Bernstein & Holmes torch Jerry Reinsdorf for blaming White Sox fans

  • After White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf recently asked the state for around $1 billion in public financing to build a new ballpark in the South Loop, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes ranted about Reinsdorf's claim that the club can't be profitable at Guaranteed Rate Field. Reinsdorf also cited fan attendance as being a problem even after the 2005 World Series championship run.

As a Sox fan since 1959, I am just speechless. This JO got one new stadium courtesy of taxpayers, and now wants another. Where is the return on investment from the first stadium? A few lousy playoff appearances (which mainly were one-and-dones), one World Series title. That's it. He screwed up the current stadium from the beginning, aiming it in the wrong direction. He is the ONLY owner who's never had a $100 million ballplayer. Go ahead; take your cheap ass to Nashville.

Jerry's been doing his best to try and move up my worst Chicago owners list. Which is tough given how strong the list is here (sad for Chicago lol). The Bears had a decades long lock on first until the Blackhawks dethroned them with their SA scandal. This new round of stadium handouts could determine whose in second for now. I finally turned on Jerry with the LaRussa hiring for all the reasons given here. He's been way too loyal to his management which produced mediocre results while still overriding them when it suits him. He's always ran everything like a mom and pop shop instead of the billion dollar franchises they are. Yet its still the fan's faults for not supporting the team enough. Yeah, sure Jerry.

    1. Carlton Fisk
    2. Albert Belle
There have been trades for some top players, like Freddie Garcia and Jim Thome, but too many times we ended up with Tom Seaver, Ken Griffey Jr, and both Alomar brothers st the very end of their careers.

He's running the same playbook Bud Selig did as owner of the Brewers. He says he can't invest money in the team because the revenue isn't coming in, but what he should know is that if they made an effort to put a good quality team out there, people would show up. You invest money to make money.

There is ZERO chance Reinsdorf moves the team if he doesn't get a new stadium, and for that reason the state/city should negotiate hard and not just give him everything he wants like Thompson (his law school buddy) did last time.
Baseball is not a popular sport anymore and Reinsdorf has a 130 year generational fanbase right where he is, in the nations third largest market, and moving to an area where no one cares about baseball would be insane. Think of how much of a disaster it would have been if he moved the team to Tampa 30 years ago, and now the sport is way less popular.

Reinsdorf won't own the area around the ballpark, he won't even own the ballpark. Although a new ballpark closer to downtown will increase the franchise value which is what he's after. If the Bears build in Arlington Heights they will own the area around the stadium.@@MS-ht9it

I grew up in NC next door to TN. I can 100% vouch that Southerners don't care about baseball. They're crazy about college sports - football and basketball. Let Reinsdorf move to Nashville as I would love to see him lose millions each year. 😂😂 And Tennesseans sure as hell, will not pay their hard earned money to support a lousy baseball team that is nearly dead last in MLB.
There is a good reason that no southern states have a baseball team. Atlanta Braves are an exception because Atlanta is not the South (was before General Sherman burned it down). Everyone in Atlanta is from northeastern states.

He had a rough stretch in the 80’s, Jerry put a winning team on the field for most years between ‘90-‘12. Five first place finishes, eleven second place finishes and six third place finishes plus a WS win. Six year rebuild then produced a first, second and third place finish. Last year fell apart and now all the sudden Jerry doesn’t care. Spending the most money doesn’t necessarily make you the smartest guy. If he was able to put that many winning teams on the field without breaking the bank something is working. There have been times when he was ready to pop for mid season additions if things looked promising for the postseason, but didn’t pan out. Multiple stadium refinishes, winning teams should put butts in seats, but it’s clear that people don’t want to go to Lowrate Field no matter what, should not be that hard to see. I don’t enjoy watching home games with an empty stadium for the first two months of the season and I’m sure the players don’t like that either. Again, 78 or Nashville, the players and the fans deserve better.
