    The selling is because people have lost interest in luxury bags alongside the steep decline in quality and style. We’re living in times where there are very real problems going on and no one wants to hear the words “luxury collection”, “luxury journey” etc.

    During the pandemic we had nothing to do but buy luxury bags and accessories. Then the designers got wind of that and started to raise prices on their most coveted bags and we couldn’t even get our hands on some of them. Now that life is a bit normal we prefer to be out and travel and experience memories. Inflation is at an all time high. We need money to eat, pay mortgages, rent, utilities and gas for our vehicles. The luxury houses robbed us with their bad quality of bags. It’s a toxic cycle that is now time to break!!

    I think it is personal. Social media does not represent most people, it is a very small segment of society. Most of the people I watch on social media are not selling their wardrobe. From what I have seen the everyday person who can afford bags between 2k and 10K are not selling them. When they do it is because it no longer fits into their lifestyle. Getting married and starting a family changes your priorities and your extra cash. RUclipsrs and Instagrams for the most part do not fit into this model.

    I’m a small youtuber but I’m not selling anything. Ever! 😂 It took me a long time to get my collection of classic bags and each one was bought deliberately and not impulsively. So I use & enjoy all of them. I guess it may have something to do with the reason why you bought anything in the first place. If it’s because it was a trend or you felt you have to have it because ‘everyone’ has it and not because you yourself want it, you might get bored with it after a while. I don’t know why YTs seem to sell a lot lately, just guessing. Great topic Sophie.

I hope that the economy will get better soon so I can save more and purchase a home and go travel take a vacation. Can you imagine how many places can you go with all these handbags you bought? It needs to be super special and still, I don’t want to duplicate anything. So I feel for people with big collection, it becomes natural to slow down. I feel the same way with watches and jewelry. I’ve got what I really wanted , so to me, there’s no point to keep buying as much as before. I don’t think I will ever 100% stop but I’m absolutely ready to pace myself at this point. It’s way less exciting than it was before and the crazy prices are also quite a big part of it.

    At the end of our lives, those experiences with our loved ones, those are what we will remember. Trust me, a handbag will go bad just like anything else (although luxury should last much longer). At about 30, you start thinking long-term (retirement, legacies, etc). Also, in today's financial climate, luxury will make you a target for thieves even more than in the past because theft is on the rise. I think, at least here in the southern states of the US, contemporary brands like Coach and Kate Spade are much more popular because of their quality at a much lower price. If a LOT of people buy the lower end brands because of affordability, then you will have a much lower chance of being robbed for the handbag you carry. If everyone can afford something, thieves don't make money on stealing it from you. Also, if your handbag is stolen, then you don't lose as much money.

    Yes Sophie…I totally get it. I too have sold a few bags just to buy something else as I am fine tuning my bag collection down to 40-45 bags that I love and will use on repeat. I semi retired at 50 so you can reach your goal. I think people have realized they were over consuming and are now tired of it. The pandemic had us stuck in the house so we escalated our buying but now we have too much stuff. I have been purging for 6 months now and I am still not done. We just have too much stuff…who needs all this stuff? I am also offended that some of these lux houses take me for a fool. Especially Chanel. I am about to sell my last couple of pieces from them because I find them the worst of them all. The greed along with their poor quality has turned me off their brand completely. Just my two cents!

    • @Born1986
      @Born1986 2 месяца назад

      Seriously! I had a small Chanel collection to begin with that I had acquired between 2019-2022, but have since stopped and started selling when my Chanel 22 (second season release in the infamous caramel brown color) started showing the slightest wear after 4 hrs of use. Sitting in the passenger seat, or on my shoulder, hardly opened. Chanel called it regular wear and tear. Well I didn’t want to see what that wear would look like in a decade so I sold it at a loss. Everything just looks cheap. I finally had rhinestones fall out of three pieces of costume jewelry so I’m done with that as well. They make us aspirational purchasers feel like chumps, because the price tag is high while the quality is low.

    I also think it's also because we're in a recession: Luxury YTers are getting less advertisers, have a higher cost of living and are guilty of lifestyle creep. Getting rid of the Birkens/Chanels they never wear is a great way to free up some cash.

    I think it's normal for people's priorities to change now and then, I'd say it's healthy. Also, Minimalism was big 10 to 12 years ago, and it's circling back around. All the best with retiring at 45, driven as you are, you might just make it!

    Once you're able to see them, touch them, own them, buy whatever you want, consuming a lot of it, and you've been doing it for awhile, any experience of excitement you used to get will no longer be new to you. At some point you'll be able to see each luxury item objectively and not be clouded by the price tag, name brand, fomo, material, quality, or hype. Add to that people only get older and priority changes to adapt to a new life that's constantly changing. If and when you feel a burnout, that's when things need to change. Different people feel the burnout at different time and some people may never feel any burnout at all so there's no need for them to make any change.

