  • Discover fresh ideas for your Wizard with the magic of multiclassing.
I have an additional resource for you at FlutesLoot.com where you can read my in-depth Wizard multiclassing guide: www.flutesloot.com/wizard-mul...
Wizards have much to gain and little to lose when they multiclass! Spell selection is more important than class features, so you can build them as you wish. Many classes benefit more from multiclassing than from investing all twenty levels in themselves. Aside from optimization, multiclassing allows you to build interesting concepts for unique characters with outside-the-box specialties. Multiclassing can be useful for roleplaying, so do not make the mistake of thinking this guidance is only for min-max-style players. I try to be an enabler of unique gameplay rather than a prescriber of limited choices.

Hey, quick note on the not getting access to lvl 9 spells when multiclassing for more than 3 levels. If you multiclass into a caster (full caster, half caster or 1/3 caster, doesn’t matter), your spell progression is limited but not 0. As a wizard, you can still copy spells that you have spell slots for into your spell book. So you still get to use these 9th level spells, you just need to buy/find them yourself.

    • @FlutesLoot

I had to double check some rules since I found answers that either make half right or conflict completely. "You determine what spells you know and can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class". So a 16 Wizard + 4 Sorcerer can't prepare 9th level wizard spells. I found differencing answers whether you can add them to your book or not, but either way you can't prepare them.
There was apparently an errata to the PHB, "Your Spellbook (p. 114). The spells copied into a spellbook must be of a spell level the wizard can prepare." But my book doesn't say this and neither does a website I use so I don't know if that errata is real or not. Doesn't really change much unless you try to do work arounds with the Tasha school of magic Spellbooks which let you swap a spell prepared for another of a certain school of magic.

I really like a 15/5 Armorer/chronurgy you get 4th level artificer spells, and 3rd level wizard spells but count as a 13th level caster so you have 7th level slots which are good for upcasting counterspell or summon construct. You can get an absolutely obscene burst AC of 32 with just class features and spells (33 if warforged) and you can negate crits against yourself by forcing a re-roll, take Lucky if you really want to be impossible to hit since it can stack with the chronurgist's class ability
    AC calc
    Plate +2 infusion 20
Shield with repulsion shield infusion 23
ring and cloak of protection 25 and +2 to all saving throws
    Haste 27 for a minute
Shield spell 32 for a round

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! :) That AC is obscenely high, so thank you for describing it in detail! Multiclassing can be pretty fun to explore, and Artificers are still fresh enough for me to experience epiphanies for cool concepts.

      @136jab 3 года назад

@@FlutesLoot all of the AC buffs except for Shield can be obtained without multiclassing out of Artificer, and Shield doesn't require wizard, but the forced re-rolls and access to counterspell make this combo very enticing, 7th level counterspell and summon construct aren't too bad either, but summon construct is going to compete for concentration with haste.

I'm starting a Forest Gnome with the Inheritor Background at Artificer 1 then go level up to Divination Wizard 6, getting the War Caster feat along the way. At 8th level he'll go up to Artificer 5 to get Intelligence +2, as well as Artillerist Eldritch Cannon and Arcane Firearm so he can deal damage from the rear with cannons and the firearm. He'll also buff+protect teammates, control the battlefield with spells, and/or debuff boss monsters + enemy spellcasters.
After that (12th Level) he'll go up to Artillerist 5 + Diviner 15 if the game goes on to 20th level. He could also go to Artillerist 7 + Diviner 13 or Artillerist 8 + Diviner 12.

Great vid! I play a Battlesmith 3 / War Wizard 15 currently. Started Artie for Con Saves, Shield n Armor profs. INT and CON, splash of DEX, everything else is a dump stat. Mind Sharpener, Warcaster feat, high AC n Saves means you never fail a Concentration Check. The only downsides to the build is Wizard Hit Points, you never get Extra Attack, and your Steel Defender is really weak at higher levels. To cover those weaknesses, I took the Crusher Feat, Booming Blade and wield a Flail. Smack enemies into a Web, Evard's Tentacles or Sickening Radiance via Crusher's forced movement. Unless they have Reach, they can't even attack back without taking the extra Booming damage and that's assuming they aren't Restrained already. This is a powerful Controller build that can fight alongside Martials part-time and still be the Party Wizard full-time.

    • @FlutesLoot
      @FlutesLoot  2 года назад +1

That sounds really fun! And even if Steel Defender scales poorly without leveling, it can use its positioning to get in the way of enemies. Can the defender use a Ready action to prepare its movement to move in front of enemies during the enemy's turn?

