I do believe that certain luxury brands really have taken the mickey out on the middle classes. These luxury brands cannot sustain themselves on the 1% and they have “sold” themselves as status symbols. People are waking up to the fact that these beautiful bags mean nothing when the inside wallet is empty.
We call that “all hat; no cattle”.

Agree! Now when I see the new prices, I am thinking how stupid the person has to be to pay a double price from what it used to be not a long time ago. There is no interesting items on a market as well, I feel a crisis in creativity in Lux brands, they sell old fashioned models of bags year after year and call them “classic”, just because they can’t create anything new. I am sick of birkings, Kelly’s, classic flaps, lady diors and other ancient overpriced stuff!

Birkin and Kelly bags are everywhere on RUclips, they are not special anymore, and when I went to the city I saw predominantely just Birkin and Kelly bags worn by ladies. Just 1 or 2 people wearing brands like YSL or Gucci or LV.

I think the reason the luxury community is decreasing is because their quality are getting worse. I wouldn’t even consider buying a new chanel bag simply because of the quality and the high price that doesn’t match that quality. I think more people are buying second hand, as you’ve said, so there’s less of a need to buy new and in stores. I also think the incoming recession/ cost of living skyrocketing is a big reason as well as the stealth wealth trend.

A couple years ago when I started seeing Chanel unboxing videos with crooked flaps and misaligned seams I pulled them off the wish list. It is one thing to pay that much for something special, and a completely different thing to pay that much for something with obvious faults.

Those Hermes and Chanel from the 80s look way better than anything produced by those brands recently, no matter how "exclusive" the new designs are. Those flaps and Kellys from back then actually look flawless and worth the investment.
When luxury companies put profit over quality they already become like regular retail.

All of the RUclipsrs I have watched over the years have become so wealthy that they are no longer relatable. As someone else just mentioned, they all seem to be collecting Hermes bags every other week. For me, watching the world burn and seeing poeple struggle with the cost of living, watching someone add to their handbag collection worth the cost of a house, isn't something I am interested in.

I'm gravitating right now to videos where people describe their "style logic" and show how they coordinate outfits together. I like seeing the evolution of kind of "knowing" (without remember specifics) a person's style and then seeing how they take a piece new to them (either from store or second-hand) and how they then integrate it into their daily look. So I still enjoy unboxings, but I find I'm becoming more drawn to then watching the item "put into practice" instead of added to a shelf to make way for the next unboxing.

The last 4 years feel like a blur, my early 20s (apparently my best years) have been stolen from me. Cost of living did not feel like a gradual change, more so the rug was pulled out from under me. At this point in time I cannot even sell my items as here in New Zealand no one pays for it when they can just steal a car and ram raid the Gucci store, so here I sit with all my stuff and no $ for gas to leave my house. For me it’s been the price increases. I’ve simply been priced out of most fashion houses. I mean I would never ever buy a Chanel classic flap new from boutique. Spending 12-13k after sales tax for a middling quality bag seems completely insane to me. Granted if I was making seven figures or more a year, it wouldn’t, but relevant to my income the prices have just made those types of bags illogical to buy. But, even the sub 5k bags. I just simply can no longer wrap my head around spending that much money on a handbag.
I think part of this is that the price increases have occurred so quickly. It hasn’t been a slow creep. So I don’t think you have any real time to adjust. Combine this with so many other things becoming so much more expenses and incomes not increasing well the price increases seems even higher. These days I buy the occasional canvas LV and then I stick to contemporary brands like Coach or Mulberry.

