+Raven Humphries She's my reason I wanted to sing opera, because of her performance as Christine. Well, I'll never be that good, and I'll never be able to sing opera, but with the practise I did I became so much better. It's all thanks to her.
Don Grahamburg actually she is rushing the music I think. When singing live you can control the songs the way you want to portray the character so you can make it a little faster or slower and the orchestra will play along to your speed. Or maybe it's just me, correct me if I'm wrong
I feel like it was more of a creative decision to make what Fantine was saying almost rushed out to show the outpouring of stress. I agree when it’s slower it’s much better musically but I prefer this faster version to tell a story.
No, actually the orchestra remembers how each person says their line, singing their song, or when they pause, dance, etc. They know every action and remember it. If something goes on like a mishap, they see on the cameras and continue the music. We know know the situation, maybe she was rushed on that night, and it was her first time?
I love how there is such a vast variety of portrayals for this role, particularly this song. With all of my favorite artists giving life to Fantine it's such a beautiful thing to experience as an audience member. Anne's portrayal in the movie is very emotional and she really gave me a glimpse of the 'truth' of Fantine's misfortunes that I haven't witnessed before. Lea Salonga's vocal clarity is just indisputable. But for Sierra, she poured both her vocal prowess guided by the deepest emotions she could dig up from Fantine's story. Sierra is really just exceptional.
I love it still, I think it's very realistic and no more bubble about love and appearance. For me the music in LND is different from POTO with some songs like Devil Takes the Hindmost or Beauty Underneath are of different styles from Classical Crossover but I think the music is still beautiful, even if ALW didn't like it himself :)
Though I might not be the most qualified person to comment on this mainly because I have quite a bias towards Sierra because she is probably my favorite actress/singer ever and because I have not heard a very wide array of Fantines, I like how Sierra captured the emotion in this song. I think she brought a new feel to the song. Though she might not have hit all of the notes "perfect" I think that she captured what this song means and contrary to popular opinion, I thoroughly enjoyed her vibrato. Sierra and Anne Hathaway's are definitely my favorite performances of this song, but I do see where a lot of people are not so fond of this performance.
I'M SO GLAD YOU SAID THAT. To everyone else Sierra is on Broadway so I think the Broadway producers and directors know what they are doing casting her so stop saying her voice doesn't fit this because she is way better than you can ever hope to be
I think that her voice is perfectly suited to this role. However, there are too many times where she cuts off the notes at the end of a phrase too abruptly.
urbanbeauty87 Fantine is a Lyric Spinto Soprano role not a Mezzosoprano role like many people think. But is true that she is a light soprano and her voice sounds really high, but trust me is only the colour not the register, Fantine can be played by any type of Soprano but it just sounds better in a Lyric, Spinto or Dramatic cause they have a darker voice. However Sierra did it perfectly and I loved it but I understand you.
prettymonsterofevil Not at all, she hit way higher notes when she was in Phantom of the Opera as Christine. Cosette wouldn't be too high for her at all.
What does it matter how fast her vibrato is, or if her vocal register can't go low enough for the role. I respect her in whatever role she performs. If she were to perform as Fantine, I wouldn't say "her voice wasn't low enough for it". If she played Christine, I wouldn't say "her notes were slightly higher than written". If she played Kim from Miss Saigon, I wouldn't say "she can't do it because she isn't Asian". No matter what she does, my heart melts when I hear her voice. She makes me happy inside.
I was with you until Miss Saigon. She absolutely cannot play that role, exactly because she is not Asian. But otherwise, I agree with you. As long as they can sing it well enough and act it well, that's enough.
Sierra is amazing, and I was also with you until miss Saigon. That’s a part specifically written for an asian. I know you didn’t mean it, you were giving out examples, but if a white person were to preform something written for an Asian, or Black person, then that’s very disrespectful. Like in Phantom 😂 Mme Giry is the only one to have a slight French accent in Phantom. After I can't complain, all Les Mis or Phantom with a French accent ... not really 😅
@@Niqhtmusic What do you mean by "come out" ? I'm French and I can assure you that whatever the time period is, the French accent when speaking in English exists
Y’all just take a moment to realize that the camera filming this audio is not that good so her vibrato at the end sounds kind of weird because it was too much for the camera to handle.
This song gets me every time! I absolutely adore Sierra! Her voice is just incredible! And of course there's so much passion in it! She's one of my favorites!
You're more than welcome. I Dreamed a Dream was written for a mezzo soprano, so she's naturally singing it in a range suitable for a mezzo, but her natural tessitura is much higher than this and her tone is bright and ringing. That, and many mezzo-sopranos cannot reach the high E above high C she hits dead on at the end of the title song in Phantom of the Opera. All she's doing differently in this song Part of Your World is belting! :)
I love her voice but she sounds better as Christine than fantine. Never seen her on stage, only on youtube but I would kill to see her in real life. To bad I live in England. 😒
I saw Les Miserables at Queens Theatre on Tuesday and I heard her sing this live. I cannot describe in words how good it was. She truly has the voice of an angel. I hope I get to see her do the role of Christine in POTO live sometime, that would be truly awesome.
You guys just don't get it. I don't care about what kind of soprano she is...what do you feel when you see her sing? Sierra sings with such passion that I am always left emotionally spent from just watching her. I think she is amazing. Even more amazing are her interviews where you get to meet the real Sierra. She is adorable, funny and humble. I am in awe of her.
As much as I deeply love Sierra Boggess, this is the first time I've been able to label one of her performances less than any others. I feel as if every time she holds a note it ends up going off tune a little, and she heads straight for the fast vibrato almost every time. Whatever holds her voice together I guess.. I know no one is perfect, I do love her voice tremendously, but does anyone else agree?
I honestly think that I would be doing the same thing as her if I were playing this role, because after all, Fantine is sick and dying, and no one sounds perfect when they're dying, right?
@@ephinemusic At this point in the show, she has just been fired from her job. She isn't sick yet. That being said, I think her rapid vibrato adds a level of anguish and frustration, although it's not my preferred method of this song being performed. A lot of actresses have a hard time finding the balance of singing the song correctly and portraying the emotions. It's like no one realizes how hard the song is until they have to sing themselves lol.
2:37 i dont even care that she cracked, i love her! I am sure she was wonderful to watch and gave fantine the proper emotional performance that is needed...sierra is so awesome going out of her comfort zone and doing a role that requires belting! :)
She has uncontrolled vibrato because sopranos traditionally have breathy low notes. Therefore, her lack of breath control caused by the range of the song causes her to get uncontrolled vibrato. However, even though the song is a bit too low for her, she could control her vibrato if she concentrated the energy of the sound instead of letting it spread. As in singing through the note, not at it.
SIERRA SHOULD NOT BE BLONDE AGAIN. I mean her beautiful red locks T-T she could have been brunette like what she did as Christine. But nevertheless. Amazing as expected of her T-T
I just love all these voice experts on here explaining what these very well known professional singers are doing right or wrong. One can only hope they're dillusion hasn't actually gone so far that they teach their 'knowledge' to unsuspecting individuals looking to increase their talent...
For all of you saying she wasn’t very good here, I think she was just having a bad day. If you try and find other performances of her singing it, she holds onto the notes a lot more and stops abruptly only to add more emotion

