Yeah, he's able to speak on it very intelligently and has a good view of the big picture of music. I don't really like his stuff but I really appreciate the mind it came from and it's significance in music as a whole.

For being in one of the biggest rock bands ever in the last twenty years, Mike Shinoda is probably one of the chillest and easy going dudes I’ve seen interviewed by Melon and this was just a pleasant watch
I'm so happy they navigated this conversation in a civil way as opposed to reactionary or just getting mad at each other, which very easily could've happened. This was one of the most satisfying interviews I've seen in a long time.
Here for Mike! A Thousand Suns is my favorite album. I started listening when I was a 12 year old girl and never stopped. I’m a 25 year old woman now who’s favorite band will always be Linkin Park
I really love Linkin Park. It should be a musician's band. Every band member is a beast and so talented and smart about the industry. It's wild to me that people who love music can't even admit that. Also stage presence and overall competency. People are insane.
i cant tell you how much it warms my heart seeing how much 1000 suns love i’m seeing in these comments. been saying since it came out that it was one of the most slept on albums and that years down the line people would realize how fucking good it was and god damn it i was right. shit’s fire tbh. like, seriously, if you havent listened to it since it came out, go back to it. we weren’t ready for it.
I have properly discovered LP right after ATS came out(I have heard all the singles growing up, of course), and while I started with Meteora and HT, I have later found myself enjoying their later albums way more, I bumped A Thousand Suns so much and argued about how good it is for quite a while. And it was really an unpolular opinion back then. People were looking at Minutes to Midnight the same way, even though it is so well composed and just full of well arranged and interesting songs. Even now I am enjoying HT and Meteora way less than most of the stuff that came after, excluding One More Light. Also, the Hybrid Theory EP was something else. When I have found it I was consumed by it, the darkness in the songs there is almost physically tangible. I am glad to see that people are starting to "get" ATS.
I definitely feel that their later albums are much better. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are very well-crafted and ahead of their time sonically, but they were very juvenile lyrically, and no matter how innovative their sound was, it was always going to be a product of the cringy nu-metal days. The fact that they evolved beyond the nu-metal scene, which was already on its way out, and dared to be more than just another rock band proves that they were truly a one-of-a-kind group. There was a lot of growth on Minutes To Midnight, and they matured into the band that made A Thousand Suns. If their core fanbase hadn't been angry white boys who just wanted another Hybrid Theory to angst out to, I think the album would have been received better.
It makes me happy that people came around to it finally, because I remember the ungodly amount of backlash it got on release very vividly. Broke my teen heart really, because I really liked it and everyone seemed to hate it to the core.
@@RyanStorey1231 I don't think talking about things like suicide, self-worth, depression, relationships and so on is being "juvenile lyrically". If anything LP is one of the few bands that could actually tackle these subjects and make it sound sincere and genuine unlike many bands around the time.
i love how mike is a worldwide known artist , has been in the industry for like 30 years and still aint no narcissist, unlike most musicians. keep on shining my man
Mike is such a gem, Linkin Park was my first love musically for as long as I could remember. Of course Hybrid Theory and Meteora are classic LP albums but I could argue so are the rest of them. Over the years, the more I listen to a minutes to midnight or a thousand suns or Living Things, the more I love them. At first I didn't listen to them thoroughly but now there's definitely bangers on those albums.
For sure. Millions of records sold, tons of hits, still extremely relevant and influenced TONS of new bands. In 2025 when they are eligible, I imagine 1st ballot hall of famers
holy shit 36:32 Mike talking about the moment on the one more light review where Anthony said Linkin park were just making trendy music because it was trending

