The Geese frontman proves himself as a fantastically oddball solo artist on Heavy Metal.

8/10 theneedledrop....
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
YES!! I was afraid you were gonna skip this one!
So many yellow flannels, I'm starting to think Fantano's secretly a minion
Joking aside, it's nice to see 2025 off to a good start music-wise.
EDIT: Yep, now I see this came out in 2024.
@@AlexKawa20 2024 really was a peak in music since the 2017-18 era
@@ghastly17 Yeah, it was really good. 2025 is off to a good start, too.
a fact in case you didnt know, yellow flannel usually mean good album to fantano
:O
“Better late than never” ahh review here, Melon.
@@j-mersh6572 ahh “ahh” ahh 💀😭🙏
@@idleskatingahh “ahh “ahh” ahh” ahh💀
Look who can’t say ASS
Review ahh melon 😂
"ahh" cringe ass lil yt boy.
That one chord in Drinking age is maybe my favourite moment in any song I heard last year. There's such a devastating sense of resignation to it.
The vibraphone(?) at 1.25 really gets me
Easily one of my top three favorites last year
Drinking Age is absolutely incredible
YES, that has to be the best track on the album for me. It makes me feel like I am sat on a balcony watching the stars lmao
Brat Summers out its time for Cameron Winter
Underrated comment
totally not a stolen joke
@TroublingGem40 I mean I’m sure someone else said it, its not very clever
Diamond spring, Brat summer, Peggy autumn, Imaginal winter...
Good to know god is actually real
he's not kidding this time
He wouldn't joke about that
Fr fr this time
very much so
crazy how so many people don't believe him
I've been waiting for this review and was starting to think he wasn't going to do it! This has truly become my favorite album ever, and the more people that hear about it and listen to it the better. Simply a magical experience.
Yeah, the more I listen to it the more I think it’s an all time great record.
@@GregorBarclay same here. gets better with every listen. always more stuff to hear, the instrumentation is so lush.
Dude I’ve had this album on repeat recently and it’s become one of my favorites. I fucking love this album
same here man. I thought it was pretty good when it first came out and i first listened to it. Then, recently, I put it on again just to give it another spin and it clicked completely with me. Every song is so absolutely beautiful, whether you're listening actively or passively. The atmosphere created by the instrumentals along with his vocals are just so incredibly pretty and emotional and devastating. I like it a lot better than anything Geese has put out. Probably my second favorite album of 2024, behind The New Sound. Strong 9 for me, only because there is a slight lull in the album at Try As I May and Cancer Of The Skull, even though I do still really enjoy both of those.
"My dad walked out on me-rock" will now be in my lexicon's regular rotation.
No way he actually reviewed this… God really actually might be real
I'm going to be listening to this album until the conga line behind me is a thousand chickens long.
Yellow flannel inflation is crazy, a month straight of 8s
There’s more and more music released each year, he focuses mainly on releases he likes outside of mainstream ones- so if there’s tons of great releases (because there’s tons of releases in general) aren’t the scores obviously gonna go up?
@@elstovonexactly
This came out a while ago, he is late
@@elstovonso I did the stats on melon's Avg review score and amount of reviews, and he varies the between years thru he does do more favorable reviews, which kinda makes sense as if your a music critic reviewer wouldn't rather hear music you like while testing out between different genres to get a more varied platte for music. Outside of that 2015 was the did the most reviews and since than it have been going up and down between 220-250
Bout damn time! This was my album of the year last year (very suddenly stealing the trophy from Greep last minute). It's possibly the most unique thing I've heard in ages. Cameron is a force of nature in both his voice and pen, not to downplay the gorgeous production as well.
I gave it an 8 on first listen, a 9 on the third, a 10 by the fourth, and by the sixth, I was frustrated I couldn't bump the score any higher! Now I'm, what, fifteen to twenty listens in? Not counting the countless times I've sang the album all the way through while at work. Completely phenomenal, Cameron deserves more recognition as a once in a generation artist
Hahah; that’s EXACTLY what happened to me. Greep was my album of the year by a mile, then this dropped just before Christmas and blew me away.
...chicos, de verdad es raro lo que comentan, peor con mi álbum del año como el de papi Geordie...
I thought it was such a shoe-in! No one coulda possibly made something made something that'd impact me as much as Greep!
...
Thanks a lot Cameron, couldn't have waited a month? >:(
more 8s this year than denzel curry’s discography
they don't count because most are from 2024 records he missed
This didn't come out this year, watch the actual video 😭
denzel shawarma
You know, I have a hunch there will be a lot of great new music coming out of the US and maybe Europe in the next few years
Had no idea this guy was the frontman for Geese. Now I got to check this out!
