Glenn, you really want to do White... Why not? It would look fantastic! 👌 What a Gem!! That was already a year old when I got into RC.... I still say I should have gotten one. Maybe the Blue one? My Stimulus Check will only go so far, and the Wife will only let me spend so much.... Definitely a fun project for you. Look forward to seeing her RUN!! Stay SAFE Bro! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I've got one! An original. Back from 1983 when I was 11 years old. Mine is blue. Dug it up from my parents house a few years ago. Ran it. Broke it. Just the other day I found and ordered new parts. Looking forward to getting it rolling again! You may have inspired me to do a full rebuild also. Enjoyed the video.
I really enjoyed watching this build. Restoring an original Subaru Brat is something I look forward to, and seeing all the details you provided will make it that much more enjoyable! As far as paint, I personally would go box art on any original legend, but yes , white does look great. Looking forward to seeing what you end up going with.
UGH! half shafts!!!!! I must have killed 100's of those on my old Blackfoot! The Brat looks great after you cleaned it up! thanks for sharing and hope to see the body done soon! PS I agree with the white body!
I would definitely keep the original wheels it gives the truck some caricature. The tyres looked great with the tyre writing. I am looking forward to see it running
Love boxart but yeah Tamiya Legends logo and white! Awesome and keep this on your back shelf! My first RC in 83 the Brat was! Big fan only have a rere now but love it! Nice one Glenn brilliant stuff!😉👍
TAMIYA Legends ...Looking forward to the video when you get to that point. Have an old friend back in NJ I RC-ed with, he had the Grasshopper and the Toyota bruiser. Haven’t talked to him in a bit, but next time I do will see if he still has them and would let them go to a good home. He worked at the hobby store where we bought all of what you now have. Store was on American Choppers tv show a few years back, now out of business unfortunately. Highway Hobby was the name if I recall located in Ramsey, NJ. Be well, stay safe.
Great video Glenn. Can feel your passion. I have just managed to get a mint marui shogun (my first ever hobby grade RC car). Once it arrives I will send you some pics
My std 540 motor in my original Monster Beetle stripped those hex drive shafts within a couple of months. I remember going down to the model shop once I’d saved my pocket money for them and then had to wait for them to come in from japan. Luckily the guy who owned Hobbins Models in Lincoln didn’t make us kids buy the full parts bags and would just sell us what we needed at a lower price.
I’ve got a very nice OG Brat. It looks ‘right’ in box art Red. I do have a NIB Re-Release though, I’m such a Subaru fan I drive a WRX as my real car. So, I’d like one in Subaru Blue with matching Gold rims. But my WRX is metallic White, so I can see how that would look good on the Brat. Wheels would need to look like new to match, maybe cheat with some aftermarket rim parts 😃
Lovely Glen. Paint colour for me should be box art... Seeing that chassis all original is brilliant. Even seeing you working from the old manual with the rust from the staples seeping onto the paper.. Surely it’s got to be box art!!!
TAMIYA Legends oh go on then. It’s about time you had a Tamiya legends scheme!!!!!. Is it Iconic Rc that have their own scheme????. I’m sure it will be great👍👍👍👍👍
Love your content Glenn and thumbs up for the effort you put in for us all. Watch every vid religiously and I’m back to my childhood whilst watching every one. How do you tape RUclips on a video I’ve not worked that one out yet 😄