    In my humble opinion, "luxury journey" is not realistic, most of us, can't related. I invested my hard earned money on property, and financial very comfortably, and only buy the bags that made my heart sing, I owned quit a few brand bags, I buy them because I love them and used them, not for follow the trend, "unboxing" than return them, or even resell. I still have my very 1st LV Alma MM I got 25+ yrs ago, she still sitting pretty in my shelf. I got to say, it's very interesting topic and the actual real reason behind it.🧡🧡btw, your green Chanel made me drool 💚💚

      I’m 63 years old and when I was younger, I took great pleasure in shopping. It didn’t take me long to realize that after the money was spent and I got the merchandise home, I felt empty. I have a closet full of designer purses and, while I am not selling any of them, I am not buying any new ones either. The quality has decreased while the prices have escalated. As I’v matured, I have learned that self-worth comes from within and not from carrying a fancy bag, proclaiming to the world that you have enough money to buy it and that you’re ‘somebody’. This is just my opinion and people are free to spend their money any way they like. For me, I’d rather have money in the bank than another unused purse sitting on my closet shelf.

  • @iamjjeoreo
    @iamjjeoreo 2 месяца назад +4

    I think these things are cyclical. I first got into collecting bags in the early Noughts, which was a time of great excess. It was a trend to take photos of your bag collection on your stairs, that’s how many bags people had. Then there was the trend of minimalism around 2010, no logos, sound familiar? I remember shunning anything that had a monogram or logo on it. Lo and behold, logomania and maximalism came back with a vengeance in the late 2010s. Now we are in 2024 and repeating that cycle.
    Also, to anyone who can’t retire early, don’t be sad. Everyone’s life cycle is different. I took 10+ years off in my 30s to be a SAHM and am just returning to work. I expect to work past 65 if health allows. And that’s okay because I cherished my time being at home with my child and getting to witness all the little milestones.

    In regards to your shopping videos doing well, yours are the only ones I watch because it’s almost like window shopping which to me is sooo much more fun than hauls. I also like when you show what you’ve purchased but really, it’s seeing all the pretty things in stores that makes me happy, not owning them. The shopping is always the best bit and I regret a lot of my purchases so I don’t buy much anymore. I can imagine that the more something costs, the more dopamine it gives you and maybe the more of a disappointment you feel afterwards when it comes down? Maybe part of why people sell?

    It resonates with me too- There was a time when purchasing one designer bag a month was the ultimate dream for me, and I think it was also a time of designer novelty, beginning of social media...It has all become too ubiquitous now. Now I have this mountain of bags and other trinkets I carry around from house to house when I move and it's just stupid and a hassle. I'm lugging stuff around because I spent so much money on it, but the truth is, it's also costing money to move it around and store it. It takes up a lot of space, and mental space to keep collections of things you don't really use. It fogs your brain. They're just not important. Like you, I'm not going to say no to a new thing every now and then, i still absolutely love beautiful things. But they don't feed me the way they did and I have bigger projects to aspire to.

    We need videos like these Sophie. You know I have only recently realised that (trigger alert for some) that I enjoy high street classic sometimes/cool sometimes/girly sometimes clothes a lot more than high end handbags. It was initially all about the brands but now it’s more about my style and how I want to express myself. I never bought more than 1-2 bags a year earlier and now it’s showing down further because I now understand myself better and what sparks true joy in me. Thank you for this video and your honesty. I feel some of us are stuck in the rut and hustle of working hard and partying to shopping harder. So some of us work hard only to be able to do the latter. Spirituality (the right kind) and healing and coaching has helped me re-evaluate what I TRULY WANT and not what social media wants me to want.

    Hi Sophie, it's me Ivy. I love this topic! I have actually been selling some of my designer collection a few years back. My reason why i sold my first 2 bags was because I did not like the style very much and it paved the way to buy me a new bag which then became a continuous cycle. I would buy a bag and after a year or 2, i sell it. I don't know but i easily get tired of using the same bag lol so instead of keeping it tucked away in my closet, i just sell it and buy new a one🤭

    Sophie, I came to your videos years ago and you captivated my attention beyond my interest in the world of luxury, I like to listen to you because of your accent, your intelligence and how you show the B side of the luxury industry, I don't have that much passion for cars but I love hearing you speak with so much knowledge and passion about them too. I feel that some people have learned something since COVID. We understand that life is limited, time is counted and that we must enjoy it. What's the point of working 7 days a week, having dozens of bags in a closet that you can't use because you don't have free time to leave the house because you're working? Why not enjoy that day off with your friends or partner, repeating bag that is not so terrible either. Somehow, and due to the economic crisis, we have woken up and understood that we no longer want to buy everything we see, we are not so stupid to get carried away by the ridiculous prices of material things that will be very beautiful and the symbol of something achieved but nothing Better than living life, creating dreams and memories that no one and nothing can erase.

You cant really know if a friend wont betray you, you cant expect anything back from friends even when that is a norm, friends become busy with their own life and children and there is little to no time to nurture good emotions, support and genuine meetings. Friends are very expensive due to the unpredictable nature, how vulnerable they are to stress and you cant expect anything from other people.