3D Country is such an amazing album!
You may end up liking Geese more than his solo work. His voice fits so well with their style of rock.
@@CoolGuyClubGuitarNoises Personally I got into Geese before this album came out, but I like Heavy Metal way more than anything Geese has done, and I really like 3D Country. Heavy Metal is just on another level of songwriting and instrumentation.
Amazing he managed to do an entire album covering every Heavy Metal song in history! Truly impressive 1.3 billion hour EP here.
Love his ram ranch cover
Nina + Field of Cops might be my favourite song of all time
its so chaotic and great
this album has lived on my turntable since i got it in the mail on like december 20th. i cant stop listening to it almost every day. even the "weaker" songs i cant get enough of when framed in the complete album. absolutely no skips. even tho a lot of the lyrics are enigmatic and dense (and i love it), the very simple ones cut through so beautifully. "nina im not nothing but when you lie on the piano i am reminded i am stupid" and "i need your feet more than you do" are ones that particularly get me. in the comment on one of his videos someone said "what a generational talent with a kaleidoscopic soul." so true! LOVE THIS ALBUM!! Cameron winter forever! geese band forever!
The coincidence of me listening to this for the first time then he drops this video is crazy
“Love takes miles. Love takes years.” I’m always a sucker for space=time poetry
Geordie Greep from black midi dropping solo album
Cameron Winter from Geese dropping solo album
Isaac Wood solo album when?
We can dream
Considering that those two albums are my favorites of 2024, and I love BCNR, i fuckin wish.
Finally!! Album of the year for me by far
Saw his solo live show in Chicago earlier this month. This dude’s voice is unreal, love this album. “I’m gonna eat my keys” - Cameron Winter
This basically proves the existence of a higher power, seeing a lyrical passage confirming it in the least lyrical way possible. Or not…
I love this album. I have been listening to it more than any other album since it's release. I also want to mention I had never even heard of Geese when I stumbled upon this album thanks to the algorithm.
It's weird to be living in such a shitty fucking time but the movies and music and games are so good.
Hard times often created good art
That's [checks notes]...all of history.
We’re thinking the same thing erasure, gotta give that one another listen if you felt like it went nowhere because that ending with the strings make me feel like no other song has, favourite on the record. whole song is so interesting production wise, i love the percussive frog sounds and distorted toms, the groove is so delicate, the song feels like it’s barely holding itself in in such a beautiful way.
agreed! it really grew on me once i heard the live in chicago version (the full concert can be found on youtube)
i think the song's length and spot on the album is what turns people away, its a lot more difficult on the ears than Cancer of the Skull but wow is the song so good
Agreed. Criminally underrated track by many just because it’s a more straightforward acoustic ballad. I find the theme of the song very wholesome and romantic but expressed in a unique way. And as you said, the recording tricks make the whole experience interesting. The closeness of the guitar and the way the chord is subtlety changing, combined with the absurd romantic lyricism. it almost reminds me of Nick Drake.
2025 is the year of yellow flannels I guess
he's catching up with the yellow flannels he missed last year lol
i can smell the yellow flannel through the screen at this point
This album caught my attention from some random writer who said this 22yr old kid made this album at Guitar Center. So I had to check it out, but it became pretty obvious that there had to be a fairly significant producer attached to this. Very unique voice. I like how he can take his very honest baritone and go from sounding half off then have it go up to such a tender little RnB tenor. He doesn't stay in that pocket very long, but the times he does it's amazing.
Anthony, just because it's called heavy metal doesn't mean you had to dead lift for 10 minutes screaming "Brian Jones"
His show in Chicago was legendary. What a guy. Album is in my top 3 of all time
literally every person i know that has listened to this album (myself included) has had the same experience of being offput by it the first listen and then going back in and just being floored. a truly bizarre and beautiful (and depressing) record.
I was recommended this album by my mate this morning and I would say it’s the best album I’ve heard in years
Rejoice boys!
Surprised to no hear / see any comparisons to Tom Waits I feel like the rambling songwriting style fits perfectly with the Rain Dogs era canon, but maybe I'm the only one who hears Winter as Waits with a lozenge in his mouth.
"drinking age" has been growing up in me since it came out. easily one of the best experiencies I've had in my life...
It’s a masterpiece
FINALLY
THANK. YOU. ANTHONY.
I never knew this dude was the frontman of geese! I was really liking his singles songs back when they first came out. It’s so obvious listening to them back haha
this album has completely changed my life. i've never cried more tears
I like Cameron as a singer because he keeps it so interesting by pushing his voice into all different places. His lyrics keep me intrigued too.
In my opinion, this album is way better and more innovative than the Geese album. One of my favs in the last year.
