust resistance issues. This list goes on. It does have a good pair of BV's though.

You can't simply compare the Chally and Abrams. They have completely different roles.
The Challenger was made to sit a few clicks back and pick off targets from distance.
The Abrams has brute force. Made to go in, do as much damage as possible and quickly get out.
In my opinion I would rather have an Abrams, because of its speed and armour. But the Challenger is a formidable MBT.

Top speed on roads? 45mph. Height? less than a Leo2, thermal signature? way lower than a jet engined M1, No modern western MBT is multi fuelled, Tested in Iraq (twice). The M1 , Leclerc, and Ariete cannot "swim". The Leo can ford deep water after a conning tower has been fitted but is not truly amphibious. Keep trying noob.

this tank isn't really the best protected.... I would laugh from that! Fighting outdated armour isn't proven.... Certainly the belly armour was thickest with ERA kits but was penetrated with a RPG-29 by its missile over a 750mm RHA pen we know for sure that the armour only has 750mm LOL