I admit I am a bit bored with luxury bags at this point. I much prefer the novelty, excitement & accessibility of contemporary brands. For me handbag quality is paramount. I don't care about status symbols. In addition to some great contemporary brands, there are some very high quality bags for very reasonable prices on the pre-loved market now. The small, for fun RUclips channels are the ones that I like. Because of who you are, yours is one of very few big channels that I follow. Thanks for the open forum on this.🤗🌻

I love watching the vibes lately where youtubers and bringing back old school content like whats in my bags. We get to see them loving and using the bags but also what they carry day to day. I also love how they style their luxury especially where they mix it with non luxury pieces! Not so much unboxings, like people have touched on already it is a bit samey, however the classic content shows them using and loving what they already have ❤

Luxury used to be worth it because of the beauty and quality, especially with bags. However, the prices have skyrocketed and the quality has gone down so I view it differently. I think most people who can afford luxury also want quality, and you don’t get that now. You either need to have so much money that you don’t care if the bag shows wear quickly and can replace it, or you save and save so you can pretend you are financially elite. I feel like I’m ok with the bags I have and haven’t seen any in probably 2 years that are worth the current prices. I have bags I bought in 2021 that I would absolutely not purchase at current pricing even though I am really happy I have them. I’m spending more money on travel and activities than bags and apparel. I have enough. I’m not really watching unboxings because I’m not curious about what fits in bags since I’m not that eager to buy with the price/quality mismatch I see right now.

There was a peak for (online) shopping during the pandemic, the lock downs. No other options to spend money, so it went into luxury items, such as bags. And we were bored, so it was a kind of entertainment to watch "nice and special" things. Now the life is back...and way much better choices for the money! Going out, meeting friends, theatres, cinemas, travelling...having a real life!

Hi Sophie, I love watching your haul videos and your shopping vlogs. I love seeing how you style what you've purchased and what's new out in the luxury world. I also love when you post videos like this one.
I am in my 40's and I am moving in another direction when it comes to spending my money. I love handbags but I've found myself drawn to spending money on experiences. I went to Rome last year and I spared no expense. What I spent would have bought me 2 or maybe 3 handbags which doesn't feel like it would be worth it anymore. I know a lot of people who are feeling the stress of this (US) economy and are going through some series financial issues and buying luxury items feels like I'm disconnected from the world. It's like saying I can't see that people are struggling. No judgement to the people who are still buying these things. I'm speaking about how I'mm feeling right now.
I will always like luxury shopping but right now it feels like there is a shift in this community, as you've mentioned. I'm leaning more towards pre-loved stores as well. The price increases are astounding. I just got back from a trip to NYC and I spent my money on expensive dinners at fabulous restaurants. It was great!
I think you are right, luxury unboxing videos seem a bit out of touch. I don't get as exciting watching them as I used to. I will always watch them but something has definitely changed.

I don't know why but I feel that my interest is shifting from luxury goods into all things skin care. That has my attention more these days. This is what I would rather spend my money on.....skin care and spending money on med spa treatments such as microneedling, etc. Buying a bag or SLG just isn't doing it for me anymore.

I used to be big into luxury, when I first started making six figures in my 20s I was big into luxury but now I make a lot more than I have ever made and I'm just over it. I intend to sell some of my bags, they don't make me happy anymore.

Great video Sophie. This topic is so relevant. I believe because of the pandemic, Russias war in Ukraine (affecting the food supply from Ukraine) along with the heavy sanctions (which made oil and gas prices go up) as well as the Chinese ruling party telling their people that "we don't do luxury anymore, it doesn't benefit the people" the recession became global and severe. I am interested in the stock market and it is easy to see how negative enents such as the horrifying wars at the moment affect people's outlook. People will not buy as much, as prices go up and times are uncertain.
Here in Stockholm people really don't use high end labels as they did before the pandemic, I rarely see chanel or dior bags anymore.
The second hand market is flooded.
Personally I enjoy watching videos when people are out and about, exploring a city, its nightlife, perhaps some shopping. I love travelling so I will continue to prioritise that, otherwise I may (or may not) buy one handbag a year (but I can honestly only see myself buying one or two more since I don't feel the need as I used to).
Have a great week Sophie and David, make sure to enjoy the beautiful summertime :)

Those are really good points. I also believe that the „luxury space“ on social media has been over saturated. Similarly to the RUclips make-up space a few years ago. People have also caught up to the fact how quickly trends come and go in the luxury space and how much money can be wasted. Because social media gives the illusion that a product is a NEED. I also have the impression that “quiet luxury” makes people less interested in logos and so many products have become less attractive. People used to (and still do) spend a lot on the logo.