So happy to see him getting more critical recognition on this record. Such a fantastic album.
I didn't really like Geese, so I didn't have expectations for this record. Even so, I didn't care much for it initially, but upon revisiting Ive come to really enjoy it! Got tickets to see him in March.
HE DID IT HE DID IT HE REALLY REVIEWED IT! YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!
I think for many like me this has become my retroactive album of last year.
This thing is like picking up a basketball for the very first time and pulling up from three with perfect form and just fucking drilling it. Nothin but net. Mike Breen “Bang!”. Teammates smacking your hands. Lebron crying. Just not much to improve there.
I cannot wait for Cameron’s next work. Not to mention that his two singles he released prior to the album are LITERALLY some of the most beautiful and destructive songs I have ever heard. I think if he would have swapped a few of the weaker songs with those two, it would be hard not to call the record a ten. The singles are quite different than the album though, so I get the decision.
Oh my goodness i did not expect Anthony to review this album, it's so good
Thanks for looking out for all us oddball singer/songwriter buffs out here!
IT SHOULD BE A 10
every video gets a comment like this lol
I hope he still reviews the Kim Deal record that came out near the end of last year too
rlly digging this one.
I’ve never heard of Geese but I’ve been absolutely loving this album
Check out their second album, 3d country is really great. Different to this though.
Hell yes I’m so happy to see you review this album
I saw this dude headlining the king gizzard show in NY last year bro their live music sounds JUST like the studio album version
Saw him perform in Chicago earlier this month. Incredible.
does this mean we'll get a review of the other "heavy" singer songwriter album of last year?
heavy rocks
Not actually a Geese fan but love this record. Quite surprised at Fantano’s initial reaction as it got me instantly
I don’t check out every album Fantano reviews, but I’m really glad I listened to this one. Phenomenal album.
“My-dad-walked-out-on-me rock” is definitely my new favorite genre
This album makes me think Geese is unironically Swans-pilled
love this album. best surprise in a while and the best thing i have heard this year even though it came out right at the end of 2024.
Dear Anthony, can you please review the Dummy record, also from last year. I was really impressed by it. Gr.
FINALLY I THOUGHT YOU WEREN'T GONNA DO IT
L. This shit a 10. Best album of 2024
I heard their Chicago show with Racing Mt. Pleasant (formerly Kingfisher) was really awesome
Listened to this album while I put up my Christmas tree and it really tied things together for me
I'm curious about your thoughts on Nillüfer Yanya's Method Actor. It's really one of the best albums of last year, imo.
Is RUclips trying to get me to switch off dark mode or something
Ahhhhh yeah. Learned about them when they opened for Gizz and knew he'd put out some more dope stuff. Love it.
So many yellow flannels so early into the year!!! Lets hope the rest of the year is this strong 👍
I'VE PRAYED FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
I get parallels to Adrienne Lenker
Adrianne Lenker is not nearly as weird
Saw him perform this in a little church in brooklyn. He saluted the cross before he started.
FINALLY THIS REVIEW! One of my favorites from last year
Layers upon layers of raw talent and effortless creativity. I like to jump to conclusions for fun, and I choose to believe Cameron is going to be one of the next big great immortal songwriters.
This year will be even better than last year.
2025 is the year of the yellow flannel
Literally just finished my first listen earlier today! $0 is genuinely a landmark track that will become a touchstone of 2020’s music. IN…..credible!!!
Will there ever be a review of Alexander Gregory Kent’s Solo material by any chance ?
Hell yeah, Glad you got to it, I've been listening on repeat since it dropped
My vinyl literally arrived today and now this! Melon really knows me
Anthony, if I may suggest a review, DIA by Ela Minus is a great record. Certified yellow flannel
I’m loving this album! Thanks for the Recc!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW
This album is genuinely becoming one of my favourites of all time. It's so damn good.
FINALLY MELON FINALLY
Cal is not gonna be allowed to take the yellow flannel to the dry cleaners for a while.
Drinking age is a great song
So glad you finally reviewed
$0 man is so goated
this review being this late gives me hope for monarch of monsters
I liked this record, and I think the songwriting is absolutely stunning, but his singing voice is an acquired taste for sure. Maybe one I’m not quite sure about yet.
This was my album of the year in the end, I couldn't belive how good it was
lots of comments on so many yellow flannels. but theres just so much good music coming out lately.
I think this and that xiu xiu album were my 2 favorites from last year
Wtf is this man's singing, I love it
cameron winter made me believe in art again
You should review "Ring" by The Connells, the album really deserves more recognition
LETS GOOOOOOO CAMERON WINTER APPRECIATION
