To this very day (and forever after), I truly believe that The Rippingtons will always be perceived as The Most Underrated Band In The History Of Bands. They’re just so tight, and free, and... amazing.
You are exactly right. I just happened to find his first album in 1986 (Moonlighting) and was hooked on this band from that time on. Saw them LIVE on a cold winter night in Birmingham, AL at the Carver theater and I was blown away. Seems like just yesterday.
This was the first song I ever heard by the Rippingtons; I'll never forget it. I was in a record store in St. Louis and this was playing (the studio version). I liked it, so I asked the guy behind the counter what it was, and he said "The Rippingtons" and handed me the CD case. I've been a fan of theirs ever since.
Ditto! I wore my cassette tape out. Good thing CD's weren't far behind. In the car I blast this one out. Folks just smile when they see the grey head. "Go Granny"
Russ Freeman is The MASTER of this GENRE: Smooth HAPPY JAZZ! The additional perk of David Benoit on the Piano and the Late GREAT Carl Anderson on vocals makes this one of The BEST Happy Jazz songs/performance EVER in this Genre!!!
It's the late great Carl Anderson, who was a staple at GRP for backgrounds and studio work. He did an excellent version of "O Holy Night" on one of the GRP Christmas CDs. He was so cool.
Ironically, many people claimed the vocals on this track was that of the late Al Jarreau, however the vocals on this track belonged to the also late but great Mister Carl. Anderson. To anyone who was familiar with this guy. It's not a surprise the power and intensity of power this man's vocals brought to the table. Thanks for sharing.
Saw this entire group including Carl Anderson and Jeff Kashiwa in the 90’s several times. I’ve never been lifted off of my seat listening to them alive. And they were better than shown here. Watching Steve Reid play the background was a show in itself.
The Ripps were the Beatles only in jazz genre.....Started listening to them in 1998 and seen them many times live.....A sad note tho.....RIP Carl Anderson......... Ripps Live in LA was the pinnacle of their long history. Jeff K, Kim S, Tony M and Steve Reed & Mark Portman......with Russ was the best lineup they ever put together!
When I first heard the Rippingtons, I was stationed in Louisiana. A woman that worked in the bx turned me on to them. I had the good fortune to see them live in Pittsburgh. Wonderful..
I know in popular thought this is considered "elevator" or "hold" music, but really Russ Freeman is a badass composer. He just churns out these super thought-out and original songs that stick in your ear a bit!
Todd Roberson you're being so emotional, but I can't agree anymore. It's still better than having performance that's just thinking about "being cool", "my skill is better than anyone else in the band"
First saw the Rippingtons at the Club Bene Supper Club in Sayreville, NJ in 1989. Blew us away. Steve the percussionist sat with my husband and me before the show and we got to know him. What a character!
I had the VHS tape of this live in LA it had a bonus song on there that Carl Anderson did called fantasy hotel what a great great voice he had the song is called once in a lifetime love terrific song R.I.P. CARL ANDERSON
What a way to spend Sunday Morning listen to an array of music------Joyous!!!!!!! Reviewing all the favorites I used to listen to from the '50s on up to today. Rippingtons' are a soothing, happy, ray of sunshine!
Russ Freeman, total jazz genius! Went to many live performances in the Philly area. (The Keswick in Glenside, PA). The first time I heard them live was bone chilling! Amazing how you expect the live performance to be just "ok". Not here, this is real! Not fake, REAL MUSICIANS! Thank You Russ Freeman for providing many years of listening enjoyment!
I think this music is wonderful,I love the rippingtons, specially when steve bailey was the bass player, thanks for share this great song, enjoy your life
Saw the Ripps several times in the early 90s. They played a free concert in Baltimore around the time of Curves Ahead. Loved them ever since despite being more of a trad jazz guy.
I really love this music. This live version is fantastic, and the vocals. We can see the happyness and joy. Jeff so happy and electric. We can feel the pleasure and satisfaction from the guys of the band, playing with heart. This song makes me remember my daughter, and everytime i'm listening, i cry. Not sadness, but happy. Hugs from Santos (Brazil)
I've always liked this group, and I would loove to hear some new stuff from them! None of the watered down stuff of recent years, more of the original and innovative stuff that made them the tops in the 80s and 90s! R.I.P. Carl Anderson!

One of their very great hits in my opinion. I wish they had recorded another video with the "hep" blue cat. The best smooth jazz band ever. 😎
+stony2494 Agreed!
I agree!, saw them many times from 1988 till present day, I have just about all their CD's. Freeman and Kashiwa rule.

This song used to play on our family restaurant’s radio station all the time. It has so much vibrancy, character, intrigue, and depth!
Me too. I first heard it in 1988. Just love it. Never get fed up hearing it. Lifts me right up xx

A really rare talent, fitting in perfectly with the Rippingtons.

This song bring extraordinary memories being stationed overseas.
No Doubt. Every song these guys play is perfect. Don't need to add or subtract anything. My all time favorite group. No one tops it.

Tourist in Paradise is my FAVORITE song by the Rippingtons...love it!!!
I know in popular thought this is considered "elevator" or "hold" music, but really Russ Freeman is a badass composer. He just churns out these super thought-out and original songs that stick in your ear a bit!
The coolest thing about this is how much fun the musicians are having. They love being there ... I wish I could have been there.
Todd Roberson you're being so emotional, but I can't agree anymore. It's still better than having performance that's just thinking about "being cool", "my skill is better than anyone else in the band"
+Ahmad Ridwan Fauzi You're a fucking idiot. Everyone knows you have no skills.
Gumball LastRally Appreciate for your commentary. Thanks. Should I mad at you now?

Fell in love with their music the first time I heard it. What an AWESOME band!!!!
I've loved this tune for so long,it always reminds me of the intro to 'Knots Landing" for some reason also was my favorite late night soaps.
Watched them perform at the 1996 Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. Awesome show! This looks like the same lineup they had in 96 with Jeff Kashiwa on sax.
The atmosphere is electric with the good vibes and joy eking out of every follicle of hair in their mullets
High energy band can't believe I passed them up after all these years. Wow

Rock has Stairway to Heaven as its anthem. Dare I say that Jazz has an anthem in Tourist in Paradise?
+Temp You daren't say that. This is not representative of all Jazz.

Russ Freeman is my hero. Tourist in the paradise is my favourite song!
"Tourist in Paradise" is the early Rippingtons signature song. Great live version with great musicians!
I will always think of this as “ the bridge song”, going over the bridges from Bonita over Little & Big Hickory onto FMB’s south end… the last few miles to paradise. Ian nearly took it away. Rippingtons is the soundtrack to our time there.
Have seen them a few times, luckily at smaller venues, where they made themselves available after the shows to sign autographs and just say hi. Great music & great guys too!! Thanks for all of the fantastic music over the years!!
One of the tightest line-up I've seen from the Rippingtons, to date.
First song I ever heard the Rippingtons play and I've just about worn out my CD. This is an great video but the energy they bring to a live performance is incredible. They are all consumate musicians who never go just through the motions. They obviously love their music and love playing together.