@@Lola_Sokolskiy9 years later I would say it's a mezzo, but I agree the range is a bit crazy haha! Both Fantine and Eponine have some pretty low notes and some pretty high belts! Good luck with the role, it's such a beautiful part to play :)
Though I originally didn't prefer Sierra as Fantine (I'm a huge fan by the way--feel free to check out my video of me meeting her when I saw her as Fantine in London), I saw Les Miz on Broadway a couple weeks ago and realized what makes Sierra so stunning as a performer. She brings out the raw passion in every role she does. And it shows. I remember sitting through I dreamed a dream on Broadway and thinking "wow, what flawless vocals" but there wasn't much passion. When I say through sierra's I dreamed a dream I thought, "wow, what an amazing performer." Frankly, she gave me goosebumps like never before.
I LOVE Sierra; she's amazing, but I agree with many of the comments below: Les Miz doesn't suit her voice. Her acting is incredible though, but her voice isn't at its best.
Okay, after searching I can't find it anymore. However, my search turned up 2 things: a thread which goes to painstaking lengths to identify sierra's voice type (you might actually enjoy reading through it, just search her name and coloratura. And I also found an interview in which Sierra describes herself as just a coloratura, making you correct. That's the best I can do, unfortunately! My guess is that wherever I saw it, it's gone now :(
There are catagories for soprano classifications. Then there are sub-catagories to narrow it down even more. For the coloratura you're either a Lyric or a Dramatic. A Lyric Coloratura is much lighter and smaller in tone clear. A Dramatic is richer and more powerful in tone but can still hit those hiugh notes effortlessly. Sierra is Lyric Coloratura while Anna O'Byrne is a Dramatic Coloratura. Both have played Christine in POTO & LND yet you can hear the difference in their voice.
Oh my. Sorry! I didn't want you to search for that information until your head hurt. But I guess we can say the mystery is solved. Haha! I will be sure to check out that website. Thank you. :)
I'm just here on a Sierra Boggess binge tbh, she's absolutely phenomenal in whatever role!

When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting

Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream

Made me cry
I love you Sierra!!!
So good!
You, ma'am/sir, made my day.
It's hard to imagine that this was the same voice that played the little mermaid!!
She literally can do anything.
Wow Wow And more Wow Love Sierra Boggess
I don't know what you guys are talking about. Sierra did beautifully. As always.
Well said! And, I agree...she owns the role of Christine. haven't seen her as Ariel, but looking forward to it.
She can play any role and be absolutely beautiful, in short.
I love Sierra!!!!!!!! :-)
Wow! Very powerfully
I LOVE Sierra; she's amazing, but I agree with many of the comments below: Les Miz doesn't suit her voice. Her acting is incredible though, but her voice isn't at its best.
I'm sorry are you on broadway
Olivia Dayton this was the West End, not Broadway ;)
everything she touches turns to gold. Ariel, Christine, Fantine. She should play Maria Von Trapp in the Sound of Music.
Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee And she would play it very well, indeed.
And also Love Never Dies is the sequel to Phantom of the Opera in which Christine turned to Phantom. So it's just nice to hear her sing this line. :P
I got my tickets to POTO On January 25th at eight PM. I can't wait to see her :)
My guess is that wherever I saw it, it's gone now :(
I thought I saw on her resume that she was a lyric coloratura? Maybe I'm wrong... But yeah, she rocks and that's what really matters here!
saw this today, too fierce.
omfg ... sierra doesn't belt... SHE ROARS .. amazed
She was in a show called Love Never Dies... remember?
yes she was there and in the little mermaid and in the phantom of the opera and more..
Sierra is the best.
I´d love being in the theatre watching her :3 but i cant i live in Mexico :(
Oh my. Sorry! I didn't want you to search for that information until your head hurt. But I guess we can say the mystery is solved. Haha! I will be sure to check out that website. Thank you. :)
Oh yay a new one!! Do u have her arrest?
Was it just me or was her pitch wrong in "but there are dreams that can not be"?
Sierra boggess is going to play Christine In the 25th anniversary of phantom on broadway
