16-Year-Old Red Gerard's Ultimate Backyard Snowboarding Park | Insight

- Perhaps the most versatile snowboarder his age and a constant combination of positivity and good times, Red’s stigma as a contest kid has not yet been shaken, but his snowboarding outside the judged realm demonstrates competition is but one outlet for a large bundle of energy in a compact package.
Red is one of seven Gerard kids, and thanks in part to good-natured and unrelenting ridicule from a few of his brothers, the attitude of this rising star has remained unusually humble, while the influence from these same senior siblings has progressed his snowboarding to include facets beyond those of many of his peers.
His house in Summit County, Colorado, is home to a backyard park, complete with a rope tow powered by a well-worn 50cc dirt bike. Here, he dials in technical rail tricks on hand-crafted lips and perfects progressive double corks on the jump lines down the road at Breckenridge.
At 16, Red is the youngest member on the Insight roster and a welcome piece in the larger puzzle that is modern snowboarding. His segment in the film is a milestone-something he’s been working toward for quite some time. When Red got the call to film for Insight he couldn’t believe it. “I’m just so happy; I couldn’t be more happy. I wanted this to happen so bad. This is a dream come true,” he says.
Keep an eye out for Red’s full part dropping this later this fall.

Props to his supportive parents. That's how you let your kid become the best at what he does.
j1bone I completely agree
Easy when you have a multimillion dollar home and property lol
@@user-jp1uf2yn8h yeah, doesn't change the fact they still support him. They could be rich and not provide anything for him.
I have never been this jealous of someone in my life. What a guy
Me too.
Ivar Danielsson same
Ivar Danielsson same bro
Same like WTF doesn't he need to go to school
Ivar Danielsson same
This kid lives the dream! He doesn't know how lucky he is, I hope he puts it to good use
He obviously is he's like 12 and good enough to ride freestyle in the Olympics
It LITERALLY says he is 16 in the title
If a gold medal is putting it to a good use, I'd say he did
He did. He just won the first Gold Medal for the US team in Korea.
hurpadurp, its a 1 year old comment
Worked great on about 6"-8" of average snow starts to struggle a bit past 8". ruclips.net/user/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN Very light weight and the chute spin control works well. For the low price you get a ton of value. My only complaint is managing the cord as it does take a fair bit of effort to watch and pull the cord out of the way. I found myself having to whip the cord out of the way a lot when I needed to make one way passes to mange the blow direction. It's less of an issue when you can work both directions. A battery powered version would be a lot easier to handle but that is also double the price and requires battery care. I chose the corded version so I didn't have to worry about batteries but I do now see how much work the cord is. I let my neighbor borrow it and it outperformed his smaller gas blower, he was totally sold. Very pleased with the power and operations. My only suggestion is to spend a bit more on a cordless version if you have budget for it. The cord is a bit more of a headache than I thought it would be. Very pleased with the Snow Joe brand and quality.
Also dad goals
Yes
So be a man and head to Jay Peak or Whiteface. Awesome powder, crazy slides and glades.
If this was my backyard you'd never see me again. You'd maybe see me at the grocery store but that's it. This is such a sick setup.
And to consider he grew up to be an olympic gold medalist... he’s seriously one of the coolest guys ever. He doesn’t take what he’s doing too serious and seems to genuinely like what he’s doing. Good for him, hope he wins again in the next olympics.
Yeah I would say though that if I were a pro snowboarder I would be mad. You pay all that money to get good and this guy has just been practicing in his dads backyard the whole time lol
"grew up to be" he won it a year after this video came out, he was still a kid lol
This kid has way more money and resources than any kid that has to travel to practice
And now he is a gold medal Olympian
Nat B yes was gonna comment that but then found your comment
I'm pretty jealous rn not going to lie
Brayden Morin rt
Who knew that he would win a gold medal in the Olympics
Yes, gorgeous property!
Me too
The privilege of the wealthy. No poor kids ever get to the Olympics. Think about it.
the kid is so chill! it's good to see someone who's privileged and just recognizes it, stays grounded, and moves on
he took advantage of it and still stayed 10 toes down. No one could hate
All those hours hanging out with his buddies in the backyard just shredding, and look where he is now! Olympic gold!
if you watch this video you just want to go out in you own backyard and build a park. So inspirational👌
wow such a nice place to live, house and countryside wise
***** haha vo wo weisch du jetz dass ich us de Schwiz bin?
*winter home lol
man that has to be the best back yard
Genuinely happy for this kid. He has what most don't and that is a good thing he shares what he is got. Also hella jealous haha.