Great job cleaning that all up - looks ace (I like the original wheels too, personally). So nice to see one of these again (had one as a kid). Your white colour scheme sounds cool. Do it! 👍😀
To get your wheels white again you could try using White Rit Dye. I recently dyed some grey wheels and red differential covers on a crawler to black and they came out amazing. Just make sure they're very clean because the dye won't cover dirt or grease.
White sounds cool. I love this chassis and it’s used on a lot of my favourites. Agreed vintage restoration is great and is my favourite part of the hobby. Look forward to what you do with it.
I have "saved" a few wheel sets with beat up lips like those by simply laying them flat on a sheet of 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper. With the paper wet slowly move the wheel in a circular motion, checking your progress periodically. The object is not to remove the lip but to simply flatten it. You would be amazed at how well the wheel can look after a few seconds!
Great video! I would keep it Box Art.....stock rocks! I think I have those gearbox bearing holders if they are the same as the Monster Beetle? In other news I have an 8 year old that is now saying BOOM with a Yorkshire accent 🤣
I think it’ll be fun to do a Tamiya Legends paint job. 2nd for me, would be a box art body with original decals. It’s in good condition for the age of it.
A trick for reducing yellowing in white plastics is to use Hydrogen Peroxide and leave in the sun for a few hours. (A trick used to restore old vintage Star Wars stormtrooper action figures) There's a few RUclips videos showing how to.
👍looks good! That was strange I wonder why thy did not just make you use the option part with a plastic bushing so you can just put a bearing in it if you wanted?
What motor would you put in this RC car please comment back I am going to running on black top and maybe grass that's it I want this to stay nice I'm going to pain it to same way mine was a full size one and it's gonna be very rarely used but I would like to have a little quicker motor than stock please comment back thank you very much for this video
The rear half shafts were always a problem. The "Frog", "Blackfoot", "Brat" and "Monster Beetle" had these shafts. Back in the day, we used a Thorp ball diff and Thorp dog bones to fix this. I do have a re-release "Monster Beetle' and a re-release "Brat". I also have an all original "Blackfoot" with original half shafts. I do not drive the "Blackfoot" because the half shafts would strip out. Do your "Brat" in red and box art. Maybe do a second body, if you can get one in white. That is what I think might be cool.
Use a heat gun on any tough thread lock. Once hot the screws come out easily. Any white plastic you can soak in a peroxide and water mixture and it usually works great.
You won’t get problems with this gearbox because it has no diff. The problems with this box only affects the cars with diff because the aluminium side plates would expand and release pressure on the bevel gears. I used to run my brat with a kyosho 240s and a homemade 8.4v battery and used to kill everyone in the local car park. When one of my friends tried a similar setup in a frog, his gearbox blew on the 3rd run.😂
i'm thinkin about getting a re re brat, im on the fence about getting an orginal cuz i know i would drive it!!! love these chassis's, i bought a monster beetle a year ago and spent so much time on the body that i try not to drive it, but love it so much that i bought a blackfoot to 'beat' on, didn't paint the body just threw the decals on ,put 19T motor in her and wammo!!! so now i can kinda keep the beetle nice and still be able to drive the same chassis with the blackfoot....so much fun;)
Personally, I love the idea of going white with the Tamiya Legends livery. I think that would look great, and also be a nice personal piece. Just checked my spare parts bin, and I have the white plastic gearbox inserts you need. They're from my rere Monster Beetle, I've upgraded the rear diff to MIP, so I dont need those inserts. They're yours if you want them, my friend. Let me know! 👊
I went through so many of those hex drives on my Blackfoot back in the day the CRP ones lasted a bit longer but so many clean and re greasing of those things trying to run a ridiculous amount of power through them eventually I just bought a Thorp diff problem solved I could have bought two of them with the amount I spent replacing the stripped hex drive parts 🤦♂️ I’d keep the original wheels as cool as mint or NIB unused/built originals are to collectors what fun is it to just put them on a shelf and look at them fine if it’s something rare or super fragile but I also enjoy something like this that was played with and enjoyed by someone it’s just cooler to me every scratch or user modification tells a story and becomes part of the character of the thing which leads me to the body I say go for the channel car white with the stripes in the Tamiya colors I say do the decals in a clear background for the hood with just the script in Red & Blue and incorporate the writing into the custom stripes on the side probably towards the back QTR whatever you decide it’s just adding to the story and the character to add lib a line from a movie “This is my Brat there were many like it but this one is mine” well actually it’s yours 🍺😂👍🏽
Good morning Glen!!! Myself I’m always a box art guy but always try to buy a second body to run and I try to get creative with it depending on the decals. JMHO! . Also I got a question.... just ordered a top force.... besides green what other color do you recommend? Thanks again and never stop with the awesome videos. Thanks
Normally I would go against white, at least plain white. Tends to look like you've just primered it lol but if you get the stickers done it will look amazing.
hi T L... ' i have one new tamiya brat car in the box and buy in 2007 or 2008 at hobby store in clarksville... i picked little tamiya parts to frog car / traxxas car... brat / lancia / frog are same ORV chassic
Hi Glenn, the tight screws try tightening them then loosening them but only!!!! Use small movement's and if you're lucky!! The screws should loosen( old mechanics trick!!! So keep it to your self!!!! Lol!!). If that doesn't work try a soldering iron on the thread's to soften the threadlock. Steve UK.
Proper old school re-build, love it👊👍
Box art Glen, however white would look cool..... Providing you can get hold of tamiya ps-1😉