I've multiclass my Bladesinger with Hexblade to have a Yin Yang approach to the build; mixing Tenser's Transformation with Eldritch Smite. Death Cleric X / Necromancy Wizard 2
The Death Cleric is a very strong, necrotic damage based blaster. 2 Levels in Necromancy Wizard give it the opportunity, to heal once per turn, whenever they kill a ceature. Since it is once per turn, it can theoretically heal on enemies turns through spells like Spirit Guardians. The Healing also increases by upcasting the spells. Also it gives some nice utility like Wizard Rituals (Find Familiar etc.) and defensive spells like Shield and Absorb elements which do not require one to invest heavy into intelligence.

    2. fighter 2- con save prof, armor prof and action surge to pull off spell combos.
    3. hexblade 1- to pull of captain magic missile evoker or to crit-fish with the scorching bugbear along with armor prof. take a 2nd level if you want invocations.
    4. twilight 1- to gain access to sacred flame for the wall of force + sacred flame combo and armor prof.
    5. clock or wild or divine sorc 2/3- to gain access to con save prof and metamagic. if level 2 only, pick up metamagic adept. clock sorcs are nice for restore balance vs. those with magic resistance and for abjurers due to armor of agathys access. wild magic is fun and tides of chaos can be used to boost saves/initiative. divine sorc gives you favored of the gods and access to guidance.

I just built a Bladesinger with an Artificer and thinking of dipping at least level 3 and pick up Battlesmith. With a high Intelligence and access to martial weapons and the right infusions(Enhanced weapon) and cantrips since 1 of bladesinger's attacks at level 5 can be a cantrip, can get good damage output. I started in Artificer to get the con saving throw. The character is level 7 right now(1 artificer and 6 bladesinger) and it is a good working so far. I know I can't take advantage of the medium armor and shields but with good build and spells, I think it will do well.

    • @FlutesLoot

That is really smart to start with an easy level of Artificer for Constitution saving throw proficiency. And it's always tempting to go enough levels in the 'dip' class to access a subclass. If it were me, I'd make the decision based on whether the campaign is going to level twenty. I'd be set on getting the Spell Mastery level-eighteen Wizard feature; I love that feature.

Transmutation is the art of change. Its magic can enhance or change the very nature of matter. So lean into that. Take spells that alter your abilities, give you a swim speed, allow you to fly, fall from great heights, etc. The big spell for this build is polymorph. Turn yourself or others into another creature is pretty awesome (see the pixie-T Rex combo). But what if you want to do so earlier than 7th level? Why become a Druid, of course! Two levels of Circle of the Moon gets you the 10th level of Transmuter subclass feature. At 3rd level. From that point on, just level up wizard. Your Wis has to be 13, but it should be anyway for Wis saving throws. For the druid spells, take transmutation spells that affect your allies or yourself. This frees up your wizard spells to be the ones cast on enemies. I like to think of this as an alchemist, not the artificer one, the anime one. The law of equivalent exchange, that sort of thing. Take your down time studying stuff to see what it's made of. Remember your capstone is Life Alchemy: Raise Dead, Restore Youth, Panacea, and Change Item! What good is Shapechanger when you have Wild Shape already? Flying and swimming speeds, of course! Polymorph is not restricted and you get a free casting. So Fly as an Eagle into the future.... Anyhoo, that's my build. Wizard 1, Druid 2 levels, then Wizard the rest of the way.

Off the top of my head, it seems best to start with two levels of Rogue, then get all your Enchantment Wizard levels before returning to Rogue. Your ability to hold monsters and charm people is really what you want, and cantrips will scale with you if you don't want to use a hand crossbow or something. It's not what I'd call an optimized build, but you can make it work.