The people with families struggle enough without the unecessary pressure of designer things. I do acknowledge however that in places like Harrods the luxury floors have plenty of elegant stuff of whatever that is radically more beautiful than that of high street, so let's be fair. My other love affair is with fountain pens which for me at least, reveals a lot about the person using it, and is an object of regular use and therefore joy.

This is a great topic and I’m glad someone is speaking from a realist perspective. This is truth! For me, i believe it’s absolutely ridiculous for anyone to spend 10k + on a bag and I can afford it, but I just can’t imagine. My limit of any VINTAGE Chanel bag is 5k. Somehow everyone on the internet has money to buy a Kelly and birkin brand new now? Cmon, this doesn’t add up. I own 2 Chanel bags that I bought preloved and will probably never sell them. I have about 10-12 bags total and most are mid-lux like Tory Burch. I don’t own any LV since I sold them all, they’re everywhere and it’s been a kill joy.

I have maybe 2 or 3 more higher priced luxury bags on my list and then I'm done for a bit. I want a Prada bag, possibly a Gucci bag and a Celine bag. That's it. I became a foster mom to a sweet 1 year old boy, so I’ve temporarily retired my handbags to my closet as I’ve been inundated with baby gear: a diaper bag, a hip carrier fanny pack, a stroller, etc. I love my handbags and luxury in general, but I can only use my nice things on weekends when my husband is available to help me with the baby. Luxury isn’t a big part of my current chapter 🤷🏻‍♀️. I also think that less people are carrying around designer brands because of the economy. People either cannot afford luxury or choose not to wear high value items because of fear of theft or not wanting to stand out in general. Plus, the price increases have been crazy! Lastly, I’ve been more interested in travel and experiences, especially with our new little love ❤️. I’ve been watching a lot of travel vlogs on RUclips lately. Luxury unboxings just feel so tone-deaf and I truly am sad to say that. Parts of the world are being obliterated as we speak, families cannot afford groceries, people can’t find entry-level jobs, university is incredibly expensive in the US & puts many youth into extreme debt. It just doesn’t feel like the type of climate where I’d want to participate in owning new luxury fashion and I simply can’t afford new, so unboxings just make me sigh because I feel like more content creators aren’t talking about it like they should be. The quality is also going down with major fashion houses so I don’t understand how they’re still selling like they are. Hi Sophie. Deb at Wildunfiltered also had this same question and I commented on Deb's recent video:
I think what has ruined luxury YT is the after effects of the pandemic. The luxury goods businesses closed shop for awhile, lost client traffic in boutiques, lost client advisors, lost the many people that processed e-commerce orders, etc. The luxury brands had to make up for their losses by inflating prices so that they could attempt to meet their projected sales forecasts for 2020 and 2021. On top of that, those companies who were looking to influencers to promote their up and coming brands lost so much in sales to the point that you don't hear their names anymore. One brand I know has almost everything on their website from 30% to 70% off.
The global economy is bad overall that people are holding on to their money for dear life. I don't want to see hauls. I think it's tone deaf if not in bad taste in the current climate. Introducing new bags is great. I watched you and Steph a.k.a. Handbagholic go on a recent shopping trip you took in London. I rather enjoyed that because not all of the bags in the UK are available yet in other regions. At least your shopping in your part of the world allows everyone else to preview what bag selections are yet to come. I look forward to those sort of previews and you aren't pressured to have to buy anything!
So Sophie, I'll message you on IG because you endorsed the brand I mentioned that's clearing the bulk of their merchandise sometime ago. I'm curious to know if you held onto it!