THIS GUY JUST WON GOLD IN THE WINTER OLYMPICS !!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
His parents are rad. Having that setup is a dream!
Looks like the backyard payed off
And now he’s an Olympic athlete with a gold medal
remember watching this when it came out. had to come back when he won the olympics. time flies
Yeah time does really fly
Dude just won at the olympics!...
I wish I could turn my backyard hobby into Olympic gold!
Actually so sick!
43 years on this earth and dozens of times talking to my friends about doing this. This is one of the best lives that I've ever seen lived. That old 50cc motor cycle lift is perfect.
Love watching my grandson Judd Henkes doing his thing....it's just so much fun and I'm so glad that he loves his sport!
Watching this a year ago, I would never have guess that he would be a competition snowboarder, let alone win the Olympics, insane.
Gets gold in the olympics 2 years later...
Back in about 2012 took a drive up the back hill to trailhead, coming down I see bunch of kids boarding, stop in my truck on road to watch, kids see me, give them a thumbs up and they wave back. It was Red's house pre gold medal. Lived a few blocks away couple season before buying home outside town.
Its cool to see someone that young, shred hard and remain humble
the kids pretty good I think he might win an Olympic gold medal sometime
He already did lmao
@@alexanderflee9113 that’s the point
He’s 20 now...
I mean it has been 4 years so no shlt
@@phatdaddylag6930 lol
I’ve almost made it a tradition to watch it every year
How Olympians are made. Supportive parents and a hell of a lot of time at work.
This is truly a so-called home-made champion... Congrats Red!!
Awesome. I had a huge sledding hill a block from my house in Alaska growing up and learned how to snowboard and most of my tricks on n that hill. I was there almost every day after school. The run from top to bottom was about the length of a football field so we had several kickers built that we hit on the way down. It was nice practicing tricks there and then going to the resort and busting them out like a pro.
and now he's a gold medalist!
Congrats on the Gold medal! I guess a backyard park is what it takes to be the best.
This is a real cool dude! Snowboarders seem to have the best out look on things, so laid back, chill, fun!
wtfff fam I'm stuck in fucking nj and my backyard is tiny as shit
hahaha same
hahaha yup, mountain creek ice runs are pretty much as good as it gets for me
+Eric Rodriguez yep ahahaha
+Dean Surgent hahah it's a fuckin Bob sled course up there every damn year lmao. I'm out here like cool runnings while this kid has a doper setup in his backyard lol smh
+Eric Rodriguez id pay a mountain creek full day lift ticket price to sesh this kids backyard for 2 hours
Guy just won a god damn olympic gold medal.. congrats kiddo
This is the backyard that brought america gold
haha the last part when he is talking about where he wants to see snowboarding go just made me smile. Little does he know he's gonna win the Olympics. so cool.
Hey look it's Dewey from Malcom in the middle
Anyone watching this video because this kid just won a gold medal at the olympics
That is sooooo cool. Enjoy every minute of it young man.
Dude! Great inspiration! After seeing that, Im going to build my own ultimate backyard for snowboarding! Thanks man!
Would love to visit your place one day ;)
I fucking wish I had that much land and snow lol
*Goals* 😍😍😍
This video is such a blast from the past. I think I had a physical magazine subscription when it just came out. I was so jealous of this kid. Including the fact het got to go to Super Park. Cool stuff!
Just started 1 year ago, this is my second, year. I love it. Should of done it when I was younger. I'm 55 now and its all I want to do. I'm not, very good at it and don't do the flips but I really enjoy it a lot.
What happens? This cool dude kills it at the Olympics and brings home Gold.
That is what happens.
lucky dude, i wish i could move from cleveland and have this!
Hell yea nice to see all these gold medalists so close to home, vail and summit CO!!! ❤️❤️
Shred that gnar
He is like such a genuine good kid I love it
i get like no snow where I live and my garden is flat :(
Savi 102 😂😂😂😂😂😂
snowboard savi in Wisconsin near mke, we get lots of snow, then on 1 warm day,it melts
brady093093 you kinda do
Ya kinda don't lol
Move to Finland bro
daaaaamn, you re so Lucky
Awesome....and now GOLD! Congrats!!!!
This guy is a great example of what comes from dedication, open mindedness, and being dedicated. Kids, learn from it. Get focused, do what you need to do, and what you want to do. Then find out.
cuz of his parents hard work! he is learning!!
