Welcome to Daily Life Drawing Sessions. These sessions allow artists to practice drawing 1, 2, 5, and now 10 minute figure drawing poses that we have selected from the vast Image Reference Library (www.nma.art/v3....
    Using these videos is simple!
    1. Set up your computer, laptop, or tablet near your working area with the screen at a perpendicular angle to your eye.
    2. Make sure you are working in a well lit area with your drawing surface perpendicular to your eye as well.
    3. Play the video and try to work in real time (no pausing!). First you will see a series of one minute poses. This doesn't give you much time so you'll want to try to get a sense of the whole figure, whether you're drawing gesture lines or an interconnecting lay-in. Even for the one minute poses, don't rush! Just set realistic goals for yourself.
Tip: When two images are shown side-by-side choose whichever image you like. If you repeat the same video session again (and we recommend you do) you can do the drawing over again or choose the other side.
    4. After five one-minute poses, you'll get the chance to do five two-minute poses. Here you are going to work the same way that you did with the one minute poses but you'll also be able to start defining the forms (starting with major forms) and how they connect with each other.
    5. The last two-poses are 5 minutes each. We have chosen particularly difficult poses here so take your time to work them out

This is my first time drawing poses as a beginner artist and let me tell you... it was amazing. I didn't even realize my potential until I got to minute 10 🤧 I got so much more comfortable drawing poses that by the end of it that I felt like couldn't wait to practice again tomorrow 😄 Thank you, this was very helpful 👍🥳

Same! This was the most fun I've had in a while. I started doing gestural drawing this week, was doing seals, and wanted to move to human anatomy. I stopped at 25 minutes and didn't even realize I was almost drawing for half an hour! my last drawing and first drawing show so much improvement in those few minutes

omg thank you for writing this comment sm. about 5 minutes in i was gonna give up because the poses became seemingly impossible for me to figure out. then i checked the comment section and saw that you, another begginer artist, found it helpful by the end. So, I continued.
and you know, my poses started to look better! the very last one i drew looks pretty good!

I finished going through all of this video series, doing all the indicated timings, today. I could still do more, but along with some other things I've been doing over the past few months, it helped me to graduate out of being tracing-heavy and feel more comfortable with my freehand work, generally. If you're just starting with figures here are some tips:
    0. Get your drawing setup as ergonomically sound as you can. Angle the drawing surface(I use a laptop stand for this), get it at a good height(in my case, a cafe tray held in the lap), and learn the different grips for your medium, whether it's a digital stylus, pencils, pens, charcoal etc. Different media allow for different grips, and using them on a correctly positioned surface will let your arm and wrist make the most steady movements. As I did these videos, I made little improvements to my setup between sessions and they added up at to least as much of an improvement as the actual study of the images.
    1. Put in some grid quadrants first to help you get proportions. Everything is limited by your proportioning skill at first and it doesn't take too long to make a "crosshair" to help you estimate, even on the 1-minute. It doesn't have to be a dense grid.
    2. Aim to first mark in the dark shadows, negative spaces and the envelope shape formed by the pose. These are more abstract shapes which will help get you away from seeing face, arm, leg, etc. It's another proportioning trick! Everything starts with how you divide up the page.
    3. Also look for directional landmarks. Often I would mark in the gaze of the eyes and the angle of the hips and shoulders to help get things started.
    4. When you feel ready to make things feel more connected, you can add in the gestural lines. If you already feel comfortable with the proportion you can start with more gestural lines but often you'll discover that when the pose is more complex it's easier to capture the abstract shapes first with straight lines. Straight lines have clearer, simpler proportions than curving or wobbly ones.
    5. If the figure looks flat, imagine a 3D form like a box or cylinder placed over each limb, and try to mark that in. This uses your skills at constructed forms and perspective to help you establish better proportions. These technical skills are practiced heavily in the Drawabox course, but mostly in an abstract way; here, you can use it to support and build on your observation. Likewise with anatomy; practicing to recreate anatomy drawings from memory can help you understand the detail when doing figures.
    6. If you're starting to get bored, that's often a sign that if you keep going, you'll see "deeper" into the image and be able to work on more of the details. Make your sessions intense like workouts and allow yourself rest days if you feel burnout coming on. I averaged slightly over 1 video a day, and took one day off at the end.

I'm not an artist, but I've taken art classes. I'm self-conscious and self-critical, so it's hard for me to draw. These drills are great though. I know I won't finish, I know they won't look great, but they're quick enough for someone with ADD, and the end of a session is fun to look back on with all the changes and progress made from these rapid-fire drawings.

Wonderful music and ballet expressive model / lines, creative mood :) thank you. I noticed when I used to study salsa dance after work, I used to set human wood model into dance, poetic states, when I stopped dance exercises, trying to set wood model into poetic states, could not.

surprisingly, i had an easier time with the 5 minute and 10 minute ones. the ones that where i only had 1 to 2 minutes were the most difficult for me.

With the 1-2 minute poses, try to focus on getting down the simplest expression of the pose. Feel free to check out our playlist of instructors demoing shorter timed poses for examples of how to do this:

I like these to do my daily gesture, but you do have to put the speed in 1.75 because they give so much time!

this was super useful, and when i was on the 10 minute pose (cause i finished a bit early) i looked back on all the previous poses and thought 'wow, i did that?
    overall just really helpful :)
