Introducing a new way to study figure drawing...
At New Masters Academy we're always looking for new ways to help teach the fundamentals of art. Recently we have begun releasing (via RUclips) a series of timed reference videos that we call the Daily Life Drawing Sessions: • Daily Life Drawing Ses...
These sessions allow artists to practice drawing 1, 2, 5, and now 10 minute figure drawing poses that we have selected from the vast Image Reference Library: www.nma.art/im...
These sessions have been met with with overwhelming enthusiasm which sparked a new idea:
Now we have begun recording real-time video lessons where your New Masters Academy instructors draw from the timed sessions right alongside you. Here's how we recommend you use this resource: First do the DLDS video yourself one or multiple times trying to stay true to the timer and improving on your initial drawings and understandings of the poses each time. Next watch your favorite instructors do the same drawings from the same videos as you, comparing what similarities and differences there are between not only you and your favorite instructor, but also among the different instructors. This is an approach that has never been implemented in art education and so far the feedback has extremely positive. We currently have the first 5 sessions recorded by both Steve Huston and Glenn Vilppu and we will be adding more instructors and more sessions on a regular basis.
For all sessions including over 500 hours of video lessons visit: www.nma.art

@@NewMastersAcademyorgNMA Feels to me like Mike is more a combo of Vilppu and Reilly, with a bit more emphasis on connecting rhythms via their lateral side-to-side forces, as opposed to primarily volumetric cross-contours as Vilppu teaches. So Force is also drawn flat from side-to-side of the form rhythms' 2D plane, as well as twisting and wrapping, rather than only volumetricly over the perpendicular form after the core flow and bracketing of Vilppu. -- Vilppu is so wonderful, but as he says, he's really just teaching classical/renaissance technique, for which there are many horses mouths, himself among the best. Mattesi's approach seems to incorporate more modern Reilly-type methods and feels a bit more aggressive. He pushes poses to more exaggerated extents and synthesizes aspects of the classical/traditional with the modern/academic. So would certainly love to see him included, all approaches worth learning. Especially given that you have many Reilly, many Vilppu, & many Classical courses, but none that show how nicely they can all be combined for exaggerated dynamics?

@@jazzlehazzle Matessi’s work is gorgeous but the FORCE method is incomprehensible to me, I’m sorry to say. Plus he only endorses students’ works when they look like his.
Also if you want to learn more abt exaggerating the figure look at the comic book artists Matessi is inspired by - Walt Simonson, Todd Macfarlane, etc