RED FOR THE GOLD 🥇
Just looked out of my window. There is a drunk hobo in my backyard
Genius idea for a rope tow!!
Watching this again after the Olympics, so awesome !
live in wisco, nowhere to go here. but going out to keystone and a basin in jan. got a new board for the adventures!
devils head is pretty lit, plus they just added a new terrain park and it is insane!!
its about 45 minutes from madison
Live in Wisco too. The closest ski resort to me is Christie Mountain and its lame as shit. Plan on going to Trollhagen in Osceola way more instead. Its going to be a longer trip though.
im going to keystone in march!
I love devils head! Going there in a couple of weeks
Meanwhile im 23 and just got 6h lesson done on how to snowboard. Fuck yeah :D
Yuhhh congrats Red on that gold medal 🤟🤟🤟
seriously one of the best videos i've ever seen
Man he's pretty cool eyes
Fuck being rich looks awesome
you dont have to be rich to live in a house like that
Yeah sure, not rich... they have a big ass house with a park in the winter.
And another house in the summer...
Poor guys i bet they dont even have a boat or a jet
Easley Easley so sorry man, completely missed the joke. You're in a RUclips comment being jealous of someone else's life. So sad.
Hey You mm :(
Im not rich and I have that it's possible ---------> C:\Users\Martin\Pictures\2012-02-27\GOPR0371.JPG
I have 4 cables on all the mountain, recently I made lights for night skiing and I have music at the base (the picture I took was at start when there were nothing and the mountain is higher behind me)
Best backyard that you can imagine!!
Great As Always !
May i please have the name of the song starting at 2:25?
Forreal
I was pretty lucky and spoiled growing up, but this...
TheBenderover69 I think he built this tuff himself. Not too hard to weld some rails. The only part he's lucky about is living with a hill like that
Eli Johnson the house itself is over 3 million
If I had a kid I would definitely spoil him if he had an interest like this, at least he's not a fat gamer sitting inside all day all night
Yeah his parents has money but he worked hard to get where he's at right now.
His parents might have a lot of money, but that doesn't mean that the money bought his skill...
And now he’s got a gold medal.... awesome
Coming back to this video after seeing it over a year ago. I could tell he was a great snowboarder, but I never expected he would win a gold medal.
Anyone know name and artist of song that starts at about 2:25?
Eric Rodriguez shazam doesnt even know
www.marmosetmusic.com/browse/18953-adoration
Brian Henderson thanks dude!!! 🙏🏻
the butthurt in these comments is real, the fact is that this kid shreds and is better than any of us would probably ever be at the sport
hes clearly talented yes, but when you have these kinds of accommodations you get good at things like this. Look at any of the other top guys, MOST of their families were fucking loaded and had access to things like this. like 40%skill and motivation 60% luck of the draw.
Jesse Cleary they all still put in the time though. And Many pros come from lower class backgrounds too you know
Shagun Ray If your a true good snowboarder, you don't need a two houses, a private jet to get to each one, and your own terrain park to become pro, the kid is spoiled, and acts like it's a normal life he's living.
Ian Willen and now he won a gold medal! Kinda deserves it
And now he just won the gold medal!!
beginning of a legend
I wonder what he would’ve thought of being in the Olympics in just 2 years
Who’s here after he got gold in Olympics
Dang I'm so jealous. This guy is living life. Props dude
straight passion man... from his backyard to a gold medal in the olympics.
ugh this is why I want a house like this
That must be one very rich family.
..or just workin and well organized family.
you dont need to be rich to buy a piece of farmland in the middle of no where
Now he is a gold medalist unbelievable
This guy is my hero now ... Iam really good at snowboarding but his tricks are ... just wow
i would love to have that back yard
wish i was loaded with money
TheScrubDesigns turn pro
This doesnt cost that much dude...its in the middle of no where in colorado
a house that nice with land anywhere in colorado is easily over a million USD
John Taylor lol not in Colorado
What a cool kid and blessed to have a place like that , congrats on the gold medal 🥇 I guess snowboarding is gonna take you wher you dream it to go
this is such a great vid ive watched it about 100 times
all i saw on the last jump was ssx3
That’s what happens when your born from a good family like that
Had something similar growing up in WI. Best times ever. If you have the opportunity to build...DO IT!
This park was meant to be made! It’s so amazing.
can i come over?
Hey I'm joe wanna be friends?
sure
no
sorry
i think he was asking the guy in the video as a joke lol
i wasn't talking to you but to the other two before me
This is awesome! just go for it 😀
