It is not so surprising. There is a lot of this insanely good musicians in metal pulling some stuff at this level of musicianship nowadays and for quite a few decades now. A lot of the technical death metal musicians early on adapted a lot of stuff from jazz and have made it into the ridiculously complex music it is today. That's not the only genre, even some of the more mainstream newer metal bands have some fine musical skills.

Except the number is NOT a solo, it's a full blown arrangement for jazz orchestra silly. The different soloists perform their own solos of course at the times predetermined. #eyeroll 😎
This is generally how a Snarky Puppy concert goes down. It's insane talent. The solos played by Chris on saxophone and Cory on keys were improvised on the spot. In concert the musicians don't know who is soloing until a few bars before they play when Michael League gives them the nod. Keeps it fresh and exciting from show to show. Catch them live, it will change you.
What a feeling it must be to have a song come to life the way this one did. When Michael League wrote this song, I'm sure that what resulted from this performance far exceeded what he was hearing in his head when he imagined it complete. That is likely a once in a lifetime combination or writing, arranging, producing and spontaneous performance of generationally great musicianship. Michael League is in a very small group of the very best producers ever.
You said it man! Still can't watch this without total amazement .. The groove in the beginning, so funky, so much great improvisation, that ending .. humbling ....

Finally!! Snarky Puppy is incredible man, definitely a band that musicians tend to flock to. Just insane musical ability and really good composing. The bass player, Michael League, is the band leader and composer for many if not most of SP's music. The final product is always a crazy collaborative effort from all these super talented musicians, but League plays a big part in how well-written many of these songs are. Fun fact, the drummer Larnell Lewis was brought in at the very last minute to fill in for SP's usual drummer, Robert "Sput" Searight (though he's sat in with SP a few times on tours). He basically learned all of the songs in the span of a few hours, then performed them live all week. "After a last moment call, Larnell arrived the next day at Amsterdam airport at 7:00 am. Heading straight for the studio to set up the drums, having an intense and sped up rehearsal session in the afternoon, and locking the nine tracks to be recorded for the dvd that very same evening. An enormous achievement considering the recordings covered four days: from Monday until Thursday with two shows a night, all being recorded for the upcoming Snarky Puppy dvd."
This is probably their peak performance. But also check out the one they do with Jacob Collier. It's pretty freaking epic as well. There are moments in that one where they are all looking at each other like, are we really doing this? The drummer here, BTW, isn't their regular. He came as a last minute replacement and did this on fairly short notice. He's a complete beast.

Snarky Puppy are a jazz ensemble led by bass player Mike League with (because it's jazz) a constantly evolving roster of supporting musicians. The keyboard soloist is Cory Henry. We Like It Here is an epic recording. As I recall it contains 8 tracks recorded live over 4 days. What you are watching is the recording session for this track.
That was Cory Henry on the keys. The other keyboardist was Shaun Martin. If you want to see what he can do check out "thing of gold" by snarky puppy, you won't be disappointed!
So glad you did this song! When Cory started his solo and you were smiling, I thought, “J has no idea what’s coming. He has no concept of how hard he’s about to get hit! He’s about to have the stankiest of all stank faces.” Your reaction did not disappoint. lol
There is definitely more! "Thing of Gold", "Sleeper", "Outlier", much more! Then they get with Metropol Orchest adding way more instruments and play in a different direction with songs like "The Kite" and "The Curtain". They also play with a bunch of guest singers like Layla Hathaway. Snarky Puppy is a rabbit hole, enjoy the fall!
Jamel: This is what heaven must be like for music.
Me: Oh, man, wait til he hears the keyboard solo...
Exactly what I said. You just knew he was going to lose his mind.

The Curtain
Absolutely love this band. Get into more!
Heaven Yes! So great to see your reaction....
If you want to see what he can do check out "thing of gold" by snarky puppy, you won't be disappointed!
your reaction videos make me love songs, like this one, that i've loved for decades even more
So glad you did this song! When Cory started his solo and you were smiling, I thought, “J has no idea what’s coming. He has no concept of how hard he’s about to get hit! He’s about to have the stankiest of all stank faces.” Your reaction did not disappoint. lol
"This is what heaven must look like... for music..."
I couldnt have said it better! This is Gold! Snarky puppy are straight fire!
Snarky Puppy is a rabbit hole, enjoy the fall!
more snarky puppy! this band is incredible.
best reaction of the past 2 and a half years!!! thanks for the joy Jamel !!
the brother playing the bad ass keyboard solo is Cory Henry and the drummer is Larnelle Lewis