Monk open palm 3 wizard scribe wizard 17 variant human for mobility. 13 int for the multiclass and pick up a headband of intellect, To sharpen your big brain. Pick up spells for augmenting your monk abilities booming blade, or green flame blade, sword burst, and something ranged like ray of frost or fire bolt aoe spells like burning hands or thunderwave or earth tremor make a ton of sense for you now. Because you can cast a spell for your action punch a guy for your bonus action and then run away 50 to sixty feet without provoking an attack of opportunity and then blast them with ray of frost so they're not getting to you without spending both move and action to reach you before you punch their lights out before doing it again.. Also spells like shield jump and longstrider are also good to have. Add an owl familiar with dragons breath for even more fun.
I could also see doing a human variant genie patron warlock pact of chain with the eldritch secrets feat from tasha's for unlimited silent image 3-6 levels and then going illusion wizard for the rest 14-17. You take an imp familiar for their durability and utility and then give them your vessel probably a ring. Point being you flavor this one as a witch sending her familiar to keep an eye on the party having her pop in and out when she feels it's necessary or when something they're doing interests her. You always have her cast silent image and minor illusion as she is leaving so it looks to the party or any on lookers that she is vanishing through a tear in space a door that is not there or that the door she does go through appears to be looking in on a witches hut interior but when the party opens it they find whatever space is actually behind the door. Into shadows behind a tree sauntering vaguely downward and other fun and improbable ways. Probably take the entertainer background to lend to her bravado. pick up spells that can be delivered through your familiar mainly voice of chain master and familiar investiture are musts for this build. Get plenty of control spells in addition to your main illusions and then have fun changing the battlefield with cantrips like mold earth or bonfire while you make people believe that they're looking at a battlefield of gaping chasms and flaming walls or fields of ice when in reality they're stepping on the spell grease falling in a five foot hole after you shook the ground with earth tremor and used a quickened mold earth to make. if one sees through the illusion and charges with friends you light up the grease and give the doubters pause make them question what is real. A ring of spell storing and or needles of spell tattoo used by the familiar are probably vital to this build for the amount of concentration some of these tricks will need even better if there's a second caster to get in on making the illusions real and dangerous.

Battle Smith 3, Bladesinger allows you to focus Int early instead of Dex as attack stat. I got the feeling sorlocks get with 1 stat ruling them all.

Currently playing a war wizard 8/knowledge cleric 1, im a frontline arcane commander kind of. i think im only gonna take 1 more level of cleric cuz we use a lot of downtime rules and the proficiencies will basically be infinite at that point. Base AC with no magic armor is 18. once i have durable magic ill have base 20 AC (22 with haste). just waiting for those 6th level spells to come online to take the 2nd level cleric (tasha's otherworldly guise is the perfect spell for my character, and because tasha doesn't exist in this game, the DM has already let me rename the spell). I'm never greedy with magic items and thus really only have 1 super notable one, but eventually i'll have some magic armor and i'll be dueling paladins with ease.

That sounds so fun! I enjoy playing a spellcaster with high AC, and I often recommend Wizards multiclass with Clerics specifically to gain heavy armor from particular Domains' 1st-level features (getting around the multiclassing limitation that would usually not allow heavy armor from it). I think it's fantastic that your group can utilize downtime, too. I've been writing heaps of content describing 5e rules that involve downtime.

@@FlutesLoot strongholds and followers by mcdm, and the UA downtime rules from pre-xanathars. its a good little system for our game. Working on creating a stone golem (that will take 2.4 years to finish). super stoked to have found your channel/site. lots of excellent ideas for players and DM's. (i run a few games myself, but not super regularly anymore, thanks covid)

@@ColinBauman I have S&F by MCDM as well! It's a great supplement. I believe my next homebrew campaign will have room for heaps of downtime, or otherwise speed up the time it takes to develop things during downtime. I believe that time is valuable for rooting players in the world and story as they explore it through their own exploits.

Great video, a lot of good points and insanely high quality!
though you just sitting there and talking was a bit boring, maybe edit in relevant images on what your talking about?

Thanks, SemanticShitposting! I've been trying to add more imagery to recent videos, so thank you for the feedback. We're getting more comfortable with editing, which means we're getting faster so we can take time to add imagery. We'll keep improving. We also prefer to use imagery that we can attribute in our video descriptions unless it's a gif from an obvious movie or something, but I know that's our own hang-up and not the norm of RUclipsrs. I recently found art I liked but couldn't find the 'original' to attribute, so I felt conflicted on whether to use it, for example. Anyway, thanks for commenting and subscribing. We won't let you down. :)

Thanks for the video! Can you tell me, please, some details? I can't open the link under the video.
If I choose Wizard and Artificer armorer, how much levels classes get? How to build characteristics, what pros and cons? Can I make War Wizard 17/ Artificer Armorer 3 and will it work?

Can you tell me please one thing: what to do when you are Artificer 1 with a plan to become Armorer? Everyone saying to use shield, but no one says about weapon. Before 3th level, I can't use my INT for atacks in melee. Do I take some STR to take some weapon, or DEX for dagger (only simple weapon with DEX atack), ot use magic with free hand?

Thanks, Mr. Lanier. Your feedback echoes my own thoughts on the video. I've been unhappy with how quickly I moved without taking measures to bring listeners/watchers along for the ride. @@FlutesLoot I don't think you "need" much. Just an image of your talking points or the abilities/spells/features in question. You would probably benefit from slowing down and stretching things out. This could easily have been a series of videos. I enjoyed what you had to say but there wasn't time or visual help to digest it and at some point I couldn't keep up without pausing. Unsolicited advice and criticism can be tough.