@@dariolema2722 People talk about The Hunting Party more than Living Things because THP is hated lol, Living things is considered a good/meh album. Personally I love both albums
35:06-35:37 - 31 seconds of Absolute Truth from a person who actually Knows what he is talking about! I mean, Ive always thought LInkin Park are cool guys who used to make music I love, but hearing some of Mikes overall takes, and Especially that half a minute it truly reaffirms my stance about, at the very least, Mike as an Actual Artist. Hopefully one day he might want to re-take his place in those charts and try to show the Other side of the art form - just like back in the early 2000s...
Linkin Park was my first and last "favorite band" growing up. I remember being like 5 and loving Hybrid Theory. I remember being confused but excited with Minutes to Midnight but then learning to love it over the year after it came out (and my mom bought me the censored copy cuz I was still younger lol). Then when ATS came out it in my mind solidified why LP will always be my favorite band. That album is one of the best albums of all time imo. I remember going on a vacation with my family to Myrtle Beach when LIVING THINGS came out and being super hype. It's just been such a wild ride. I love how genuine the band always has been with Chester and especially Mike. I'm glad this interview happened. I'm very happy right now. :)
Meteora got me into guitar when I was 12-13. Sure, the riffs were simple like Mike said, but I was still pumped to learn and practice them every day. I would pop in the CD, sit in front of the radio, and just jam the fuck out. It was great. Mad respect to Mike and all of LP.
Honestly as a huge LP fan I didn’t like A Thousand Suns for a while but I got into it again and now it’s one of my top favourite albums. Also Hunting Party is one of my favourite things ever, it got me through the hardest years of my STEM degree. Love Mike so much
I think Linkin Park has a lot of great albums, and some of them still get some recognition, but I think Reanimation is unjustly underrated. Sure, it's all remixes of Hybrid Theory, but I actually prefer a lot of them over the originals. It's more hip-hop, more electronic, it has incredible guest artists, and listening to it from start to finish is still a journey, from the opening to the closing Krwlng melody. I'm a lot more interested in hip-hop than I was in middle school, and listening to it with a more hip-hop appreciating lens really brings out new lights and nuances in its content. Reanimation was the album I had on my original Xbox, it was one of my favorite albums to listen to on my bus rides to school. Now, years later, I don't listen to LP 1/10th as often as I used to, having branched out in my musical preferences, but man, does that album hold up to this day.
Mike is such an authentic, nice and talented guy. I was a HUGE LP fan, it was the album that got me into music. RIP Chester and Mike is the best. much love.

Wow, I ended up really watching the whole thing and it didn't even feel like an hour. Guess it was the fond memories of listening to LP and Mike in general. Great interview Melon.
Man almost everything he said was so honest and insightful. The thing about young artists having an edge due to their particular propensities that would read as amateurish or low-fidelity to others is interesting. Not only is it the case when upcomers work with bigger producers does there sound become too polished or overworked, It's sometimes the extreme or gritty or low fidelity that we are want anyway. A really good recent example is the Artist Eyedress. The guitars are quite considered and especially drone which isn't crazy but what stood out to me was just how amateurish or crappy his beats are. Sometimes the kick and snare barely relate to each other tonally and they're usually quite quiet or drowned in the mix. It reminds me actually of MY bloody valentines Loveless, where the drum hits are barely there, which enhances the tubular, ambient and looseness of the proceeding sonics. I just would never think to throw some half-ass, almost ironically played out drum beat like that together, but it definitely slaps.
I got so excited when I saw this pop up, I know Melon hates what LP/Shinoda has done recently but they are literally my favorite band of all time. A Thousand Suns is my favorite album of all time, it really was such a unique and different sounding album and it inspired me to even start making music myself, thanks for this Melon
MELON Why is this Interview 1 hour long I could listen to this absolute majestic specimen remark upon his musical career for goddamn days this is a mere strip tease

I've always felt like A Thousand Suns was the last album that Linkin Park made that was what they really wanted to do, and everything after was a response to the reception of previous albums. - Living Things "Fans think we strayed too far from the Hybrid Theory style, let's mix that old style with A Thousand Suns" - Hunting Party "Oh shit, fans didn't really like the electronic stuff, let's just make a really heavy album" - One More Light "Fans wanted heavy but didn't like Hunting Party, fuck the fans, let's just cater to radio with the most generic possible pop we can think of" As a result, those 3 last studio efforts feel incredibly forced to me. That's just my perception, and I can't fault the band if these last 3 albums were really them just doing what they wanted to do, no holds barred. But A Thousand Suns was the last studio album that felt genuine to me and I haven't been able to enjoy their latest releases as much. Rebellion is a cool song. So is Guilty All The Same. Or Roads Untraveled. Roads Untraveled is great. But that's it for me.
The drummer from Death Grips was the drummer for Hella, from Sacramento, but also Team Sleep, funny enough. A side project started by Chino Moreno from Deftones and a few other people. Had many guests. The album took forever to release due to other commitments. But it's still amazing! Zach is insane! Hella too!
A Thousand Suns is an interesting one. I didn't really listen to it at the time because it was so different from my expectation of what a LP album was supposed to be, but in recent years it's become one of my favorites.
This was amazing. Glad you guys did this. Despite the hate LP has gotten, they'll always be the band that got me into Metal music. I now listen to Tool, Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders, Mastodon, etc. It's just amazing to have gone on this journey which I'm still on. I enjoy going back and listening to everything. I've always made it a thing to listen to new LP for old times sake. I didn't love everything but that's fine. I've also learned to love other music which eventually led me to like LP stuff which I didn't before. A Thousands Suns is just so amazing to me now. And since I listened to it when it released, it's also nostalgic now. Even if I wasn't super into at the time, I gave it a few listens and now it takes me back to that time when I was listening to lots of new music for me. Anyways, thank you so much Mike! I was a massive fan as a teen, wanting to have your spikey colored hair 😂. Never permanent but I did try sprays and colored gels. Fun times the early 2000s. 🤣

