It's 1978 and I'm a 16 year old white kid who loves jazz and especially Grover Washington Jr. I played the tenor saxophone so it wasn't that hard to fall in love with his playing. He really was one of the best I scored a second row, aisle seat at a show at Cincinnati Music Hall. It has to be one of the greatest nights of my life. I luckily was able to see him a couple more times. Great memories.
Color has nothing to do with it kiddo. You obviously have a good ear and incredible taste for good jazz. Coming from a soul sistah who loves Grover and good music period!!! 😊
Grover Washington Jr. and his band are missed. I wonder what music they would have created if Grover would not have been called home so soon. RIP to the great Grover Washington Jr. Pieces Of A Dream: My Favorite Number Is Foe Five Foe
There was nothing like seeing G.W. and R. Lee perform with Pieces back in the early eighties.....Got lucky TWICE! Second time was at a small club venue in Denver.......OMG!
So grateful I got to see him play on my birthday in 1992 at the Rheem Theatre in Moraga, CA and again at The Playboy Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles. Thank you for the sounds Grover, R.I.P., Much Love ❤️
Lovely Tokyo Blaze more Paths for Young Grover's to Blossom and Shine Brighter than ever for the Entire World to Recognize Respect and Request The Talents and Gifts The American African People offer So Welcomed in my Library of Greats
I worked for a record wholesaler in Phila, the guy who had the spot before me was Grover Washington. He would pop in from time to time. One of the sweetest, humble positive amazing people I'd ever seen.
yes indeed he was I remember when I worked at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philly back the early 80's we spotted him & his wife having dinner in one of the hotel restaurants one night....one of my co-workers just happened to be playing Grover's "Reed Seed" 8 Track back in the kitchen so we asked the waiter could he ask Grover to autograph the 8 Track for us & of course he did I also got my picture taken with him when he popped up one night to sit in with his protégés Pieces Of A Dream for a few sets he was always so gracious & humble
I snagged a front-row center single seat at the last minute for one of his rare appearances here in Santa Barbara. It still stands as one of the very best concert performances I have ever attended.
By far some of the greatest Jazz of all times. Such an excellent Artist gone much too soon, but Grover, Washington, Junior leaves music to be cherished for centuries to come. May he continue to rest in power, now, one of our ancestors, and worthy to be acknowledged as such. For his family, and all his friends and all of his band members may we all keep great and fine memoriesof Mr. Washington, Junior, and our heart and mind even for those of us who only knew his music and didn’t know him as a person personally. Much love, much respect. Jeffrey Lewis, Detroit.
My father loved Grover, AND Pieces of a Dream! I heard so many of these classics growing up. I know he's still enjoying him some Grover up in heaven. Love you dad!
GW jr was friends with me father in law, along with Dexter(who you can tell he's close with in this video ), Billy Paul and the guy who wrote "Sade". Great group of men 😥
My favorite saxophonist. I can recall hearing him for first time in Lake Charles, LA years ago. Miss him but still listen to him. A great performer. RIP Grover.
I mentioned these guys because not only were they great musicians, I just think it's weird how they all played saxophone and all died pretty damned young.
Caught him in Shreveport LA with his band Locksmith We gave him a STANDING O after each jam he replied by saying SHREVEPORT HUH WOW he was the GREATEST
The chord changes in this cut (Winelight) are mesmerizing. It was the dream of this 1980s bass player to learn them by heart, and make his own signature statement every time this one was called. Nearly forty years later, and I still get chills whenever I hear or play it. Thank you Grover, my brother. For all the music, all the inspiration, all the memories, (especially meeting you between sets at the Blue Note, NYC back in '88) your musical legacy has transcended into immortality. 👑🎷
First heard Mr Magic in 1977 when I was stationed in Japan in the Marines. Black Frost, Knucklehead, Reed Seed, Loren’s Dance on & on. Had all his albums. Him & Jr Walker some of the BEST on the Sax.
Mesmerizing, Masterful, Pieces of a dream all of Grover's compositions are, never to be loved by adoring fan base he amast during his career shear genius R.I.P. my Brother.
Todo evoluciona igual todo se acaba y este genio no ha sido una excepción , pero su legado es inolvidable y siempre estará ahí en lo más alto . Maravilloso Groover.
incredible! the band had some kind of groove thumpin that nite, and Grover climbed right on top of it. amazing chemistry. i saw Grover and Aretha more than any two artists in my life. i feel them both every day. they still here y'all.
Yes. Pieces of A Dream! They were all babies then. I loved them then and still love them to this day! Even though Cedric is no longer one of the original members... I still love him too. Of course the one and only Mr. Grover Washington Jr. Thank you all for your wonderful gifts of music!

This time was such a pleasure, with Grover, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny, Donald Fagen and others kicking so much sweetness and light.
There was nothing like seeing G.W. and R. Lee perform with Pieces back in the early eighties.....Got lucky TWICE! Second time was at a small club venue in Denver.......OMG!