Very interesting Paul 😊
Did they ever do the real truck with big wheels or was that just a Tamiya thing?
TAMIYA Legends no Glenn, just a Tamiya thing 🤣. They ran with very similar wheels to the Brat. About 12 maybe 13 inch wheels, steel painted white.
looking sharp, good work buddy

I think people are often surprised how well that chassis handles. Especially Frog spec.

Yeah I was blown away with the Frog 🐸 it ran great 🤩👊🏻
Had a Blackfoot with the same steering set up and even beeing intact it had about the same amount of slop. And it had the same gearbox/drive shaft set up and the hexes were rounded when I got it. Tamiya Legends version 1000%!!! That will look MINT... :-)

Excellent feedback Alfred, thanks buddy 😊👊🏻
I used a fine file and fine sand paper to freshen up my original Terra Scorcher wheels. Really happy with them.
Could it be on the re-release?
White would look tip top 👌🏻

What is the function of the resistors ?? What do they do?

It takes the load to give you the low and medium speed on the 3 speed controller 👊🏻
can you get ahold of a lexan body as well? do hard body box art and white on the other
adrian harrison
Yeah I’m not a massive fan of the poly body shell 😬😬😬
same here but it makes a good bashing body and then a hard body for the shelf ..
I have my eye on a re-re at my lhs and it has both bodys in the box
Another great video mate think it will look good in white but up to u mate it’s your car happy rcing and stay safe

I’d keep the original wheels as cool as mint or NIB unused/built originals are to collectors what fun is it to just put them on a shelf and look at them fine if it’s something rare or super fragile but I also enjoy something like this that was played with and enjoyed by someone it’s just cooler to me every scratch or user modification tells a story and becomes part of the character of the thing
which leads me to the body I say go for the channel car white with the stripes in the Tamiya colors I say do the decals in a clear background for the hood with just the script in Red & Blue and incorporate the writing into the custom stripes on the side probably towards the back QTR whatever you decide it’s just adding to the story and the character to add lib a line from a movie “This is my Brat there were many like it but this one is mine” well actually it’s yours 🍺😂👍🏽

I don’t know 🤔 I have the motor so it might e cool to actually use it 🤷🏼♂️. Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Normally I would go against white, at least plain white. Tends to look like you've just primered it lol but if you get the stickers done it will look amazing.

Nice 😎👊🏻
Hi Glenn, the tight screws try tightening them then loosening them but only!!!! Use small movement's and if you're lucky!! The screws should loosen( old mechanics trick!!! So keep it to your self!!!! Lol!!). If that doesn't work try a soldering iron on the thread's to soften the threadlock. Steve UK.
Always wanted one of those ... Ended up with a Hornet, Fox, Clodbuster, Hotshot, loved the 80's... And white with a hood and boot stripe?
I'm with you on the white body, but maybe custom graphics. 🤔