Bon Jovi my ass, LP was pop but also heavy AF. They were fucking Star Wars. Kudos to them.
For being in one of the biggest rock bands ever in the last twenty years, Mike Shinoda is probably one of the chillest and easy going dudes I’ve seen interviewed by Melon and this was just a pleasant watch

It's Going Down is pretty good from a rapping standpoint, and well every other standpoint.
I love how suddenly everyone's digging out those LP reviews and statements from him lmao
Well this is awkward 😬😬😬
bruh this comment was real, right?
I'm so happy they navigated this conversation in a civil way as opposed to reactionary or just getting mad at each other, which very easily could've happened. This was one of the most satisfying interviews I've seen in a long time.
Mike is literally the best. No one's as cool as him. Thanks, that was my hot take.
@@RyanStorey1231 Fully agree, really unfortunate that the fan base was just too edgy to appreciate Linkin Park changing their sound
I think this is the best RUclips video ever. I occasionally rewatch this, because this is so wholesome. Thanks, Melon
Linkin park is responsible for a large chunk of my taste in music. Influential isnt a strong enough word man
I just wanna give Mike Shinoda a big hug and thank him for my adolescent soundtrack.
Meteora is a ten and a classic. Admit it, Fantano!
Really loved Meteora, even more than Hybrid Theory.
Meteora was literally flawless.
i love how mike is a worldwide known artist , has been in the industry for like 30 years and still aint no narcissist, unlike most musicians. keep on shining my man
Yep he is so humble, I'll always love him
Mike is such a gem, Linkin Park was my first love musically for as long as I could remember.
Linkin park deserves to be in the Rock n roll hall of fame
For sure. Millions of records sold, tons of hits, still extremely relevant and influenced TONS of new bands. In 2025 when they are eligible, I imagine 1st ballot hall of famers

Hunting Party was underrated.
It does sound like some middleaged dudes trying to recapture the spark former glorydays, but forgot how to, to put it meanly, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't enjoy it when Hunting Party came out, at least to some degree.

This is the first interview I actually watched start to finish
Same
Honestly, Mike Shinoda is above this kind of self deprecation for Fantano and his fans’ sake
I actually like the Crawling remix over the original.
Mike is such an authentic, nice and talented guy. I was a HUGE LP fan, it was the album that got me into music. RIP Chester and Mike is the best. much love.

It's sorta lame that people can't actually engage in music-related discourse because they're too busy recycling tired, old memes in the comments

It's time to revisit A Thousand Suns, which is, in fact, Linkin Park's best album.
I wouldn't go that far but it's good.
preach brother
Yess sirrrr
I've always felt like A Thousand Suns was the last album that Linkin Park made that was what they really wanted to do, and everything after was a response to the reception of previous albums.
- Living Things "Fans think we strayed too far from the Hybrid Theory style, let's mix that old style with A Thousand Suns"
- Hunting Party "Oh shit, fans didn't really like the electronic stuff, let's just make a really heavy album"
- One More Light "Fans wanted heavy but didn't like Hunting Party, fuck the fans, let's just cater to radio with the most generic possible pop we can think of"
As a result, those 3 last studio efforts feel incredibly forced to me.
Living Things is my favorite. I feel its underrated
