I was there for the recording of this. My kids were students at the Music Lab. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. I'm happy to see that other folks are picking up on the Pups.
wow. being in thst room would be an amazing opportunity. I would do anything to be there for one of these. I saw them live once, but most of the audience seemed to be there to party and not listen (which is ok i guess), but folks were talking over some of the most standout musical moments. I think a lot of their fans go for the funk, but aren't trained to understand the jazz. glad they have all the fans they've got though, I ain't haitin'. I would just prefer to hear them in that kind of intimate setting so I can hear everything that's going on.
YES! Lalah Hathaway is an absolute legend! She's known for her ability to sing overtones. She has such insane control over it too! They won a Grammy for this performance, and I feel bad for the other nominees because they didn't stand a chance.
In case people don’t quite understand why the band was freaking out and the drummer got up out of his seat at the end. Lalah has the ability to do overtone singing which means she can sing more than one note at a time. She was singing THREE..... THREE notes at once and they were all in the same key as the song. She is incredibly skilled beyond comprehension.
At the 18th of september 2021 I will see & hear miss Hathaway with the incredible Metropole Orchestra. Snarky Puppy is great, but our Dutch proud Metropole Orchestra will lift her to another level.
She has her daddy's beautiful vocal tone and sense of timing (the great Donny Hathaway!) and so much more. For someone who lost that parent to suicide so young - he was 32 I think, and she had to be under 10 years old - she has done far more than merely survive... She has built a beautiful life and calling for herself and we are blessed to simply bask in her glory.
Lalah Hathaway is one the greatest female voices to grace the earth. Her silky soul piercing voice make her vocally UNTOUCHABLE! ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!
I'm so happy that you reacted to this ❤️ Lala Hathaway is phenomenal. I'm not sure if you know this but Ms Hathaway is the daughter of the great Donnie Hathaway. The way Lala can sing overtones is something that is unique and rare in most singers. That was what made the drummer jump out of his seat and everyone else so excited. I think that maybe you didn't hear it or that you weren't sure of what you had just heard. Great reaction ❤️
Almost broke up with my girlfriend because she doesn't like this song, could be because I listen to it almost daily for the past year but still, damn. This woman is the best to ever do polyphonic harmony.
Daughter of the late great Donnie Hathaway! In addition to her incredible multi-phonic improv, it’s a good idea to hear her original ‘tamed’ version of this song to appreciate the deconstruction & remix that Snarky Puppy did on the song harmonically & arrangement.
A BIG respect on GREAT Donny Hathaway’s daughter’s name! She is one of the best singers in the world.. she won a Grammy for this performance and basically wins a Grammy every year, it seems! What a vocalist and a great great band behind her (to me, the best band in the world now, and Cory Henry....c'mon...)!
@@jamelakajamal for another completely different (but beautiful) sound of using the voice as an instrument without particular words, check out the Cocteau Twins. Song suggestions - "Carolyn's Fingers", "Cherry Coloured Funk", "Those Eyes, That Mouth", "Heaven or Las Vegas", "Pandora (for Cindy)", "Aloysius", etc. etc.
Holy Crap! Thank you for introducing me to something else I never would have heard without you bro! Btw I loved your reaction to her and the band as I always love your reactions!
My reaction to your reaction videos...... LOVE THEM. Your passion for the music, your knowledge, your emotional involvement with what's going on. You make me laugh too.
I loved your reactions, but when she made that ‘double note’ sound towards the end, it literally blew the band members away. I thought the drummer was going to fall OUT!
When you start getting into jazz you are swimming toward the deep end of the ocean. Using the voice to mimic an instrument is a standard jazz thing called scat. I love funk and jazz, and really like funky jazz and jazzy funk. Thank you for playing these, I stumbled onto Cory Henry (the keyboard player) a couple of days ago because I'm a fan of JAM IN THE VAN on youtube. Snarky Puppy was in parenthesis after Cory Henry's name. I just looked at the wiki article on Snarky Puppy before watching them for the first time with two of your videos. It's hilarious that the guy who put Snarky Puppy together said he wasn't a good enough player to get into any of the music ensembles when he was a college at North Texas, so he had to start his own music group of 10 players in order to be able to play himself. There have been 40 different players in Snarky Puppy over the years, including a core of 6 who have been there from the start. Many of them went to college at North Texas. Now I'm going to listen to a lot more of Snarky Puppy. Thanks for introducing me to this group!
Are you new to Snarky Puppy? I'd also love to point your way to a few other fun bands in the Funky Jazzy different realm, Lettuce, Ghost-note, and Vulfpeck for starters
@@alexmurillo7434 yes, I just heard Snarky Puppy for the first time yesterday, thanks to Jamel, though I had seen Cory Henry on JAM IN THE VAN a few days earlier and had looked up Snarky Puppy on wiki before I even heard them. I am so happy you reacted to this fabulous video. Wow, every time I hear it's brand new. Ms. Hathaway is a rare treasure o be certain and Snarky Puppy is an exquisite band for her to launch into her vocal stratosphere. I truly love this track. Technically Donny Hathaway was sitting down on a piano vocally slaying songs live. To me, there is no competition, especially between a father and daughter, without Donny there's no Lala. Now that I think about it, Donny was only alive for 33 years, yet his voice was just slightly more developed than Lala's was in her younger years. Sadly we'll never see those two on a stage 😔
I’m watching this AGAIN and your reaction is delightful! If you see this comment, I’d like to recommend Jill Scott singing “ Golden”. She’s another golden singing treasure.
