Imagine being one of those Guardsmen though. You have been raised hearing about the stories of Space Marines. You likely believe them to be legend, as no one you know has ever seen one. Your planet is invaded, and you go off to fight. You are losing, and likely about to die. Then, all of a sudden, the beings you heard about in stories show up and save you. You thought them legend, and now they are here to bring down the Emperor’s judgement. To say that you would be in awe is an understatement. I don’t think anyone could fully comprehend how they would feel in that situation

Considering that humanity needs to basically shed all human aspects of themselves to create these monsters to even stand a chance. 9ft tall 2300 lbs death machines that can run at 65kmh and even then we are on the backfoot in a loosing battle against the dark.
Most of the fighting I think is done by the Imperial Guard, Space Marines are only sent to the worst battlefields. Space Marines are actually super rare
@@JelgioValerio and how well is that going? With an average of 11 or so worlds lost daily with a 3 or so gain ratio. My point still stands. From numbers in the 3.2 to 2.6 million the marine post heresy dropped to little under 1 million total in service. And during that time when we relied on the guard the most, we also lost the most progress the Imperium has ever lost aside from outright civil war. It's only recently when the astarties numbers have been boosted up to around 2 million that we've seen any Semblance of the great crusade returned.
Kind of sad to see how 18 legions of 100000 space marines turned into chapters of 1000 marines because of the sheer loss and paranoia the horus heresy caused. The Imperium was on the brink of victory and Erebus ruined it all
